BEHR 1 qt. #BCP23 Grecian Garland Interior Chalk Decorative Paint is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 334.

I refinished two family heirloom pieces from the 1920's originally done in the 1960's by my mother. We decided to give these pieces a makeover with new hardware. Contrary to the chalk paint instructions, I stripped the pieces to remove years of varnish and stencil work since the surface was not smooth. I repaired some small imperfections with wood filler. I also applied a primer to eliminate grain bleed on the white drawers. I was not happy with Behr primer so I used Zinsser water based primer. The chalk paint is a little tricky to use since it dries rather quickly. I found I needed two coats and I let it dry 24 hours between coats. I also sanded with 320 grit before final coat. Since I never did a wax finish before I followed the Behr instructions and was not happy with the streaking. Since I used the clear coat there should be no streaking. After researching and even calling Behr, I identified the issue. Behr recommends either a brush or cloth application for the wax. What I found works best is to apply wax in a circular motion using a chalk & wax brush then wipe off in long soft strokes with a soft lint free cloth. This is the key step to waxing, wipe lightly once or twice to remove excess wax. Behr never mentions to wipe off. This method produces a thin evenly coat of wax. I applied two thin coats using this method. I allowed the pieces to cure for two weeks before I put anything on them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Experienced with chalk paint, very disappointed. I have a lot of experience painting furniture and working with various chalk paints. I painted the walls of my home exclusively with Behr products so I was excited to give this product a try. I had horrible, streaky results that were only exacerbated by the wax application. I did four coats, carefully sanding and cleaning the surface in between. I am now faced with stripping the entire piece (a large hutch) and starting over with latex paint. Besides the wasted $60 I spent on crappy paint, this endeavor was also a huge waste of my time. Though I like Behr’s interior wall paints this experience has been very disappointing and I will use Sherwin Williams in the future.

I LOVE and have used the Behr wall paint for years.....however this chalk paint is horrible. I have never had a problem with any of the 3 other brands of chalk paint I've used. This paint seems thin enough coming out of the can, but clumps quickly on the furniture. I wanted to quickly cover a 5 shelf unit I had that would only have taken 2 coats at most of another brand. I have applied 3 coats of the Behr (in a mustard color) and it is still streaky. It says on the can to use a primer, which I did not. The other 3 brands I had used did not require a primer and have covered beautifully. This paint must absolutely need it - which will make your projects more costly and time consuming. Also sanding in between coats?? With a good chalk paint, you shouldn't have to unless you've left a drip mark you didn't see before the paint dried! I have used an entire can on this one piece and the coverage is still horrible. I will be blending another brand over the top to try to salvage my project. Sorry Behr, but never again. I have a can of the Behr farmhouse white here that I am throwing in the garbage instead of wasting my time! Other brands may cost $10 more than yours, but WELL worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this paint! I recently painted an old vanity and I love how this paint went on. It was easy to use & clean up. I’ve used other chalk paint & this is my favorite so far. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from COLOR CHANGE AFTER WAXING I got the classic noir paint which is their black paint. After it was mixed at HD the associate swatched it on the top of the can. The color matched my expectations. When I got home to do it, I shook the can and stirred with a stir stick prior to applying the paint. The paint was straight up DARK GRAY. I decided to roll with it, let it dry, and applied Behr’s clear wax. The wax is awful. Don’t recommend. It left a bunch of white Marks when it dried. I ended up sanding it down repainting and using Valspar’s seal. When I applied the seal the paint turned from gray to black. An annotation about that fun fact been would’ve been helpful. The paint itself was also very thin in comparison to the Rust-Oleum premixed chalk paints which are more full coverage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleased with Behr Chalk Paint and wax I found the product easy to work with and was extremely pleased with the end result. I applied the onyx grey in long strokes going with the grain allowing some of the original to show through. I then waxed all of it with clear and after the clear was dry, highlighted with dark wax. After completely dry, buffed it.

I can only speak for the color "Classic Noir", because that's the only behr chalk paint I have tried. I'm not sure if the lighter/other colors perform better, but Classic Noir is awful. I have been painting furniture and decor for over 10 years and I've used many kinds of paints, including other chalk paints by other brands. This one is thinner and runny compared to other brand's ive used. But I can still work with that, not a huge deal to me. The problem for me is the color is NOT black, and there was major inconsistencies in the paint. I got it mixed just hours before applying it to my table that we sanded and prepped for refinishing. After one coat I immediately hated it, but still let it dry overnight to give it the benefit of the doubt and see how it dried. It looked terrible. It was a medium gray color with black speckles throughout. Definitely not the black color that it swatched originally. It's like it wasnt mixed properly and the color was also way off. I returned it and they had me speak to the paint mixing person to allow the refund, and he even told me that he "over-mixed it" to hopefully not have an issue and agreed from my photos it was bad. It seemed as though im not the only one who's had this problem. We mixed it with the deep base as we were supposed to, so that also wan't the issue. I do not recommend, at the very least the classic noir color in this line.

I have done many pieces of furniture with Annie Sloan paint many years ago and decided to try Behr since it cost half the price. It had a different consistency but in the end the piece came out perfect. I lightly sanded first then steel wool then wipe it down clean with a damp cloth. Apply the paint not heavy but even. When dry I used lighly steel wool again to remove brush marks then wipe it down and do another coat or so. Once all dry I apply the wax and rub it in. Then use a little steel wool and buff it smooth. It's how I have always done it. I am very happy and will buy it again.
