The fan will be on your existing wall switch just like any other fan. The remote is needed if your wall switch has no speed control knob. The remote also controls the blade direction if you want to switch that. I usually never use the remote unless I want adjust the speed. The fan moves a lot of air and I find that a slower speed is best.
No, but you can add one. Also, the remote has a sleeve that it fits into that has holes that enable you to mount it to the wall. The remote is nice because it enables you to not only turn the unit on/off and adjust the speed, but also reverse the blade direction without getting out the step ladder.
