Will this work with 11/64” tape?

Answer

I have only used this banjo with standard-thickness paper drywall tape. However, it appears that this banjo can accommodate thicker tape. The size of the opening can be adjusted, so it would seem that the use of thicker tape is possible, although I do not have, nor am i familiar with, 11/64 tape, so I cannot actually test its use with this banjo..

While it will take some time to get used to using a banjo type drywall taper, it really is a time saver, as well as producing a more uniform result. This provides a consistent 1/8 inch of mud behind the tape, which is much more difficult to do with a trowel alone unless you are doing only a very small patch. There isn’t much as far as instructions included, but there is a wealth of information available online. Eventually, you will develop your own taste for mud consistency, pressure, thickness and so on, as well as the additional weight of using this tool. It is essential that you keep the banjo clean, which I found can only really be done properly with a hose and spray nozzle. A light spray with fine oil after it dries will also keep it operating better and make cleanup easier. I found a couple of minor problems that needed attention. One was that one of plates where the tape exits was improperly adjusted at an angle, allowing an uneven thickness of mud. This was easy to correct since it is made to allow adjustment. The other problem was that the internal gasket between the mud section and the tape section comes off easily when the banjo is open or being washed. I will secure it with a few dabs of silicone calk then next time I am using a tube. An easy fix, but something that should have been done at the factory. Loosing the gasket could prove to be frustrating, with mud leaking into places where it isn’t wanted. While drywall taping is my least favorite of all construction activities, this is an investment that will pay back in time savings, and make the task more bearable.

The ANVIL Quick Load Aluminum Drywall Taper Banjo with Wooden Handle proved to be an easy to use tool, even for this first-time user of a drywall banjo. The use of this tool provided very significant time economies when compared to my traditional method of measuring drywall tape, cutting the tape to the desired length, applying joint compound to the drywall surface to be taped, applying the measured, cut tape to the surface having the applied joint compound, and finally using a 6 inch drywall knife to affix the tape. Far,far quicker and cleaner with the ANVIL drywall banjo. The right amount of tape with the the right amount of joint compound, and the tape is easily cut with the banjo’s attached cutting blade. Also, the amount of joint compound or mud can be varied to suit easily via a set screw adjustment. I will clearly be using this tool for large projects, or for projects for which at least several lengths of tape must be applied.

I have never used one of these banjo tapers before as I always thought that they would be hard to use. Well, it took awhile for me to dial in the mud consistency and the mud gate setting but after that, the only thing holding me back was that I couldn't move my stage platform fast enough. Using this tool really does reduce the amount of mud used and makes tape handling easy. The pictures are from my first tries and I think they came out pretty good. I still need more practice using the tool on ceilings though. Cleaning it up is a lot of extra steps over using a hawk and knife. It is hard to scoop out any unused mud from the banjo box and then I needed to hose it out good to clean it. I found the instructions on the box were a little spare as it could have done a better job of showing the tape path which is barely visible in the illustration. When the tool is full of mud, I find it to be heavy compared to using a hawk so there is a trade-off to get faster speed.

This tool is a real time and work saver! I’m not great at making drywall repairs but the Anvil Quick Load Drywall Taper Banjo provides a way that I can apply a uniform amount of drywall compound under the tape and apply the tape at the same time. It’s made of lightweight aluminum and has a comfortable, hardwood handle. There’s a thumb screw that controls how much compound is applied to the tape. Once you dial it in, you’re set to go! The compartments that hold the drywall tape and drywall compound has a latched cover, so you don’t have to worry about the tape falling out or spilling any of the compound. There’s a side handle that’s adjustable to provide a means of control and a nice thumb rest and a blade to cut off the tape when you’re ready. The banjo can hold a 500 ft. roll of drywall tape and enough drywall compound to tape 40 feet per load. Since I don’t have that much repair work to do on a particular day, one load will handle enough compound and tape to allow me to leave the bucket of compound in the garage and not to have to haul it around. That’s another big plus for this tool in my opinion.
