A:  If you are trying to create your own gusher guard i would say 4" to 6" in each direction should be ok. Or you can purchase this item.

Product was not used for the intended purpose, I needs a non-pores surface to mount a suction cup camera to the rear window deck of my car. As I have defroster strips across the rear window the camera would not mount to the window, I have tried mounting plexin-glass with double sided tape to the window but suction cup still didn't work. As you can see from the pictures it worked great.

          Aluminum Gusher Guards (3-Pack
The idea behind a "gusher guard" is to block the excess water that comes down angular roofs and hits with such momentum and volume that it flumes over the rain gutter that encircles the base of the roof. These guards are woefully inadequate. At 2-1/2 tall and about four inches long they would not stop anything, much less a large wave of water. I needed one more guard as I presently have three others in place in the gutters already. They are about 15 inches long and are about 9-10 inches tall. THEY do a great job. This poor excuse for a product should be taken off the shelves. The picture on-line is misleading and I never see any IN the stores. Makes sense. If you saw one, you wouldn't buy it. I like Home Depot; it's a great store. But this product should have been better evaluated before the company started selling it to the public.

Easy to install. Took a few screws. Drill. Ten minutes it was done.

They are not tall enough. Should be about an inch or inch and a half taller.

Not much to say it’s just a pice of aluminum.
