Q:Do you recommend this before applying the water based stain + poly? I have a freshly sanded surface that will soak a lot of stain up.

Answer This Question

A:  yes, I had better success using all three. I have an ADU, In law unit that we rent out. the inside walls are some pretty old thick vertical planks not like ship lap either. It was my first time using a water-based so I tested it once i sanded them all down. one board with all 3 and then next to it just stain and ploy and the finished product was maybe not as visually drastic but that could have been also the stain color i choose, but the texture and surface of the wood was far better

by|Nov 3, 2022

A:  Yes. It prepares the wood and cuts down on the wood’s absorption of the stain&poly.

Q:After applying the first coat and sanding, can a second coat be applied if I sand too much? Also should I sand out those dark spots and start with the conditioner again? Will be staining with Bombay Mahogany to match existing legs and sides.

A:  Hi Mark, thanks for the question. If you sanded off too much of the stain. I'd recommend removing all the stain and then reapplying the wood conditioner prior to applying the stain. This will help to make your project look more uniform. Good luck with your project! -Ronald

Great pre-stain wood conditioner! I was really impressed with how well this conditioner helped make the stain very even without any spots or lines, it was also nice that it raised the grain a bit so that I could sand before stain. Once you sand and apply stain you won't have to sand again and potentially ruin the stain! I will be using this on all wood staining projects from here on!

This a a good water based wood conditioner that is easy to use and being water based makes it easy to clean the brush up. needed to build a book shelf stop and a mantle for the fire place and wanted to avoid any dark spots or streaks. the wood conditioner went on easy without any stickiness or clumping and on a 70 degree day dried within 20 minutes. just a light sanding and put two coats of Behr water based stain and poly in one (espresso gloss B6312) . perfect! see the pictures.

First i would like to complement Behr on their shipping methods. This can shows up set into a plastic plate top and bottom and into a tight fitting box. This protects it from denting and other damage and the cans arrived in perfect shape. That said, I have a small woodshop in my basement and any time i have tried to use an oil based finish the fumes will inevitably find their way into the rest of the house - not with this water based finish. There is still a smell, but it is minimal and easily contained to my shop space. I used this in connection with a water based polyurethane from the same company and it worked wonders. Very happy with the product.

The Behr water based pre-stain is a must whenever staining a project. The difference a pre-stain wood conditioner makes with the appearance of a project is incredible. It conditions the wood to allow increased penetration of the stain and prevents blotches and streaking of the stain. overall, creating an even coverage that looks so much better than staining without a conditioner. Over my years of experience woodworking I have learned that the preparation of the wood makes all of the difference in the final appearance of the project. ALWAYS CONDITION YOUR WOOD.

Another great product from Behr , the water based pre- stain conditioner works really well , it pre seals the wood so your stain does not build up in one area drys quickly so it’s leaving you a more uniformed appearance , I like to use a soft cloth to apply but a brush works just as well, the water based helps on clean up and doesn’t leave any strong odor , the final look is very professional

I used the BEHR 1 QT. TRANSPARENT WATER-BASED INTERIOR PRE-STAIN WOOD CONDITIONER, CLEAR when building some bookshelves. I like the water soluble version for easy cleanup - but the stain also needs to be water based. I used a brush to apply it, which worked out well and it seemed to cover evenly. It dried quickly for the stain application. Overall the finish came out nice with no streaks or blotches.

Wow, this stuff did a great job. It will decrease the number of coats needed on my staining jobs. This is a 1qt. water based, clear pre- conditioner. It had no odor. It required hardly any stirring. I applied it on a piece of scrap wood for this review so the quality of the conditioner could be seen. It will help ensure even, and consistent penetration of water based stains. It dries within 20 minutes. Clean up was easy with the water base. I put on 3 coats of stain. I sanded between 2 coats. I could have stopped at 2 coats, but I wanted to see if the scrap piece without the conditioner could get any darker. The stain did a great job with even, consistent penetration of the wood. In the pictures below the left side is pre-treated. First picture is second coat of stain, and the other is third coat of stain.

BEHR 1 qt. Transparent Water-Based Interior Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, Clear If you’re familiar with staining wood for a project, you know that not pre-conditioning the wood surface before staining can result in an uneven color finish that detract from the overall quality and appearance of your work. The Behr water-based pre-stain wood conditioner overcomes that issue. This added step to finishing your project is well worth the time. It applies quickly and evenly, and dries in about an hour. This water-based pre-stain has fewer odors than an oil-based products, and cleans up easily with soap and water. It made the difference on a poplar bookcase I just built.

This Behr water-based pre-stain conditioner is intended to be used before applying Behr water-based stain. I have a couple of projects being built. and my intent is to use this with the associated Behr stain and varnish. I have tried this on some scrap wood followed by the actual stain, using a brush. I had previously used just the stain on a piece of scrap, and side-by-side I am not sure I see the difference. Maybe the pretreat is a bit lighter in color, but it is hard to tell. The instructions recommend finishing the surface with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper before application, but that is going to have to wait until I get a finished assembly.
