After checking with American Standard if a replacement handle I found at HD would work with a 30 year old faucet, she said it would but required this skirt adaptor. So glad she helped with this. Otherwise I would have struggled to make it work and probably returned the handle in disgust. It took some gentle tapping with a hammer and wood block to get it on the valve. Also, the plastic handle adaptor from the old handle must first be removed before the skirt is placed. Also, make sure the old faucet valve is installed at the proper height to allow the skirt to fully seat or the new handle won't actually open & close the valve. None of this was made known to me, since there were no instructions included.
