what is the red arrow for? does it point toward the tubing or away? I have not seen this on other brands.

Answer

The red arrow on the Apollo Pro Pinch Clamps must be pointed downward for the product to function correctly. The red tab/collar when pointed downward allows the pinch clamp to sit on the pipe. On vertical runs, pinch clamps tend to fall down the pipe and it can be hard to make a crimp while using your tool and holding the clamp. This item eliminates those troubles. Once the pinch clamp is completely fastened to the PEX pipe, the red tab will pop off signifying a completed crimp.

Should the red tab fly off when the pinch is complete?

Answer

The arrow on the tab should point away from the fitting that you are installing. The arrow's purpose is to ensure that the tab is installed such that it holds properly at the end of the pipe prior to you completing the pinch. The pinch clamp itself does not require a particular orientation but the tab works best when the arrow points away from your fitting.
