Should there be any movement in the base once installed or should it be solid under foot?

Asked by Claire December 17, 2020

Answers

It should be solid under foot. Mine has no movement in it. When installed it needs to be bedded in mortar mix or plaster of paris. Once installed it should be left over night for the base to set up in the base material before stepping in it. . One customer suggested it took 2 80 pound bag of mortar mix-- my installation used about 1 2/3's bags. Installing shower base with no bedding material voids American Standards warranty.

Hello, Thank you for reaching out to the American Standard Consumer Connection Team. You would use a standard shower drain, but the hole in the base is approximately 3-3/16". Can i install real tile over this base or are they made for the wall system?

Asked by Saul December 1, 2019

You should not have any problems using this as a base and tiling over. Yes, it is designed to use their wall system and shower doors for the best fit and finish. I would recommend that you go to your local Home Depot and look at the display (it is in my local stores, probably yours too) so that you feel comfortable using this product with the combination of other materials and installation process you are doing to insure you are waterproofing effectively. You can discuss the scope of your project with one of the Home Depot Reps for ideas and recommendations to insure your project is successful. One other concern that you may consider is the low threshold. Personally (IMO), I think that you would want to use the door rather than a shower curtain to insure that water does not get outside the pan and onto the bathroom floor as it could/will cause moisture related issues later on.

Measure twice, cut once. You will probably have to replumb the drain location as your easiest fix... if you are on a slab, or otherwise cannot re plumb the drain you can do your own shower pan. Depending on your skill levels, you may find the Kerdi floor pan system (or similar product, and tile the pan) May be another option for you.

I installed your 60 × 32 passage shower base without using any mortar underneath. Will this be a problem. Thanks

Asked by Thadlt December 11, 2018

Answer

Mortar is required to support the base. The warranty will not cover any issues with the base if it is not installed correctly.

In the installation video, it shows using shims in the back two corners to support the base. How come they are not mentioned in the video or in the directions for installation. What are the dimensions of those shims?

Asked by Arobb July 29, 2020

Answer

Arobb, Thanks for the question on the Passage Shower base, please contact us directly as I do not see any information on anything regarding the shims you are discussing. Your American Standard Consumer Connection Team.

JOHN, We recommend drain number 751819-XXX. The XXX's stand for the color code you would want. Sicnerely, your American Standard Consumer Connection Team

I question whether the people who gave this 5 stars have made it all the way through their install and actually taken a shower! I wish I had paid attention to the reviewers with the same comments I’m about to make. As you’ll see in the photos, the appearance is great. However, there’s no support under the pan at all. (As you know, the edges are designed to sit on a level floor and the shower would be sloped for water to head toward the drain). Unfortunately, the base is so flimsy, you have to create your floor to match the slope of the part of the shower where you’re walking to take your shower. Literally every square inch needs supported or you will feel the base give way under your feet. Had to pull it up a couple of times to get the floor underneath to match the slope exactly. And that’s hard. Leveling compound wants to go level. Once we finally had it so it felt good to walk on, we did the rest of the construction. (Tiles shower door, etc.) It felt great dry. Guess what? As soon as you take a hot shower, the heat causes the base to expand, which makes it bow in the center. So, when you’re taking a shower, the base is wobbly underneath you from bowing up from the heat. I so wish we had gone another route. We had chosen this based on appearance. Now I’m fairly sure the shower we just built will have to be torn apart in a year or two to replace the base. Are they going to pay for the floor I have to jackhammer to level out? Or the tile I have to tear out and replace? I bet not! DO NOT BUY THIS LOW QUALITY SHOWER BASE. PS - this is literally the first online review I’ve ever written. That’s how bad this thing is!

(What's this)
This shower base was the perfect fit for our situation.. We are in process of making our home suitable for "aging in place".. One of the concerns was difficulty in getting in and out of a bathtub and increased risk of falling. We decided to replace the tub with the American Standard shower base. It has a low threshold of about 2 1/4 inches. It has a slip resistance textured surface in the base. The American Standard shower base is light enough that it can be easily carried to the second floor for installation. The price was very reasonable for the quality. The acrylic/fiberglass base is very sturdy and well made and finished. We are looking forward to staying in this house many more years and enjoying our new shower. A granite or marble type surround kit, sliding doors and grab bars will finish this project. Ease of installation- this base is no difference from any similar base to install - it does take some plumbing and carpenter skills for DIY

(What's this)
We won't be installing this shower base as it came damaged on both of the short ends. This put its durability in to question. The size was perfect but the weight could be heavier to help its strength. My husband wasn't impressed with the base in regards to what he would have to do to make it work on a standard floor. Its best feature is the surface would be easy to clean

Love the look
Love the way it looks but having serious water escaping the doors. Had a contractor put my shower in, not a home job.. Have caulked twice now, checked to make sure rubber seal hasn’t moved under moving door, I’m at the end of my rope with this. Destroyed my wood trim in front of the shower and now drywall is getting wet. Not happy.
