Q:Is the pecan water base stain the same color as the pecan water-based stain and poly combination?
by|Nov 19, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hi LogDog, thanks for the question. The Pecan Water-Based Stain, and The Pecan Stain & Poly In One, are very similar in color, but they will look slightly different because of the addition of the polyurethane. If you're concerned about how the two will match, I'd recommend testing both colors side by side on a test piece of wood. Have a great day! -Ronald

A:  Hi there, thanks for the question. The Behr Early American looks more similar to the Varathane Early American. Special Walnut has a little bit of a darker undertone. Have a great day! -Ronald

Q:Can a varathane oil based finish be applied (after this product dries of course) as a finishing coat?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Violet, thanks for the question. I wouldn't recommend using an oil-based varathane over the water-based stain, a better option would be to use a water-based varathane or urethane instead. Have a great day! -Ronald

          Worst stain I've ever used.
I make stuff for clients. And Home Depot stop selling the varathane premium stain. So I figured I'd give this a try, because it had the color I needed.... It does not go on evenly or consistently. It does not wipe well with rags. It is absolutely the worst stain I have ever used and now I have to stand and redo my whole project for my client. Not only am I out the cost of the product, but my time having to fix this mess. I do not know how this stain cleared for selling in stores.

Hi Thecrookedcarpenter, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear the Transparent Water-Based Interior Wood Stain did provide an even or uniform finish. This is not the level of performance expected from this stain and certainly not the experience we want for our customers. To fix this, I recommend removing the coating by sanding and ensuring the surface is clean and free of sanding dust. Condition the wood with Behr Interior Water Wood Conditioner B2080, and once dry, recoat with more stain. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Specifically for the White Wash Color
If you have a small project and your goal is to lighten the wood you're working with, I would recommend this product. I've been staining wood for years, usually only with oil-based stains, so I had really low expectations, but this stain surprised me. I had found old edge-banded plywood shelves in the attic of a house I bought so I thought I would try to reuse them. The stain dried really uniformly and changed the color to a beautiful beachy sun-bleached look. Worked out for me.

              Do Not Trust Behr
Do not trust Behr. Their quality sucks. We bought 4 cans of Golden Oak but 1 of the cans is a completely different color as shown in the picture. We did one whole bedroom of one can and started in the second room for which we needed to start the second can. And the second can was a completely different color. We now have no idea what color we are applying to the rest of the floors to continue.

Does not match color on the can
The color on the can and in the guide are an ash brown type wood color with darker gray like lines. This is just a flat gray paint. Not even stain. Worst stain I’ve ever used and very expensive.

Hello, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear your project didn't turn out the way you expected. Our Fast-Drying Water-Based Wood Stain should provide a transparent finish, so that is not typical. To fix the finish and color, it's best to remove the coating by sanding or stripping the surface. Then, condition the bare wood with our Water-Based Wood Conditioner to promote adhesion and uniformity. Once dry, apply thin coats following the recommended spread rate. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our Customer Care team is happy to help! -Lina Behr

Don't use on a large flat surface or anything
I used this on a solid birch door and it was impossible to apply with out getting overlap lines! I don't know if its because it was water based or because it was 30" wide and 7' tall, but it was a nightmare. Did not spread well or evenly. Staining the door frame (pine) was awful also. I had to brush it on and then rub like crazy to get it to spread and try and get it even. Worst stain I have ever used in 50 years!

Hi there, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you had an issue applying our Fast-Frying Water-Based Stain to your door. I can understand you're disappointment since the stain didn't perform as expected. It may be that the stain was drying too fast. When that happens, you can add up to an ounce of water to a quart of stain and it will extend its working time. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Worst water based stain I’ve tried
The only positive thing about this stain is it doesn’t smell terrible. The color is so far off from dark walnut that it could be used as a grey stain. I’m not comparing to the swatch on the can, but the 4 other brands of dark walnut stain which have colors that are mostly interchangeable. This is NOT dark walnut. As for the formulation itself, poor color absorption and very flat, dull result. I did two coats on the board in the photo to get that result. I will not purchase again. Awful.

If you want a stain, get an oil-based one. If you want a wash, get some paint and mix in some water. This stuff is a waste of time and money unless you like stripping and sanding your project twice

Like paint; covers wood grain and makes splotches.
STAY AWAY. Extremely thick compared to your traditional stains. Could go as far to compare it to paint, except paint doesn't wash off with water..... Covered the wood grain even when applied very thinly. Dries matte and feels like I could scratch it off with my nail. Nothing like the picture on the label. They want you to buy the conditioner but I never had to use it before with other stains. A gimmick to get you to spend more apparently. Wiping excess doesn't help either.

Hi Lucas, thank you for your review. Sorry to hear that the stain was thick and covered the wood grain. These results aren't typical, and I can understand your disappointment. If the stain seems too thick, you can add up to an ounce of water to a quart to make it easier to apply a thinner coat and remove the excess stain. I used a Minwax water based stain preconditioner, and got nice even results with this stain. It was easy to apply and control the darkness of the stain by the amount of time left on. I used it on cedar fencing, which I cut to match existing old oak tongue and groove flooring that was used in a piece of 19th century French furniture. It was a fairly close match, although I would have liked a little warmer tint, but this was the closest color available. It did give me the antique look I was going for.

                          Water Based Finishes Rock!
I've used water based poly before but this was my first time using water based stain. It goes on a little different than oil based but once you get used to it you'll love it! You can really control the darkness with time as you need. And the cleanup is (of course) awesome! Highly Recommended.
