Q:I would like to use this product on my outside, cement foundation that was paint many years ago. Does it need to be repainted before I use this product? My house is around 900 sq. ft. how many gallons of your product would I need? Thank you.
by|Jun 11, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  You can use Blue Max for that application as long as the existing paint has good adhesion to the surface. It is UV sensitive so if it is above grade you will need to top coat it with a quality latex paint. If the surface area you are coating is 900 sq. ft. you will need 18 gallons to do two coats.

My cottage basement gets very wet after a rain and I've tried all kinds of sealant sprays and products that were suppose to keep water from seeping through the concrete walls but nothing seemed to work. I decided to give Ames Blue Max a try and I really think this is going to work. Makes my dingy basement look clean and bright with the white Ames Blue Max waterproofing sealer! The "paint" is SUPER thick and takes a couple of coats to thoroughly fill in the cracks. Make sure you get more cans than you would normally use on a wall. This 1 gallon can should cover 100 sq ft. There was no heavy (or even light) smell with this paint. It takes about 4 hours to dry to the touch. My paint brush came clean with just warm water! I used a brush to apply this paint because I wanted to make sure I was able to get around the pipes going through the wall and into the small crevasses where I've noticed water before. The rubbery consistency of this product has me convinced it's going to work as stated so I'm really excited for it to rain so I can confirm that my basement will stay dry! I like that it's also mildew and mold resistant, too! It also states that it can be used on wood, metal, stone, brick and asphalt so the price of this gallon of sealer is well worth it. I plan to use it around the outside lower part of my shed that does not have siding and only has exposed wood (the lower 1 foot area around the shed). After applying this sealer, the instructions say to paint over it with an exterior paint because the Ames Blue Max should not be exposed to UV sunlight which I'm happy to do to make sure the paint matches the siding and looks non-obtrusive. I am really impressed with this product.

Keeps moisture out! This product is very thick and is essentially liquid rubber, it certainly smells that way too! It takes many coats as seen on instructions but you feel you have a great seal once it dries. Although the product is very thick it does seem to go on slightly transparent, as you add more layers the white really shows. I used this in my basement on some slightly discolored upper concrete blocks that was chipping old latex paint off. I scraped the chipping paint and applied this product, just to keep the small amount of moisture out. I wouldn't use this on a severely compromised wall with flowing water, but I know this will do the job for what I needed it for.

My intended use for this was not for waterproofing in the basement, but instead for coating an RV roofkto keep the rain out. I needed something readily accessible to coat the roof and keep things water tight after we had some damage during a hail storm. This product did the job, as its still just an elastomeric coating. It rolled on easily, and seems to be staying rubbery with good sealing characteristics. I can think of a few more things I could deal with this as well, so I think it will be good for more than just sealing basements. As I had it shipped to me, I am especially happy with the packing. I've never received a gallon can that was so well protected. Good job!

          Hi Russ,
Thank you for the review. We are happy you are satisfied. Be advised, though, Blue Max is UV sensitive and needs to be top coated with something like Ames Maximum Stretch. AmesWaterproofing

This sealer goes on thick and covers well on cinder block walls. Most of the small holes and cracks are filled on the first coat if you give it a thick coat. Once you have enough coats to completely seal the surface, you will have a rubbery barrier to keep out water completely. This is a great solution for damp basement walls as it works on the interior just as well as the exterior. If you have to create a water tight seal on the interior of your basement, this would be the best product to do so because of the elasticity of the sealer and the ease of use with a paint brush or thick roller. Because it is so thick, buy extra gallons because the coverage is less than you would think.

Time will tell how well this stands up to the rain and my sinking sunroom. WE had a huge Live Oak in our backyard. It was lifting the slab. Once it was fell, it's roots were still under our sunroom. As time passes (about 8 years) the roots are beginning to decompose. Where this wall met the slab it was built on has been my nemesis. I've tried everything I heard of including the Flex Seal as seen on TV. Everything I tried failed. This product is f=different. I saw it creep into cracks and crannies that nothing else did. This is supposed to remain flexible and allow for expansion/contraction. This should do the job. I opened the can and saw that it was blue and watery. I assumed it would go on blue then need a paint job to becomes white. Wow! Was I wrong. I took it to Home Depot to get it shook. It is white and very thick now (See photos). I poured it into the pan and it just laid there. It didn't ooze into the pan, it just sat there. Once I ran my roller over it, it clung to the roller cover pretty evenly. It rolled on like a thick paint. The spread was amazing to me after seeing it being so thick. The end result is that it seems to be as good as they claim. I can't find as much as a pinhole that isn't filled in. This stuff really works. Ask me in 6 months how it has lasted. That's the only question. I took my masking tape off the same night I applied this and some of the freshly applied sealer came with the tape.

AMES BLUE MAX 1 GAL. WHITE BASEMENT WATERPROOFING SEALER REGULAR GRADE does a good job in keeping water away from the cracks... I have cracks in multiple places in my friend's basement and i used most of this to fill the cracks. I plan to apply this in multiple portions of basement to waterproof it and be able to keep accidents with water or paint from my kids run the basement.

This product has a low coverage area of only 100 square feet so keep that in mind when planning your project. Even with its pudding/ gel like consistency in my test application areas any stain or raw concrete/block it was not a one coat coverage product at all. anything darker than the white paint required a second and in a few places third coat before it was no longer visible. It does apply easily and evenly. I am applying this product as a preventative before I have an issue, not a fix to existing trouble but I cant see why it will not be an OK product to help prevent or reduce any minor water seepage along a subgrade block wall.

Ames Blue Max is the product of basement waterproofing. But I am doing a testing installation around the bath tub where we get high Humidity and water interface before use in the basement and make my finish floor. As of now the product looks good. It is a nice rubberized materials, using tool of brush is working smoothly. The drying time little bit longer and I applied three coat to get my desire thickness.

I've used this rubberized paint in my basement, on the cement block walls. Coverage is very adequate as long as the first coat is spread thinly, followed by a second thin coat after the first one dries. There has been no water seepage, no moisture on the inside. Since one gallon only covers 100 square feet, I used this in the corners first, where moisture has been the most noticeable, then the bottom blocks.
