Questions & Answers

Does your semi-transparent stain work well for outdoor stairs (they will be new)? If so, does it matter what color I choose? How long will it last before having to be redone?
ByAug 11, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hi Mike, thank you for your question. The Semi-Transparent Wood Stain and Sealer can be used on new wooden stairs in the color of your choice. To prep the wood, use the All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 and allow it to dry completely. The stain is guaranteed 6 years on decks, which would be similar to stairs. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Will The Husky Paint Gun Sprayer (Model # HDK00600SG ) TIP 1.4mm work for this wood sealer?
          ByAug 7, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Hi Fabian, thanks for reaching out with your question. It looks like the Husky Paint Gun Sprayer (Model # HDK00600SG) is an HVLP Sprayer. Unfortunately, we do not recommend using an HVLP sprayer with any of our products, as they are thicker and heavier than what's recommended for this type of sprayer. Using our products with this sprayer can clog the sprayer tip or create an uneven spray. Instead, you may apply our coating using an airless sprayer with a .015-.019 tip and a 60 mesh filter. Have a great day! -Angie

What is the difference between this product and Behr Advanced Deckover Paint?
            ByAug 3, 2026
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hi PostInstaller, thanks for the question. Our Advanced Deckover is a much thicker product, That will fill cracks and seal in splinters on the wood. The Solid-Color Waterproofing Stain is Sealer is a thinner coating that is more for newer wood or composite decks, and it has a 10-year warranty on Decks. If you have additional questions about your project, please reach out to us directly. Our customer care team is happy to help. -Ronald

              Answer This Question

Hi Postinstaller, thanks for the question. Our Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer isn't recommended on composite decking. Instead, I'd suggest using our Solid-Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer. If you have additional questions about your project, please reach out to us directly. Do I need to wait for full cure before putting chairs on the deck, even if we don’t sit on it? What can not be done before the 72 hours?

                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Hi Gabriela, thank you for your question. We recommend waiting the 72 hours before placing any furniture on the surface to ensure the coating can completely dry properly. Placing furniture on the surface, even if not being used, may lead to the coating remaining soft on the points of contact, which can impact the performance or disrupt the stain. To avoid touch-ups or a recoat, it's best to wait the recommended time. Have a great day! -Adelina

I have used this line up of Behr product for at least 8 yrs. I have a log house that I used the semi transparent cedar tone on 8 yrs ago. It is now showing signs of needing redone in another year or two. Last year I did a chicken coup with same product. The clear I just applied on some cedar decking. I also applied to the porch ceiling. The product is very easy to brush or roll on. I have also have ran it thru a airless sprayer. Product clean up is water based so it is very easy. The price seems to be inline with other brands. Durability seems to be pretty accurate as labeled on can. I am in michigan so I do not get the extreme sun that other areas of the country would. It dries quickly and did require at least 2 coats.

                  High quality, high cost
Very good product. However it is one of the most expensive stains out there. I wish HD offered it in 5 gallons. They’re out of stock, forcing me to buy several individual gallons which is expensive. I’m going to need over 7 gallons total to finish my fence. It does appear pretty orange at first, but I don’t mind bc I know stains fade over time, so it will likely hold up pretty well.

I used this paint for my wooden fence around my back yard. The fence was about 6 years old already and was beginning to show age from the elements. This paint exceeded my expectations. Really made the fence look brand new. Gives it a nice seal and smooth finish. Highly recommended.

                    Poor Results
I bought and used the Behr Stain and Sealer a year ago. It had good reviews. I used it on two cedar 2 x 4 decks. The first deck was an older cedar deck. I replaced 50 % of the deck with new cedar boards. Deck 2 consisted of all new cedar 2 x 4's. Even though the cedar was all kiln dried I waited several weeks and a long dry period before putting down the Behr Stain. I did not use primer as the Behr is sold as a Stain and Primer. After one year both decks have extensive peeling on all the new cedar decking. I will have to sand and redo both decks.

Looks great and keeps the water out of the wood. Recommend the chocolate color!

                      Didn't even last a season!
I used this product on both of my decks. I followed the prep instructions to the letter, as it was a huge area and I certainly didnt want to have to do it again sooner than planned. It didn't even last a season! I used it on my pool deck, where it peeled, so I thought maybe the pool water caused something. Not the case, the other deck, no pool, only a grill, is also peeling. So aggravating. I will never use a Behr product again.
