I used these with success without vacuuming first. Personally I would be concerned about streaking the soot beforehand. I would recommend using as directed.

The sponges are intended to absorb dirt/soot using it dry. It should work for acoustic tile. Have you tried to vacuum excess off first? Just an idea.

A lot more than I thought. They still work long after they look dirty. I cleaned a large living room walls and ceiling with mild to moderate soot damage and I had more than enough in the case of 12 I purchased.

I have read that you can wash them with dish soapy water. They can take days to dry. Never use them if they are damp! I tried to wash one, but I felt it was much less effective, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Wow. I had my doubts, but this dry rubber sponge simply wiped soot off of ceilings and walls. I used two sponges; one for the first wipe to get the worst of it, then wiped it once more with a cleaner sponge. Does a great job on residue from candles and incense left behind by groovy tenants.

The Sponge only smeared the soot after removing the powder top layer. NO matter how many times I turned the sponge it would not clean the soot from the flat painted areas, the semi gloss areas or the stained wood.
