A: Hi James, thanks for reaching out! We apologize for the confusion. The reason we don't recommend using lava rock in wood burning fire pits is because you'll be scooping out the rocks when you're removing the soot. We also have not tested this product in wood burning fire pits so we will not recommend anything that we have not tested. While other reviews may have said it should be fine, its best to follow your local codes on what media is suitable for your fire feature. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you! -AFG Customer Service
