Questions & Answers

Is this item metal or composite?

Asked by: Rick
It's plastic.

Does this lock mount flush to the window or is part of the mechanism recessed in the sash?

I replaced a window sash with a new sash purchased from Andersen. When I took the lock off the old sash, I discovered the mechanism is partially recessed into the sash frame. The replacement sash does not have an area cut out so the old lock can be mounted. I will need a lock that mounts flush, or figure out a way to create a cutout area in the new frame so the old lock can be mounted. Below is a picture of the old sash with the lock mechanism removed.

Andersen replacement Sash Lock part number 1669002 for Narrowline windows requires no recess. It is flush mount. It is made of a composite material; a very strong plastic - not metal like the original part. On March 1, 2017, the lowest price I could find online was $7.98 (the same as the store price) at Homedepot (priced at about $14.00 on the Andersen web site - and the Andersen web site is not as user friendly). I bought one 1669002 at the store yesterday and installed it today (March 1, 2017) so cannot speak to its durability. The original windows were installed when the house was built in 1994. We have about 25 windows and 3 or 4 need replaced so the original part has endured well. Because the Everbilt SashLock it is much less expensive at $2.37, made of metal, and seemed to be about the same size, I bought and tried one. Although it fits in the same screw holes, the keeper hook extends over the window sash too far and will not allow the window to open. A suggestion: when the original Andersen sash lock rotating piece begins to show wear (begins to wiggle or show too much play), swap it out to a window that is used infrequently. Doing that may gain a few more years of use before requiring to replace any. And they will all look the same. The replacement 1669002 color is slightly different, bigger overall (including about 1/2" longer). They are very easy to replace. Only one tool is required - a standard #2 Phillips screwdriver- and takes less than 5 minutes. Be careful not to over tighten the screws to avoid stripping the wood threads. Good luck.

Will this fit a 1989 narroline 200? The description says 1991 or greater, but I do not see another part number.
Asked by: Miked
It fit my 1976 Narrowline. You have to repace both halves, but the screw holes and cut-outs match even though the new latch is wider. You will get both halves in the kit.

The replacement today is plastic, even though it has the same model number. The screw holes are compatible, so the plastic one is easy to install in place of the metal one. The window sashes do not align well, and the new plastic one broke when I latched it shut. (This probably was why the metal one broke also.) So, I had to buy a second one for another $9.95. I used longer screws and and spacer washers to raise the second latch about 3/8 inch so it would align better. That worked. Still, I'd rather have had a metal latch instead of plastic.
