I happened to have one block & I measured it & the inside opening is 5'' square. I was ck'ng for to see if H'Depot was carrying these & saw the question. Hope this answers your query. Take care, Dave @ 93436.

Would a standard 4 in x 4 in wood post stand snugly inside this block (purpose: to place fence posts around a small patio without having to dig post holes)?

Howdy DIYDiane, A 8" inch cinderblock is actually 7 5/8. The thickness is 1 1/4. This would make the inside diameter roughly 5 and 1/8 inches. happy building, Coach Dave
