How many feet of gutter can be serviced by one downspout?

How many feet of gutter can be serviced by one downspout?
Asked by: Bruce
It depends on where you live, and what storm interval you want to plan for. You can probably google gutter sizing and get a formula along with common tables to describe your area. You will need to know how many inches per hour for either a 10 year, 50 year, or 100 year storm event you want the gutter to handle. It can get quite complicated.

I recommend 24". I had to install one portion at 30" o.c., it worked, but gutter bows slightly straight edge at that span. Fixed it by adding a home made spacer, but 24" worked just right.

I am trying to buy the brown vinyl gutters and accessories in waco-temple- bryan, texas area. can't find at any stores . why?

Asked by: homey
You have two Home Depot stores in your area. If they don't carry them on a regular basis you can always have it shipped to your local store or delivered to your home. I have used these more than once for job sites and will suggest to be sure to get the accessories such as the end caps as needed and the mounting brackets. From there you can get joining adapters and the down spout items.

I would have returned it if I hadn't figured out how bad this was until I finished my shop. This stuff is never straight, it looks like garbae when you put it up cause its massively wavey, but what do you expect I guess when its plastic. I honestly thought it was going to be thicker so it wouldn't bend so easily, not the case. On top of that all the fitting you use to join it, cap and and create a downspout has to be caulked up the ying yang so it doesnt leak every where. Another thing is it doesn't fit flush against your board and rain will fall off the roof in between the gutter and the wood if your shingles dont over hang by at least a full inch. Even if you put the support brackets every 18 inches you still get gaps in-between the gutter and your board. Spend the couple extra bucks and get straight metal gutters, would do anything to be able to return all of this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So-so I would agree, both pro and con with most of the other reviewers. It was relatively easy to install, the trough is inexpensive, but the hardware (plastic hooks) necessary to put it up is very expensive, by comparison. If your roof doesn't extend far enough, like maybe at least 4 inches, the system fails to collect water because the hardware created a gap of at least 1/2 inch, so, the water just flows off the roof and falls between the fascia and the gutter, missing the gutter completely.

Gutters were very affordable, the brackets and accessories not so much. Not crazy about the joint accessory, as it makes a small dam, which will collect some water, that could be enough for mosquitoes to breed.

Do yourself a favor and find an aluminum gutter guy who can cut it on his truck. So many of my clients have tried to buy this and do it themselves. I give it a 70%. So it doesn't catch about 30% of the rain, looks bad, and well, you save some money. It's very frustrating to install gutters then see 30% of the water leak. A client of mine bought $200 worth of this stuff at HD and had a handy man install it. It was so warpy and it leaked so much she ripped it off the next week. I asked to take it home for fun and installed it on my 25 ft patio. It leaked a lot, but it still caught 70% of the rain which I put a rain barrel underneath. Since it's out of sight and just for fun, I'll keep it; but I will never install this if we can see it daily such as the front or the side of the house. In SoCal, it cost me $4.50-9/ linear foot for rain gutters. I put the $4.50/linear foot on my rentals and used a $5-6/lf for my own house. The only difference is how clean their cuts and installations are. They almost all buy their materials from the same place.
