Would this be ideal for digging a trench?

It depends what you are trenching through, but generally speak, a spade would be better for getting through and around whatever you encounter. Having a square point, a transfer shovel might be good for evening out the bottom of a trench. Also, if you are trenching to run cables, you don't need that wide of a cut, so a narrower shovel might also be better.

With the exception of the thin rubber handle grip, the shovel works great. I bought it to replace a broken shovel August 8. I needed to move 10 yards of top soil. The handle grip tore the first day. See image.

Sturdy, aesthetic shovel. Light enough to handle for a female with average strength, as myself. Love it!
