HOW HIGH A CEILING

HOW HIGH A CEILING
Asked by: BILL
Our bathroom ceiling is 8' high and this unit works fine. The fan does seem a bit louder than 3.5 sones which is slightly disappointing. It helps to install 4.75" diameter flood lights to restrict the sound (bulbs are not included with this unit), but it's hard to find 4.75" floods that won't blind you in a bathroom space. We went with twin GE 45W LED PAR38 bulbs (Model# LED15P38COLOR4HT). The bulb face is flush with the trim of unit and at 550 lumens each (about 45w ea. equivalent) they're plenty bright.

The Specs say 3.5 sones.

A couple of the reviews said the fan was quiet and I think one said the fan was loud. The display at Home Depot said 4.0 sones is LOUD and 2.0 sones is fairly quiet. Is it loud or quiet? 3.5 sones seems pretty loud...(?)
Asked by: Leroy
As someone said, "Loud is subjective." I find the fan significantly noisier than other bath fans I have installed, and am disappointed in that. By the way, in my view that is the only drawback to this unit--it is well engineered, easy to install, and well thought through.

The electrical connections box is tiny, pushing all wires into it and closing it properly was a the only difficult part. It works well. Makes just a little sound, which helps me know if my son had put it on while taking bath or not. Bathroom (5' x 8' 8") becomes dry within 5 minutes after bath.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacing bath exhaust fan more difficult than anticipated This combo unit exhaust fan/ light/ heater-bulb is the closest match available for my 15 year old unit. It can be wired several ways, and I did not have to change wall switches. The metal case is more tightly formed, less energy loss from air leakage. Works fine, looks ok. However, there is now an extra safety feature to deal with: if there is too much heat buildup inside the case, then the exhaust fan will turn on automatically - surprise! The wiring diagram was poor, had to get an electrician and he missed the new feature - had to come back and redo. Also, the ceiling opening dimensions have changed - had to do some serious cutting and patching, and the new plastic cover is also a different size and may not hide some wallboard changes if not planned ahead. The fan outlet has been moved, so had to change the ducting setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet, Plenty of features and ways to wire it to get what you want. Shipping done as stated. I replaced a 35 year-old fan/light/lamp heater, so this was the model for the job. It's so quiet I forget to turn it off. Great ventilation. Haven't needed the heat lamps yet, but a heat lamp is a heat lamp my friends. The plastic face isn't near as impressive as the satin tin/steel one in my other old fan in my other bathroom. If I had the original satin tin/steel one, I'd substitute it for the white plastic face. Bottom Line: Great replacement to get fan, heat lamps, lights, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from components of the new fan work fine in the old housing Ordered to replace 1982 Nutone fan and double heater light that had finally failed. The new ones have electrical connections and exhaust fan oriented differently, couldn't tell from on line photos. Took the guts out of the new one, put in old housing, reinstalled. Working fine, hope I get a quarter century out of this one, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, improvement over older model, install with foil tape for best results I bought two of these to replace two older vent-lights installed in 1990. This unit is different, slightly wider and shorter than the older Nutone unit, with the vent pointed the opposite direction, but higher quality and should age better. The old model had painted metal surfaces inside the box that rusted; the new model is all metal. Also, this new model has a separate wiring box with more room than the older model. Note: I saw on This Old House the recommendation to use foil tape (also sold at Home Depot). It is excellent for use on units such as this, basically a roll of sticky metal that can be applied everywhere to seal duct work and every opening on this box to keep out dust, insulation, or insects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent fan for the money Installed easy enough. Fan pushes air affectively for our bathroom measuring about 6' x 5'. Only issue I had (and this was based on the location of the fan I replaced not the new unit) was that this unit is meant to be installed in the middle of the joist/truss/rafter bay. My old unit was attached to the one truss. Once I attached some blocking the issue was resolved. Just beware if your buying this for replacement.
