Questions & Answers

Does the white 7900 come in semi gloss?

Asked by: Kelly
The 7900 white is the number assigned to the Satin Enamel. The same exact white color in the semi gloss is 3900. I just confirmed with Behr. Different numbers because one is assigned to Satin/Semi, but exact same colors. Hope that helps.

I'm going to paint my cabinets with the Behr Alkyd will Behr Primer Sealer be a good primer

Asked by: RonsDad
In my experience, priming is just as important as the final coat, especially with smooth surfaces! The primer/sealer will work great especially if your original color on the cabinets are dark! Good luck

Is this paint suitable for a radiator? Can it withstand the heat?
Asked by: Linda
Hi Linda, Thanks for writing in! It's not recommend using the Alkyd Semi-Gloss Paint on surfaces that will get too hot to touch. If this is the case, it's best to use a specialty product made to resist high temperatures. Sorry for the inconvenience, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

I've primed (oil based, 2 coats) and now applied two coats of this Alkyd Semi-Gloss enamel sanding before each coat of primer/paint. I know it drys pretty quickly (measured in hours) but cures slowly (measured in weeks). How long do I need to wait to reinstall the cabinet doors? I bought a pair of cloth gloves to avoid fingerprints while handling them. I'd like to get the doors out of the living room before my wife gets home!!
Asked by: Phil
I installed my doors 24 hours after the last coat. I didn't use gloves and had no issues!

Customer Reviews

1 gal. White Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel Interior/Exterior Paint is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest way to paint cabinets I am in the middle of a massive home renovation (and I've got 2 small kids) so oil paints for cabinets was never even on the table! The Alklyd paint is amazing. It is a very nice, smooth application and I can work on a cabinet in the kitchen during my kids nap time without having to worry about being out in the garage because of fumes. I used 3 coats on my cabinets (because I'm picky) but 2 would do the trick. It dries nice and tough and I'm not worried as much about scratching and wear and tear - it's a lot better than using a basic paint for something that takes such a beating. I highly recommend it if you're remodeling a kitchen and you're on a budget - painting cabinets can add so much to a space and this is the stuff to use. Rated 4 out of 5 by from great paint Painted cabinets for a client, used a foam roller (4 inch made for cabinets and doors) also used a good Purdy brush. paint went on nice and smooth, 2 coats. it's important to use the right brush and roller to get a good finish. the paint self leveled, no roller marks or brush lines. dried for second coat in 2 hours, 24 hours and ready to reinstall. did not experienced the paint drying too quickly or having the paint too thick as others noted. I am a professional, not a diy'er.

Prepped them the way I have all the other times I've painted cabinets. Annnnd...NO. Unless you are a pro with pro equipment and pristine surfaces, forget it. It's been a week and a half and it's STILL not dry. I have a huge mess of finger prints, gouges, marks! And that's after leaving them in a sealed garage for a week!! What a HUGE waste of time!! Not to mention I either get brush marks, or orange peel from the foam roller. Just looks like a big fat hot mess. I had to go buy new cabinets and rent a pro sprayer and use a different product.

Thin coats are a must, but not too thin because the paint can be hard to work with. I do see paint brush strokes on a off-white color, but I'm not fussy about that. I used liquid deglosser, did not prime. Took two coats of enamel, 4+ hours of dry time between coats. I did not use a top coat. Amazing coverage. Holding up well so far (one week), wipes down very easily. It chipped in two spots near cabinet handles, probably my (fingernail) fault for putting them back in the kitchen so quickly and not giving them full time to cure. But they looked so nice I couldn't help it. I'm also lazy enough where I didn't remove the drawers to paint (I did remove the cabinet doors). Thin strokes worked fine without runs on the drawer faces. Really transformed my kitchen. Next I'll do my bathroom cabinet. I went to ANOTHER STORE and asked for something similar to this. I used one brush stroke and returned it. Was 2x more than a quart of this paint and awful covered. I went and got Behr!

It took some trial and error to figure out how to brush this paint to get it to lay well, and I did have serious problems with tiny bubbles in the paint. By the third coat I had it mostly figured out but it still dried with some tiny bubbles and that was super frustrating. The brush marks leveled out well and the paint is curing to a nice hard finish. I haven't used the cabinets at all but I expect the paint will be very durable from the looks of things. If it wouldn't be for the bubbles, I'd probably try this paint again.

Painting with a brush isn't difficult but I would recommend spraying over brushing. if you spray it will look awesome. Wasn't able to smooth out brush strokes as well as I can with oil based. Also it drys to the touch in about 2 to 3 hours but it doesn't feel hard and almost rubbery but give it some more time and it will harden up. I think this is what people refer to in that it doesn't dry fast. I painted between 60 and 70 degrees.

I've painted kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets and this is the first time I've had a problem, plus the first time using this paint. Not only does it leave brush marks and roller marks but the paint looks like different finishes. Sometimes it looks like flat paint and you can't touch it up without the painting the entire piece over again. The sheen is so inconsistent, I don't get it! I am using the satin paint, not the semi gloss, so one would think it wouldn't be this difficult. I have spent days on this project and I don't know what to do, it looks horrible. Home depot said they will contact Behr and see if they have any ideas. I am going to have to sand and repaint my entire kitchen with a different paint. I am beyond frustrated and I can't use my kitchen in this mess. SOOO unhappy!!
