Questions & Answers

can this barn paint be used on metal front door

Asked by: caro
I assume your talking about a standard main entry door, for residential use... With that said, I don't see why you couldn't. Has the door been previously painted? If so, I wouldn't apply this paint over a gloss finish, latex paint or on any oil paint, without priming first. I would use the current paint type primer to transition to this oil-latex blend. This paint doesn't bond well to unprepared metal, either, such as plain metal roofing for example. If there is oil paint currently on the door, then I would highly suggest using an oil primer to aid in the hold of this paint. So, yes it can. I would just make sure you prepare any previously painted door. Keep in mind, this is an oil-latex blend, so in the event it needs to be repainted, you might not want to put latex paint over this without using an oil primer first. Other than that, for a main entry door, and the fact everyone will be close to it, I would apply thinner coats rather than 1 heavy coat. It will most likely come out more pleasing...

My picket fence is still bright white several months after painting. I did use an oil base primer/sealer first over aged raw cedar to prevent color bleed through that would yellow it.
