What is the difference between 520 and 520BLV?

Asked by: jose
The standard 520 adhesive is a solvent based adhesive. The 520 BLV adhesive is a low VOC product that is black in color. They are applied differently, so please follow installation instructions to ensure proper installation.

Be sure to note the manufacturing date printed on the top of the cap before buying this at the store. The label says the shelf life is 1 year, but the can I bought was THREE years old. Despite the age, I believe my can is still good because it was easy to mix by stirring and was functional. I'm disappointed that Home Depot isn't more proactive about removing expired products from its shelves. Given the high price of this product, I expected a premium product that worked better than general purpose adhesives for pipe insulation. Instead, I found this product to be very messy and no better than ordinary contact cement. The viscosity and stickiness out of the can make this stuff maximally messy (similar to ordinary contact cement), and the black color makes sure any that is dripped really sticks out (unlike clear contact cement). As others have mentioned, this adhesive doesn't bond instantly when mating surfaces are brought into contact like contact cement. This means seams under even the slightest tension must be held for some time or taped. It's pretty clear why this product sits on the shelf unsold for years. Save yourself money and aggravation by using ordinary contact cement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Available at Home Depot! :) I'm glad Home Depot started selling this product! It is a necessity when installing closed-cell pipe insulation. This makes the job complete! I don't have to go to a specialist anymore to get the adhesive. This is much more convenient for me! Thanks Home Depot!

You apply the adhesive to both surfaces, then let dry before pushing the surfaces together. But not too dry, or it won't stick. I had to hold joints together for a while to get them to stay closed. They tended to creep open after a few seconds. It's also REALLY messy stuff! Gloves are a must. Or just do yourself a favor and buy the self-sealing insulation with the adhesive already on it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The lid was glued closed I had to improvise for the project and return the can. The lid was glued closed I had to improvise for the project and return the can. I am sure someone opened the can and applied the glue to the threads and closed it back up. The project was 35 miles from the store so bo quick trip back for another can
