Questions & Answers

Do I need drywall?

It says "Mounts directly to studs". But do I need to put drywall up first? I know my question seems silly, but as an amateur DIYer, I need extreme clarity before beginning. Thanks.
Asked by: Matt
No. The reason you don't need drywall is that the surround material is sturdy enough that it doesn't need support between the studs to maintain reasonable rigidity. Also if you are removing an existing tub the distance between the studs on front and back walls would be approximately the standard 60" distance. If you add drywall the distance would be closer to 58.5" so the 60" wide surround back wall would not fit properly.

My back wall is 59 1/2. Can I use this surround

Asked by: Sandy
this surround is 'direct stud' install; if your finished wall is 59.5 the stud wall will be another inch or so and it won't have any problem fitting you'll need to shim.

Can I add this to existing tub that's in already

Asked by: Josh
This gets installed AFTER the tub even when you have them both at the same time. If you had finished walls around the tub they would have to be removed, this surround attaches directly to the studs. If not a specifically mentioned matching model, you would want to make sure the corner radii are compatible

Customer Reviews

Ovation 30 in. x 60 in. x 58 in. 3-piece Direct-to-Stud Tub Surround in Arctic White is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thin surround Since this was a direct to stud application I expected it to be thicker and stronger. After installation it looked very nice. Problem was that it was flimsy between the studs. I had to reinforce between the studs from behind with adhesive and horizontal 2x4s. Once properly supported from behind it was fine.

Installed one for my nephew and here is a tip for anyone thinking about purchasing this unit. When the surround is a bit flimsy use 1/4 " hardi tile board on the studs from just below the tub lip to the ceiling. Then generously glue the surround to it with tub surround adhesive, solid as a rock ! A little more work and expense but the unit is reasonably priced to allow it.

A corner cracked on the long wall when it got away from me during installation and I grabbed the corner to stop the fall. I used it with American Standard's Solar porcelain-on-steel tub after calling American Standard to ensure it would fit. It was easy to install. Follow the advice in the installation guide to make everything dead level and square.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent product I did not install this product on my own - it was installed by a professional so I can not comment on the ease of installation. Aesthetically the unit is nice but seems a bit flimsy. Because it is a direct to stud unit there is no drywall backing the thin plastic walls and you can see a shadow of the studs in your shower walls. Also the plastic bends to the touch if you press on it between the studs. I am confident there are other products out there at the same price that are better quality - but unfortunately this was the only set up in this price range in the size i needed. I would not purchase this product again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really like this tub and surround I read the reviews before I bought this and figured I could add more backing if it felt too thin and flexible.. After doing what the directions said and adding studs where it said, following the glue directions exactly with bead size, pressing then pulling away, waiting then pressing it into the glue again I ended up with a great install.. Not flexing at all.. We really love it, put a row of tile around the edges, looks great!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flimsy and Disappointing I bought this surround to match the Ovation curved tub. The tub itself is made from nice, thick, fiberglass and is very sturdy. This surround, however, is made from impossibly thin acrylic. I mean, I couldn't believe how thin this stuff was. For $250 this is a joke, should be more like $50. I tried to mitigate the flexing by adding perpendicular sister joists and expanding insulating foam but nothing really worked. If you look at this thing the wrong way it bends and flexes. It looks pretty nice and cleans easily, that about all I can say that's nice about it. I expected much more from a name like American Standard and the price I paid.
