4-Gal Pail Augason Farms Breakfast Variety Pail Emergency Food Supply 6 Varieties 25-Year Shelf Life is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I am an old guy born and raised on the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina so my ideal breakfast is liver pudding (yes really) eggs sunny side up and grits, and lots of orange juice. Augason Farms products are not my ideal breakfast, but after a hurricane, blizzard, power outage, job loss, or any of a thousand other things that can and will eventually go wrong, it is pretty good eating. What is in this bucket? I like the six grain banana cereal best, next runner up is the banana chips which I sprinkle cinnamon on... Serving size (hummmmm) the cereal comes in a 4 serving pouch which is 2 cups, or ONE serving for me, and I prefer to eat it dry. Next best (in my humble opinion) is the Maple brown sugar oatmeal, which I like thick and with some real honey added for medicinal purpose and my sweet tooth, next is the buttermilk pancakes which I like to add fruit into the batter, the last two items are the morning moo milk and the strawberry cream of wheat I am not a fan of either one, but they are not horrible and we are talking emergency food and I am a guy who likes liver pudding so your taste will differ and so will how you prepare these items. I buy lots of Augason Farms products, I have the #10 size cans of many of their products and use them all the time as part of my food storage rotation. Which brings me to the 10 years to 25 shelf life... I live in South Texas now and we are not known for our cool weather, I run the AC almost everyday of the year so I never let anything get beyond 7 to 10 years just because. I had some pancake and muffin mix from another company that went bad because the yeast activated, so items with yeast, lots of natural oils, acidic and exposed to heat do not last that (25 years) long.

I live in Hurricane Alley and my opinion of emergency food storage taste and value comes from going through Rita, Wilma, and Irma without adequate food supplies. I am reviewing three different Augason Farms varieties. When the news predicts "The Big One" all season, every season, the stores empty out even if we don't get any wind or power outage. This breeds complacency and this past season, I just didn't have the extra funds to buy a lot of extras that I may or may not need. As luck would have it, I needed it and didn't have enough. I can't tell you the sense of peace I had just lifted this pail, knowing we would be covered no matter what the news said or if a storm or other power outage would hit. I's heavy, very heavy and it's loaded with breakfast foods. I tried the cereal and made some of the milk and everything was good. It's not a chef's meal, it's food to satisfy and nourish while you're in a bad predicament. It was fresh and I found it tasty but like I said, I am not picky. I am glad I got to try these first because I will be adding fruits and vegetable and start keeping a closet full. You don't have to be a prepper, I am not but I do like to be prepared. I am going to review the other variety as well. Don't hesitate, this is as good as it gets as far as emergency food goes and I think everyone would benefit from at least one tub.

The most important meal of the day is breakfast, and this pail covers it all. This is a great emergency food supply pail containing 6 varieties of food. If you live anywhere where you experience inclement weather events, like hurricanes, then this is 4 gallon pail of breakfast foods is something you may want to consider adding to your emergency supplies. It comes with a great assortment of meal items including: pancakes, oatmeal, multi-grain banana cereal, strawberry creamy wheat, and a snack option of banana chips. It even has a powdered milk alternative drink called "morning moos." Everything is very easy to make by adding water based on the instructions. I could eat breakfast for any meal of the day, so this breakfast emergency food supply is a must have item.

This is a very convenient (and not bad tasting) way to be prepared for a disaster. I tried the '6 Grain Banana Cereal' and found it to be very acceptable as I ate it without any sugar or milk. I think it would have been excellent with brown sugar and a little milk. I had my wife taste it too, and she thought it was comparable to the cereal she regularly eats. I thought the packaging was excellent as it will store easily with other kits and it is sealed well (almost too well) against the elements. I also think the packaging would hold up to most if not all disasters. However, you should tape a multi-tool to the container so you can get the container open after the disaster strikes. I tried to open the container without tools and I couldn't do it. I had to cut the tear strip to get it started and after it was removed I had to use a screwdriver to pry the top off. So, part of being prepared is to have a tool for opening the container. (Think of it like having the key on the top of the can of Spam.) Also, to be fully prepared for the emergency (whatever it may be) you will also need an emergency stove, water and a pan so you can cook your food. This kit does an excellent job of providing food for an emergency, but you have to be prepared with the rest.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This breakfast variety pail contains: oatmeal, pancakes, cereal, creamy wheat, dehydrated milk and banana chips. These packets contain either dehydrated or freeze dried foods. Most of it needs to be cooked which means water and fuel source. If it was really an emergency food supply, it would be ready to eat. It is food storage supply. It is mostly pancakes and cereal. I was hoping for protein. The pail is ridiculously hard to open. It took my husband and myself armed with a screwdriver and claw hammer to finally get it open. There should be an opener provided with each pail.
