I need to paint a wall white that's already been pre painted dark brown do i need a first coat of primer?

The wall has designs colored in dark brown. I know this product has primer in in but i need to know if it's recommended to use a bucket of primer by it self first or can i achieve same result by using this product by it self?
Asked by: Elgin
Yes, of course. Even though the good quality Behr paints are "self-priming", (the Premium, the Ultra, and the Marquee), you should use a primer first because plain white has very little hiding ability. (I am a Painting Contractor). If your color of choice was like 'antique white' or beige, then it probably would cover with no primer, but you should do a test first in a little 1-foot wide spot. Primer is cheaper than the paint, and dries quicker, and it evens out the uneven surfaces like the artwork you described. That's why you use primer separate from topcoat paint, even though the paint is called "self-priming". That just means it sticks easily.

5 gal. Ultra Pure White Satin Enamel Exterior Paint and Primer in One is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 35735.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible paint peels off while painting on! This paint is the worst!! We got a gallon for our walls and a gallon for the cabinets. It was okay on the walls although it peeled right off the edges when we tried to pull the tape off the edges. So lots of touch up. But the paint for the cabinets was absolutely horrible!!! I have refinished 4 sets of bathroom cabinets and my entire kitchen cabinets so I know what I’m doing. I sanded and primed my entire bathroom vanity. I used this paint bc it’s what was recommended by the woman working at the paint counter. Didn’t love it for the walls but absolutely despised it for cabinets. It actually ruined my cabinets and I now have to sand it all off and start from scratch. As soon as I brushed the paint on and went over it again the paint came right off. It clumped and just was horrible. I will never use this paint again. Love the regular old behr paint. This one is the worst!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is the last time I will use a Behr... This is the last time I will use a Behr product. I just moved in to a fairly large apartment. I'm on a budget and the cost of a premium name paint seemed too much for all the coverage needed. I cleaned all the surfaces (ceiling, walls and woodwork) prior to painting. I bought the best rollers and brushes, and I've painted for years. I thoroughly stirred all the paints I used. I was painting over white paint that was 5 years old. The ceilings took 2 coats in each of the 7 rooms because it looked splotchy. The yellow took 3 coats the other colors all took at least 2 coats, sometimes 3. The first coat is like watered down milk paint. The last ingredient on Behr's list has to be pigment! The paint also has a weird consistency where it tends to form a separate skin over the previous wall and not rip into the wall. The time wasted plus all the extra gallon of paint show me how economical Sherwin Williams an Benjamin Moore really are in the long run. Home depot is convenient- that's about it.

I painted my whole house with it 10 years ago without problems except it was a little runny so I had to be more careful. I had a contractor remodel a 6x12 mud/laundry room, some new dry wall and texture was involved. He sprayed 3 coats and it was still uneven. I thought it was his technique, so I bought another gallon and rolled it. It is not better. 4 gallons on on small room?!!!? Paint and Primer in one? I don't think so! I used a satin sheen for cleanability. Some areas are shiny and some are dull. I went over it, kept a wet working edge, rolled and rolled. I am so annoyed. I wasted most of a day off and have spent $$ and room is still not done. Add to this my recent bad patio furniture online purchase from Home Depot, and I am about fed up with Home Depot. They have been my go-to store for years. I am switching paint brands.

I purchased the Behr Premium Plus Ultra and had it tinted to match some new vinyl siding that I had recently installed. We installed new siding on the front and painted the rest of the white siding on the house. I used the $169.00 airless paint sprayer from The Harbour Freight. This was my first time using a sprayer to paint with. I used this paint unthinned with a .015 tip. This was the easiest painting that I have ever done. The paint covered in one coat. It looks AWESOME! You can't tell where the new siding stops and the paint starts. Home Depot color match is right on the money. AND I got a $40.00 rebate on the paint! This will be my paint of choice from now on.

Used Behr Premium Plus Flat for living room walls and couldn't be happier. No problem with application. Cut out with brush and rolled the walls, all dried to match. Used less than expected. Tried Behr Hi Gloss for the trim, and it did not work at all. Paint came off plaster trim whenever I went back over it. Took it back to Home Depot and associate suggested it was the brush, but he also offered to exchange for satin finish, which I did. The satin finish went on no problem and looks great. Was probably a better choice to begin with. I was skeptical about using Behr after reading some of the reviews that said it was thick and rolled on differently than others. But I had no problem cutting out and rolling the walls with the flat. Once I exchanged the hi-gloss for satin on the trim, I was very happy with it as well. I have no problem recommending this paint.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I've been a professional painting contractor for 27 years. ... I've been a professional painting contractor for 27 years. We've used every paint imaginable. The best we've used recently is Benjamin Moore's Regal Select and Aura. The worst we've used is Behr Marquee. The reasons are the following: Doesn't cover well - 3 coats required for full coverage. Doesn't set up well - sags and runs due to slow dry time. Occasionally a client will furnish their own paint and we'll have an opportunity to try one we haven't tried in a while. Once again, I was disappointed with Behr paint. I can't believe Consumer Reports rated it #1. Something funny going on there. This is how I would rank the paints we use in the San Francisco Bay Area. Benjamin Moore's premium paints #1, Sherwin William's premium paints #2 (stay away from anything other than there premium paints - they're poor quality), Kelly Moore's premium paints, Dunn Edwards' premium paints, ICI's premium paints, and way down the list at last place is Behr paint. I hope this helps you.

