I'm using this the paint cabinets. I used a primer and the paint when on very "sticky" then when trying to blend it lifted of in placed that I had painted that were still wet!! It was a complete mess. Going to start over... How do I restart!? What did I do wrong??
Asked by: ineedHELP
Sorry about your poor painting experience, but don't feel too bad because every one of us has had a least one major "paint fail" during our lifetimes. Existing cabinets must be washed down thoroughly with TSP before even using a primer. Cabinets are commonly coated with a virtually invisible oily film from regular kitchen use. A TSP wash doesn't take that long and helps assure a clean surface. Then, after a thorough dry overnight (I usually put a small fan on the floor of the room where the cabinets are drying) you're almost ready to paint. Whether or not you choose to use a primer is up to you. I prefer to skip the separate primer these days in favor of a very light sand (220) to barely etch the surface, and then using the top of the line paint/prime product from any leading brand. I've had too many instances where the "one coat coverage" promise didn't fully materialize and two coats were actually required. In summary, four steps for me, warm TSP/warm water wipe down followed by a thorough dry, light but thorough surface etch using #220 or equivalent liquid product, finally two coats of top of the line paint/primer with thorough overnight dry in between. There is also special cabinet paint that you can acquire from specialty paint stores that is outstanding, although expensive. Big box stores also have cabinet paint but the quality can be hit and miss from my experience. Most painting "fails" fall into three categories, failure to properly prepare to do the job (applying paint is only around half the labor); getting in a hurry with the application or drying processes; and poor selection of paint and other application materials. Good luck with your repaint. I suggest you remove all paint/primer you can and return to step one. The best news is you'll never have to learn this lesson again! HEY HOME DEPOT...WE NEED YOUR HELP IN PUSHING BACK ON THE PAINT MANUFACTURERS REGARDING THE SIZE OF PRINT ON THE BACK OF THE CANS, INCLUDING THE INSTRUCTIONS. THEY ARE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO READ THESE DAYS. Maybe the front label becomes a third of the paper, and the back side becomes two thirds, but in any even the instructions are critical. That's why I didn't suggest to this guy that he read the label and follow instructions...because it is often impossible!

If i were to use this as a primer without adding a color to it, what would be the best blend (ultra pure white, medium base etc) to cover dark walls?

How much wall can this cover?
Asked by: Sam
Hi Sam, thank you for your question. Each gallon of Marquee paint covers about 250-400 square feet. A 5-gallon bucket should cover about 1250-2000 square feet. Keep in mind that the spread rate may be impacted by your surface's porosity, as more porous surfaces soak in more paint. Good luck with your project, and happy painting! -Joanna

What do I need to do if I have walls that have only been painted by flat builder paint?

I have a problem with sheen being different even with mutiple coats.
Asked by: Lisa
Hi Lisa, thank you for contacting us with your question. Our Interior Marquee paint has a built-in stain blocking primer. The primer in the paint helps seal not only stains but your surface's porosity as well, allowing for a more uniform application. Before painting, I'd recommend removing any loose coating, cleaning your surface, and allowing it to fully dry. I hope this info helps. Good luck with your project and happy painting! -Joanna

1 gal. #MQ2-55 Park Avenue One-Coat Hide Satin Enamel Interior Paint is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 475.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad experience with Marquee I bought this paint at the suggestion of the Home Depot Associate, I had seen the color online, it was the first color I saw and I actually knew it was what my wife was looking for the bathrooms. The color "Purple Gladiola" is beautiful. My only issues were sometimes as I was "cutting" in the corners and around trim with a brush the paint seemed to peel up as a touched it with my brush trying to cut everything in. I noticed the same thing when I began to roll the walls, so it was a little aggravating. After allowing it to dry over night I went back and saw spots I had to repaint due to the prior color showing through. My paint was pretty thick in the can, maybe the associate did not mix it properly or shake it well enough, I don't know. I think next time I would buy another line of Behr, I have never had any issues with others. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

After my poor experience using the Marquee Semigloss (see previous review), the Behr customer service representative and I spoke about how super glossy it was. He advised me to switch to the Satin Marquee for the rest of the project. The Semigloss seemed excessively glossy, so he recommended the Satin instead, which was expected to be glossier than a true Satin. Instead, it is a true Satin, so I now have a big gloss difference between the areas that were painted with the Semigloss and the Satin. Otherwise, this paint also required 2 or more coats to cover areas that the Behr Ultra was able to cover with a single coat. I compared this new can of paint with a 2 year old can of Marquee, and it is definitely not as good. The older can was also able to cover with only a single coat. I wonder if the current formulation isn't as good as the older Marquee or the older Ultra?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cabinets look great! We used this paint to refinish out kitchen cabinets. It looks great and covered easily. I'm ready for my next project! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very satisfied I used Behr Marquee in a seafoam color (not sure if this is the formal name) in two rooms...one was a very dark terracotta color and the other was actually a VERY knotty pine room. I did have to prime over the pine room knowing that knots would come through eventually, but I would have done that first with any paint I used. Both rooms look gorgeous...with only one coat to each. This was done on a house we were renovating to put on the market (my mom's)...and eventually we will be looking for a new home for us and I absolutely plan to use this paint (maybe even the same color) when we do! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glorious! This may in fact be better than sliced bread! We just closed on our house last week. What a nightmare!!!!! The paint they had was so cheap and poorly done. It was everywhere!!! Lines and paint marks everywhere! We purchased the Behr Marquee with our fingers crossed that it was as good as it says it is! I went in thinking well it's got to be better than what is there now. Well, I am a walking pallet of Behr Satin Enamel right now and I could not be happier! This paint is AMAZING! It legitimately covered over everything I have painted in the house so far. This includes hideous reds, yellows, greens. Oh did I mention the house was 2,284 square feet and there are only 2 of us painting? It also has popcorn ceilings... (a whole different awesome review I need to leave on the Behr Ceiling paint) If I could kiss the person who has formulated this paint, I would. Thank you guys so much for making such a fabulous paint! From Salem, CT we Love your products!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Streaks! I have used Behr paints in the past and never had a problem until I recently painted a white wall with a light tan color. After painting the small wall, I could see light streaks running through it. The next morning, I painted again and still had streaks. I painted a third time and the streaks were gone. I had to use almost an entire gallon of paint for a 9 x 6 wall. I’ve painted many walls and never had this happen. Almost afraid to do the rest of the room after this experience. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Paint You really cannot Behr for quality and value. I had some fear about not doing a primer on a bright purple room that we were painting a pale green. But two coats of this totally covered up all the purple. Application was nice--I used a more expensive brand in another part of the house and it left all kinds of weird streaks. I like satin because it's good a hiding imperfections but is also easy to clean. I am using this paint in a nursery so that was important to me. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as advertised Purchased Behr Marquee to paint a living room. The one coat coverage never materialized. In fact some places needed 3 coats. We were painting over Behr paint. Called Behr and they gave us a second gallon of paint. I found the paint, both gallons, to be very watery. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
