How do I operate the retractable screen? The top window is stuck in place.
Asked by: writergirl
The window shade type mechanism has a tendency to jam. Screen will come out of the side track. Don't try to overpower it as you will find that the pot metal tabs on the release mechanism will fracture. Replacements not available from Anderson. Replacing my door this year.

Ok. So is this a screen and a window? I am really confused. Do each of the panels slide up and down? Nowhere in your description does it say that these 2 panels work individually? Yet, the reviewers say "the screen was easy to move"? Please explain the panels and how they work. Also what does "self-storing" mean?? not explained anywhere either.
Asked by: sherri
The top window slides down to reveal the screen. When the window is slid back up the screen stores back up in the top of the door.

Andersen products to have a very high reputation, but this door isn't worth the price or the Andersen name. We had the door professionally installed and there are several immediate issues - the roll screen mechanism is already coming apart, it separates from the track (see photo). The roll screen closure at the top feels so cheap and causes the thin plastic top portion of the door to pull so severely that it is clear this functionality will fail soon. The hydraulic door closure didn't come with nuts or anything to secure it so the pins just barely hold it together but any unintentional upward kick will knock it completely apart. Additionally the door closure either closes so softly that the door doesn't latch or slams so hard that it sounds like the cheap $50 door we replaced. Home Depot will allow us to return the door but that will cost us another professional uninstallation and reinstallation since we arranged it with our own contractor. Buyer beware.

However, the template they included for drilling the holes for the handle/lock was not folded properly and resulted in the holes not being lined up. We should have checked that before applying the template, but at the same time why would it be pre-folded if it isn’t going to be correct? So after the panic attack of messing up the handles, we were able to chisel the holes over a bit and make it work. I love how much light the door lets in, and the ease of working the retractable screen. I also love that it locks. Just adds one more level of security. It did take longer than the advertised “2 hour easy install,” but it was an easy 2-person job, probably took us 3.5 hours. Ultimately not bad!

The only feature i found less than satisfactory was the closer does not allow the door to open a full 90 degree. not a deal breaker, since it was fully installed at that point. installed two doors over 2 days, about 3 hrs 1st door, 2 hrs 2nd door. could probably do in 1.5. They look great, the screens are great for the air flow, You should be very pleased with the value. installed 1st week may '19

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Reasonable Price, Huge Mistake This door looked great in store, so I purchased 2 for my home. Aside from being installed incorrectly (regrettably, I went with a local company instead of Home Depot's installation), the door came with 2 ripped screens and the parts that connect them to the frame were snapped. It is hard to say whether the closers bent due to improper installation or if they're just cheaply made. Lastly, the door insulation is terrible (again not sure if its the make or shoddy install), the sashes drip condensed water, and the windows fog up and ice over in the winter. These doors constantly get stuck and have warped considerably. After a year of owning these doors, I will need to completely replace them; I don't even think they're repairable at this point. Pay the $50 for a better door, and get Home Depot to install (they will likely offer a some type of warranty/guarantee). I've always heard good things about Anderson doors, but it would be better to save your money on this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not easy to install, but a great product This was a very difficult door to install. The manufacturer leaves a lot of undone items. I've installed countless storm doors, but never an Anderson. The directions are clear, as long as you follow them, you'll be fine. Do not skip ahead, or make any assumptions. I really didn't enjoy having to drill the holes for the handset and lockset! Come to think of it, I drilled a lot of holes all over the place to install this door. The quality is above the average Larson or other type storm door. I think this door will last a long time, and it seems better built than other brands that I have installed. The hidden screen was the reason that this door was purchased. I know there are other brands with the same option. Lastly, this is not a door for the average DIY'er to install. You've gotta bring your "A" game to properly install this door. Installation by a professional would be advised. I'm a professional, and this was no cake walk.

Within one year the screen section literally fell apart. It was all downhill from there. I had issues with the screws that go into the door from the hinges constantly coming loose. They finally stripped out so I replaced them with larger screws and had the same problem. The handle and lock assembly fell apart a few years later and someone at the Victoria Texas Home Depot gave me a new set at no charge. Unfortunately the door continued to get worse. Finally, after 15 years of frustration, I called Andersen/Emco to see about getting the door replaced (because it had a "Lifetime Warranty") and I was told that my door problems weren't covered under warranty. I have a Pella door on the other entrance to my house and it almost exactly like this Andersen door. The difference? The Pella door isn't falling apart. I guess I'll throw this Andersen junk into the garbage where it belongs and replace it with a Pella. Go ahead and buy one of these if you don't plan on using it very often and you want to throw away your money. If it is going on your main entrance it won't last.