It doesn't cover in one coat as all good paint should. I painted a light color (Salt Cellar) over a white wall and when it dried, you can see some areas that weren't covered evenly. I tried spraying and rollers with the same result. Customers shouldn't have to put on 2 coats to cover previous paint as a rule. They also shouldn't have to choose from and Behr shouldn't need to have 3 levels of paint. If da Vinci and Michael Angelo didn't have to choose from 3 levels of quality paint 500 hundred years ago, I don't see why we should have to today. All of them should cover in one coat-- especially a white wall. Paint should paint. I don't know if it’s the fact that they mix primer in the paint but if so, I prefer the way it was before--- just solid paint. I can buy Kilz primer and to prime and then get regular paint which would be less expensive than buying 2 gallons of this paint for 2 coats. So, it may be that the experiment of mixing primer with paint just didn't work and the manufacturer doesn't want to admit it. I am going to try some of the good brands from paint stores instead.

I have been painting for years and this is the 1st time I have had an issue like this...The paint was drying almost immediately. When cutting in around molding and corners, I had to paint very quickly and could not go back and touch up any spots until the paint was completely dry, otherwise it would clump up and pull the 1st coat off of the wall. I attempted to roll one wall and the paint was going on very thick. Within minutes the paint was drying and at the same time dripping/sagging down the wall. I could not go back and try to fix it or re-roll the area because it would just pull the existing coat off of the wall and make it even worse, I am attaching pictures to show the result. I have had to scrape/sand/spackle the entire wall and repaint. I will never purchase any Behr products again...what a waste of time and money.

The interior painting is almost finished. The painters have had to paint many of the walls not one, two, or three times, but four. Finally, the other day as I purchased almost the last gallons, one of the Home Depot paint staff told me that the ONLY way the one coat guarantee applied was if it was an original Behr color, not a color from another paint company. It would have been nice to know that NUMEROUS coats and MEGABUCKS ago. We are not the least bit impressed with Behr and, in fact, are purchasing our exterior paint from another manufacturer. VERY, VERY disappointing! Both in the coverage quality and in the fact that Home Depot employees knew all along that we were using another company's color and never told us the guarantee was invalid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not fade!! I started painting the front of my house in July of 2014. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to stop painting just half-way up. I was not able to commence painting until July of 2015. One year later, using the same gallon of paint, I went up on scaffolding to continue the work. My house faces south and after an entire year of having harsh Indiana sunlight beating onto this rather rich bright paint, I fully anticipated there to be a notable difference in coloration. There isn't. Any. None. Zip. Zero. You cannot tell from one board to another where the 2014 work ended and the 2015 work began. We (my grateful neighbors and I) are astounded. I am under 5'4" and over 50 years old - I am buying single gallons to complete the work as I am not about to contend with a 5 gallon bucket. I am very happy to report that the second gallon, used to finish the remaining section of the front of the house also perfectly matches the previous paint color. My house is almost 100 years old and has original cedar siding.

Great on trim. The problem I had was on doors it is too thick and several doors no longer close correctly. I used a small roller and did not put it on heavy so this was a pain. I did not paint the hinges. Maybe being an older house this was just the coat that did them in. I spent way too much time adjusting all effected hinges with good success. So the doors close. I had tried a satin finish but just didn't give a smooth cleanable finish. Great paint just be careful on doors

He applied the paint with a roller (color Egyptian Pyramid which is "tan") over hardiboard that was yellow. He chose the semi-gloss. Worked beautifully with only one coat. Trim was done in Behr recommended trim color of Moroccan Cream. My husband had cleaned the surfaces prior to painting with TSP mixture from a spray bottle. He chose not to do the usual "power washing" as he thought it would be to rough on the existing siding and trim. Looks better than if we had hired a professional. Would recommend that one look up Behr's recommendations on trim colors as not all shades of "white" or "cream" coordinate the same way with the all-over siding one selects. A long time ago, my husband painted our home using the spray method (and covering the windows in plastic). He found it more effort and applied paint too thinly. Plus a hassle to clean up. Also, he figured the paint buckets are so inexpensive, best to simply throw out after use. Also, instead of using a ladder, my husband built a scaffold with 2 x 4's and a piece of siding. Also, had a roller extension piece for when needed.

