Questions regarding the AKDY 5.3 ft. Acrylic Reversible Drain Oval Slipper flat bottom Freestanding Bathtub 1. Is the tub construction single or double walled acrylic? 2. If double walled is it or can it be foam insulated to better hold the water at temperature? 3. If it can be ordered with foam insulation what is the additional price?
Asked by: Grady
I’m not sure if it can have insulation added or not, but I will say that it holds its heat very well without any additional adjustments.

Does this have a "hollow" bottom to run plumbing lines?
Asked by: Karen
Yes, it has the drain line already attached and it’s a flexible, extendable pipe too. I simply cut a hole in my floor in the appropriate location, extended the pipe, and pushed it through. Then I eased the tub into position. The pipe came with a ring clamp to attach to the existing drain pipe under my floor. This was the easiest part of my whole bathroom remodel. I’m very happy with it.

Can you use a Roman deck mount style faucet on the stub?

Asked by: Christine
There would not be anywhere on the tub to mount it. In my opinion the only two styles would be a floor mount, or one coming out of the wall.

I started answering a bunch of questions and decided to try to address some of them in this review. Installation was the easiest part of my remodel. Contrary to others here, my tub was shipped without any flaws. It fit through a 30" wide doorway into the bathroom and it contained the right parts to connect to my existing drain. It was light enough for two people to easily move it upstairs and into position. . Pros: All parts were there, easy installation, looks nice. The flexible drain is already attached and it accordions out so the drain can be anywhere. It came with fine sandpaper to fix scratches. Cons: The tub is high sided and my short wife has to get in on the lowest side. Also, it does drain more slowly than a conventional tub.as there is no overflow. Some people like the side faucets but they are pricey. Look into that before you buy this tub. My wife preferred that I raised to spigot and handles on the wall from the old tub so I got off cheaply. The installation manual was lacking to me. It mentioned mounting the thing on a pedestal or something. I have it directly on the floor and I cannot see the feet. This may be owing to the thick flooring I bought that allows it to "sink in" just a bit. Overall, I really like this thing. I was going to give it 4 stars, but realized it's not the fault of this tub that expensive side/floor mounted faucets are required. Also, the description did state there's no overflow so obviously it's not going to drain as fast as a conventional tub. Hope this helps.

This tub was assembled by people who do not know what they are doing. The flat metal drain flange is a poor fit for the conical drain hole in the tub; and rather than plumber’s putty they sealed drain to hole with silicon caulk. Instead of a flat around the bottom of the drain hole they left a ragged, sharp, conical edge; instead of a heavy neoprene washer trapped between that (nonexistent) flat and the nut, they left the nut a little loose and ran a bead of silicon between nut and tub. Silicon does not stick to acrylic very well, and it flexes. The first little bump against the drain assembly compressed that bottom bead of silicon, popping the silicon between drain and tub loose, and of course it leaked the first time I tried to use it. I had to lift tub back out, lay it on its side on blankets, and take everything apart. There was barely room between the frame members to push my orbital sander straight in, but I was able to sand a small flat—it should be much wider, but the too-conical shape of the drain hole didn’t allow for that—around the bottom of the drain hole. Risky; if I had not kept it parallel I’d have ruined the tub. I had to drive across town to buy a neoprene washer and some plumber’s putty, sealed drain to tub with putty and cranked the nut down hard against the neoprene washer, the way it should have been done in the first place. Tub weighs only 80 pounds, and will slide on the tile floor, rotating around its drain (plastic hose that came with it was useless, and wouldn’t fit under the frame). It has to be caulked to the floor—which would be easier if the feet, screwed all the way in, didn’t hold the tub ¾ inch off the floor. Akdy said to caulk tub to floor with silicon. Same problem; silicon barely adheres to acrylic. I used a polyether caulk instead. You have to modify this tub: you are taking a risk if you install it as assembled. It will probably leak; if it doesn’t leak when new, it may later. It’s a pain, and you run the risk of damaging/destroying the tub, sanding that necessary flat spot. It’s not a job for most do-it-yourselfers, and it no doubt invalidates the warranty. Don’t buy Akdy tubs until they learn how to assemble them. And BTW: it says above that the tub is insulated? It is not, there is just an air space between inner and outer layers. I stuffed fiberglass up around it—could only get it about half-way up--and trapped R-11 against the bottom. It holds the heat longer than my old cast-iron tub, but it still cools down in 40 minutes or so.

The base if the tub sits on a small box steel frame that is attached with very thin strips of fiberglass. There are adjustable feet on each corner which is designed to support the bottom of the tub which is elevated. The feet on the drain end of the tub stick out base the external base perimeter 3/8" when fully screwed in, so there is a large air gap around the base. On the other end, one of the feet does not sit flat because the frame was not square when they welded it. Additionally one foot was missing altogether because of the way they pack the tub, the feet wore holes through the shipping product. We ordered a replacement tub, and we had to pay for the replacement in advance, and wait for a refund of the initial order. Even though we picked the tub up at the store, we were told we couldn't just take it back there, so they placed a UPS pickup request on our behalf. The UPS driver arrived several days later and was shocked as he stated they do not ship packages this large. So we had to call HD back again, and then they arranged for a freight company to pick it up which they finally did several days later. Today I went and picked up the replacement tub, only to discover this tub has the exact same issues. I've been on hold for 15 minutes and still haven't been help. Utterly ridiculous process and the manufacturers quality control is obviously terrible. Sadly I've already plumbed the drain and free standing faucet to match this tub, so if I go with a different product, which I likely will, I'll likely have to pull up the sub floor and redo all that mess. Very frustrating. Additionally, there is no foam insulation between the inner and outer walls so I can't imagine the water will retain its heat for a nice long soak. Its sad to see such poor quality and lack or pride in customer service.

I was pleasantly surprised by how strong and sturdy the bottom is, even when a larger person stands in it. (There was no place available to check it out before ordering. I was really nervous that it would arrive and the bottom would feel cheap/flimsy but it's so pretty, I ordered it anyway when it came on a flash sale for 25% off!) So glad I did! It is luxuriously deep. Just one look in its direction and you feel invited in. But there is one drawback. There is NO OVERFLOW. Weird - huh? If you like to run the water and leave the room - do NOT buy this tub. If you don't do that ----- you will fall in love.
