This augers bit has a hexagonal end, which makes it easier to get a good grip in the drill chuck. It's made of good hard metal, and painted. The paint chipped off of the hexagon portion right away, but that's to be expected. The bit performed well, I used it to drill about 150 planting holes in mature sod.(very moist clay soil). Higher RPM's and less downward pressure help to chew thru the mat of roots. After drilling all of those holes, it still looks nearly new, and I know I'll find uses for it in the future. I recommend this if you plan on planting a bunch of bulbs . It's quite long. I'm not sure why it needs to be 24 inches. If you drill deep, know where your utilities /irrigation lines are before you start. It's too long to used while kneeling, and short enough to ensure you stop deeply when using. (This means my back hurts.)

No bending or kneeling...made the hole for the flower bulbs just the right size with one quick spin. So good. Marked the auger with colored tape for the exact depth and drilled. Nothing simpler than that!

They need to be by the cash register where people are buying their plants can see them and ask what do they do. I've used these for years (some were other brands) and would not be without one for spring planting. One of the best things is you can stand up and drill the holes. Be cautious if you are using a strong drill because you could sprain a wrist if you hit a larger root. A handle on the side of the drill helps control the torque of the drill. I like the flat sides on the shaft were the chuck attaches. Round shafts tend to spin out. Home Depot just needs to get the word out about these and they would sell so many they couldn't keep them in stock.

Used this to plant small marigolds - a couple of dozen then used it to dig 6 each holes to loosen soil for transplanting 21 2-gallon shrubs in medium tough Tennessee soil - some rocks/some roots; holes 1' deep and 2' in diameter. Like others I experienced the initial end twisting off but ground some flats on what was left and successfully completed the project. It does not have good steel, but was certainly worth what I paid for it and was a significant help in accomplishing what I was doing. I had it chucked in a 1/2" Milwaukee right angle drill - hit rocks and roots - and it is still available for the next project. STRONGLY recommend using a drill w/a reverse :-).

It works great for that. Much much easier and no mess due to excess dirt removed from hole that wasn't necessary. I have been using it to plant much bigger items like shrubs. Just use this dandy tool to dig a series of perimeter holes then dig out the middle. Much easier and neater. The best thing is that it has a teflon like coating. Clean up is a snap. Only problem is where to store it - it's a little bulky and noplace is the right place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good tool. Only 1 issue that stopped it from 5... good tool. Only 1 issue that stopped it from 5 stars and its when I used with an impact driver through compacted soil, the end of the shaft broke off at the point of contact w/drill. Solution: used regular drill which worked but required more effort due to not having the impact driver power.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I returned this to Home Depot. It did not... I returned this to Home Depot. It did not work as expected, after digging for 2-3 inches it stalled and would just “spin” in the drill. No matter what I tried it would not stay tight in the chuck. Poor design, it should have larger diameter stem and flatter and larger stem surface.