We used the semi-gloss paint to remodel some brick-work on the fire place and an accent wall. Surprisingly the fireplace was completed with one coat and a thick nap roller. The original color was a “yellow adobe” and the lighter gray covered it exceedingly well. The other bricks are part of an accent wall and were originally a reddish brown which required two coats to do the job.

I usually purchase the Ultra and decided to try the Marquee. I brought the paint home, stirred it and began cutting in around trim and doors. I stirred it and poured it into paint tray and used the roller the associate at Home Depot had told me I should use. I rolled the paint on the two walls and by the time I finished the second wall I noticed the paint was running. I’ve never had this problem from paint. I used my brush and roller trying to smooth out the runs and sags. After it had dried, it looked awful!! Anywhere I had brushed on the paint was a completely different shade than what was rolled on. The brush was new as well as the roller. The walls were clean and no residue of any kind. The paint had been stirred often. I took the paint back and the same associate said the paint seemed thin and refunded my money. She then mixed up a can of the Ultra in same shade. The only other time I used the Marquee it did the exact same thing. I do NOT recommend this line of Behr paint. The associate told me she would have the Behr rep look at the paint himself. She was nice and very helpful. However, I will never buy the Marquee again.

Covered it in one coat but I applied two anyway. Paint has very little odor if any and dried within a few hours. Didn't splatter much using roller. Don't apply to thick it will run.. The is very good covering all kinds of marks or stains on wall. The paint is easy to wipe off marks and last a very long time inside a humid bathroom without getting moldy.

We recently painted our home with over 14 gallons of Behr Marquee paint in Semi-Gloss and Satin. I really liked the consistency of the paint and the smooth way in which it laid down. It dried quickly - but not too quickly - and survived our friends helping us move in after only 2 days of drying with hardly any touch up needed. If you've scuffed up against new paint you'll understand how great it was to have the paint be so durable so quickly. The negatives - it does drip. This is a heavier paint which probably helps it coat well but it can begin to drag down your wall after 10 minutes or so. We found it helped to review each section after 10 minutes to catch any drips that had formed. The other negative, which didn't really surprise me, was that it was NOT 1 coat. Even the packaging says you will need more than one coat for durability, but beware it will not cover completely with one coat. As a result, we had to spend over $200 more in additional gallons of paint. It did a great job of covering the previous home owners very bright color palette but required 2 coats throughout and an occasional touch up with a third coat. Nevertheless, I would recommend this paint as a great choice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I Wanted to Love it We bought five gallons of this ultra pure white in semi gloss marquee for our new home. The main reason i chose the marquee was because they boasted one coat coverage, so for the extra 10 bucks a gallon I decided to take a chance. The paint had a fine consistency and low odor compared to other paints I’ve used, however i used this to paint over a pale yellow, a bright blue and an off white and all three required two coats plus additional touch ups. We trimmed with a wooster pro nylon brush and then rolled the walls with a 9” wooster pro roller. It is my opinion that if you are looking to purchase interior paint, i would save the ten dollars a gallon and get the behr premium plus ultra. In my experience it covers the same and as ive mentioned is quite a bit cheaper than the marquee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a Two-Coater The paint goes on smooth, easy clean up. I used the white on ceiling and colors on the wall. I had a gray color to use in the basement, but after putting it on the walls, I didn't like the color. Thought it might be the lights we were using, so changed them out, it looks better. It's still not the color that I saw under the lights at the store from paint sample. Will use a different color gray for the bathroom. I would recommend using two coats. We are rebuilding after a flood so it's all new construction. We textured all the walls and ceilings with a small size "bump". I feel there is better protection with two coats. And with textured walls, you can still find "white" dots on the wall where I missed with the first coat of paint coverage. Painters tape doesn't like to stick to the textured painted walls either. The yellow frog tape wouldn't stick, or stick for very long, about 2 minutes then fall off. Just thought I would give a heads up on that one. All in All, it's a good quality paint.

I primed the walls first then had to apply 2 coats to get complete coverage. Went back and asked about guarantee and they told the Kilz premier primer wasn't any good (bad primer) and that was why the one coat did not work. Told me I had to use Zinsser primer which I bought and put two coats on each wall in the next room but still had to apply two coats of the Marquee paint to get coverage, but still have several areas that have a different sheen so I will apply more paint when I get a chance. I believe the Kilz primer was better and that I wasted a lot of money on this paint. I would not recommend it to anyone. The one coat guarantee is not honored by the store.
