Questions & Answers

Can this be used with air paint sprayer if thinned?

Follow-up to my other question.... Is it possible to use this product with an air sprayer if thinned first?
Asked by: Ewen
I used for both brush and airless. I added a small amount of water to the mix as insurance (1/2 c per gallon)...and had no issues with sprayed finish!

What color is it??

Asked by: Gordon
Hi Gordon, Thank you for your question! DECKplus (Deep Tint Base) Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain requires in-store tinting by Home Depot in order to have a color. I recommend visiting your local Home Depot to look over our color options and have the stain tinted. Kind regards, Doris

can you get this in different colors or have color added?

Asked by: Jude
There are many colors available and Home Depot stocks the Behr white base then mixes to whatever color you select using a precise color component measuring system. But be sure to look at the color over wood samples in the store before you purchase. The printed colors don't represent well and never select a color by looking at a computer monitor as the color changes with viewing angle.

Can this be used with a power paint sprayer?

Can this paint be used in a power paint sprayer? For example something like this : http://www.homedepot.com/Paint-Paint-Sprayers/h_d1/N-5yc1vZarv5Z12l2/R-100661562/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051 Or will I need to thin it first?

I bought the solid color "weather proofing" all in one stain and sealer in 6-2014. This product claims a 10 year on decks and 25 years on fences guarantee. I applied the stain over new wood in 6-2014, had to repaint in the summer of 2015 and it is now 8-17 and there is maybe 25% of the deck that isn't pealing or worn through. Worst product I've ever used. See the photos for yourself.

I was careful to apply it as instructed and did thorough deck preparation. I contacted the company and they assured me this isn't the performance they would have expected and will send a replacement gallon. I'll give it another shot and hopefully the performance will be better. I will say that the support I received from Behr was exceptional.

I was attracted to this product a couple of years ago when 1) I decided to stain my deck which hadn't been painted or stained before. 2) Consumer Reports rated it # 1 in stains. So I took a chance and tried it. It was/is great! it lived up to expectations . I would recommend two coats on untreated wood after cleaning and spray washing the wood. The next year one coat and one gallon did the job for a 15' x 15' area. i had never been a Home Depot customer prior to buying this product. Because of the good results in using it, I will continue to make the 32 mile rt drive to shop in the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin store. So bottom line is I would recomend Behr products. Rob Hutchins

I have decking around 2 sides of my house with wood railings and metal balusters around 3 sides. Have already bought 2 - 5 gallon ($300) buckets of this stain. After applying two coats with a weeks worth of drying in between each coat, the stain was really tacky, almost sticky for months after applying. My shoes would stick to it while walking. Have also noticed that the stain is easily scraped off if a plant or something is sitting on it. Spent about 8 weekends staining since we have a lot of deck. Do not even want to think about have to redo this in a couple of years. Behr, if you are listening, you need to reformulate your product because from the reviews it is not holding up very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff I have a 16ft flat trailer. The floor of the trailer is 2×16 pressure treated lumber. This was installed over 20 years ago. I used a Behr product back them on the deck. I am now treating the deck again. Pressure washed first and allow to dry completely. While I may not be worried about a constant color or bleed thru it looks like a new deck. I have hauled everything from cars to fire wood to lumber to job sites. I did add a little sand on second coat for traction during wet conditions. At this rate the metal frame may fail before I have to replace the deck.

I used only a wire brush to get off most of previous stain and discoloration. The new stain, brown, covered beautifully and with just one coat. The thickness of the product is perfect and is so easy to apply. Doesn't drip like most stains though I decided to go ahead and paint my chink since it was getting very discolored. No nasty fumes. Last year I painted a different part of the house and the job held up with no cracking or peeling, despite hot sun in Summer and lots of wet snow in the Winter. Clean up was easy.

I bought this in 2015 and I power washed my deck about 5 days before I was going to use the stain. It went on good and I was pleased. BUT after 1 winter it was peeling off and there is no scraping on my deck the snow just melts away. This is the second year and it is worse, I will have to re-stain it again. I am a single woman with some health issues and so this is not something I'm looking forward to doing again. I have always used BEHR paint and loved it, but very disappointed with this, I saw some bad reviews and should have heeded them.

As another reviewer has indicated, I would also suggest using a 3/4" nap roller for older decks/docks with warped or cupped flooring boards. This puts down more stain, but the coverage is better and quicker.
