Questions & Answers

Removes grass?

Does this remove sod that has thick roots. I live in the south and the soil is clay
Asked by: Plantano13
In my experience it would be VERY difficult to use this for sod in clay soil. I live in your area too. I was not impressed with the tool for our particular area. I can see where it would work in sandy or loose soil, but not our south Texas soil.

Why does the blade appear to be covered in rubber or plastic?

Doesn't this covering make the blade less sharp than if it were bare metal?
Asked by: Richard
It is metal with black spray paint.

Is this hoe made in the USA? Watching the Ames video I'd think it would be but the Ames True Temper brand is made in China.
Asked by: Dave
Don't know. Has never made any difference to me.

I used it to weed out some ivy (with some hidden poison ivy) around one of my trees in the backyard and it was super fast. In the past I would give up using a typical hoe, a warren hoe, a garden fork just to get them up. But with just the action hoe, it was a breeze. What a great idea and saves me so so much time. It basically is sharp on both sides of this flat loop and what it seems to do is undercut the root system. This is much much faster than using a typical hoe that would hack and pull. The action hoe is angle and with its slight wiggle (this is normal) you can like cut a sliver of the soil, going back and forth. This was really fast. I am glad to have found and use this type of hoe. It will be my go to hoe for fast weeding and still use my warren hoe (pointed) to get at the weeds that are all to close to my flowers. Overall, if you need to do heavy weeding, you need to use this action hoe. The action hoe is also called a hula hoe, or a stirrup hoe. I guess the name changes or added thru the years.

This action hoe turns out to be one of the best yard tools, I've ever purchased. It's so cool just how much you can do with it! I've had mine for almost 3 years & it's still going strong! Being a rookie with many yard tools, I've learned that after making a pull cut (like a hoe) , I can push it forward & it'll make another cut. A simple change of angle will provide you with deeper or more shallow cuts. I'll even turn it over & use it like a mini-rake. It's also nice, the blades are so easy to keep clean. Buying this is one of the best $20.00 purchases I've ever made!

Be prepared to sharpen: this version of the "Hula Hoe" is shipped very dull, no sharper than a butter knife, and will need some file time before it can be used. Even then, while it will slice through fresh green weeds, it balks at grasses and dried stalks. And the "action" in an action hoe comes from the slight movement of the blade in relation to the handle, so the cutting edges can make full contact with the vegetation. Not here—the blade is fixed on the handle and doesn’t move at all. It’s good at fluffing the top half-inch of soil, but not for much else.

This tool is outstanding getting those flat leaf weeds with dense root systems.I was able to remove a large bag full of these weeds in a fraction of the time it would take to dig-and-pull them by hand. The Action Hoe gives you the leverage to quickly grab and pull weeds. It is not so great for those weeds with a single root that shoots strait down into the ground. I will just chop those kind off, leaving most of the root buried under ground.

Couldn't get through some of the tougher patches of crab grass, but overall the product is excellent. I bought this brand because I like the rubber grip on the handle, but found out it wasn't long enough, so my hand still blistered, even with gloves on. Would love for the manufacturer to extend the rubber comfort grip.

I was looking for an easier way to remove weeds, so,.I reviewed instructional You-Tube videos which eventually lead me to this tool. The Action Hoe did everything expected of the tool. Cuts both ways, pulls out/cuts weeds and cultivates the upper layer of soil. It does take a little elbow grease, but easy to use. I would recommend raking periodically as you cut. Good tool for the money.

I have had one for 20 years and it's a little worn so I am going to buy me a new one this week. This one is looks better than the one I have now. Saves your back, no more pulling weeds by hand, it makes getting those weeds out a cinch. I have used it before the weeds are dead and after the weeds are dead and it works very well either way. Makes the task go a lot faster.

I wish I had bought it sooner. I believe if the blade should work loose a bit that tightening the screws would be easy to do. The long handle helps bending over to a minimum and is a much appreciated feature.
