I found a blog post where this was used on stairs inside. Is this okay? Or should we not do this?

Asked by Stairs May 2, 2021

Answer

Hi Stairs, Thank you for writing in. As it turns out, we don't recommend applying exterior coatings indoors. Interior coatings typically dry to a harder finish, making it easier for them to withstand routine cleaning and scrubbing. While an exterior product is a strong coating, it is not made to resist this type of washing and can lead to early discoloration. Instead, I recommend looking into Behr Porch & Patio Floor Paint for indoor stairs. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions you may have. Best of luck with your project! ~Doris

Hi, Can this product be used over composite decking... Thanks

Asked by Kevin August 13, 2020

Answer

Hi Kevin, thank you for your interest in our products and for reaching out. Yes, our Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer can be used over composite decking. Before staining, we'd recommend removing any loose coating on the decking, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, and allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours (48 hours of dry time is recommended if using a pressure washer). We hope this information helps. Happy staining, and best of luck with your project. Have a great day. -Joanna

Complete disappointment!
A picture is worth a thousand words. I purchased Behr Cape Code Grey Semi-Transparent Penetrating Oil-Based Exterior Waterproofing Wood Stain on June 24, 2019 and waited for the appropriate temp to be able to apply. I applied a very light coat using cloth rather than a brush as I wanted a light transparent look. I state this as someone will say I applied too thick … not so. I applied a second coat a few days later in the same manner. Also, temperatures were within application guidelines in June 2019. One year later the highly touted Behr is a mess … peeling down to the wood in some places and bubbling up in others. I took the advice of the Home Depot associate to use this Behr stain over other brands. I had hoped this stain would last at least 2-3 years as promised by the store associate. I will now need to sand and find another semi-transparent stain that will hopefully fill the bill. In case it goes unnoticed, deck stain is not an economically priced item. I will again have to do my homework to determine which stain is best suited for my deck, something that I do not relish doing.

Hi LSCILLINI - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and peeling on your deck, especially so soon. To fix, it's best to remove the stain, prepare the surface with our wood cleaner, then apply 2 new thin coats with a pad applicator to ensure a long-lasting finish. For further assistance with your project, please feel free to reach out to us directly. - Sara Behr
Very light in color
The sample swatch was beautiful as well as the color in the can. A nice grey. I am currently on day 3 of staining my 12x12 deck (spending 6-8 hours each day) because it goes on very light. Imagine painting with Elmer's glue. It's that light in color. I had to do heavier coats and will probably have to get a 2nd can to do a 2nd coat. I wished that I would have gotten the solid color of this.

Im sure the stain itself is fine. However the color is nearly white. I was told that this would be a darker grey. And when i looked at the samples it was pretty dark. Not sure if someone mixed it wrong or what, but i wasted 170 dollars. The picture i attached is after 2 coats.

Hi Scotty,
Thanks for taking the time to review our stain. I'm sorry to hear about the color not coming out as expected. That's definitely odd, especially if you tried a sample and liked how it came out. If you'd like, feel free to reach out directly to our Customer Care Department for any questions or assistance with your project. Have a good rest of your day, and thanks again for your feedback - Vince Behr
Just Ok
I used 2 coats and the initial look and color was great. The problem is that this stain does not repel dirt at all. After the first Fall season, leaves and debris stains left the deck just awful looking. Same thing in the spring and it needs to be scrubbed or power washed off, will not rinse away with hose. Also a few small spots have chipped away requiring touch up. Have never had this issue with other stains. Will be looking for another brand.

Response from BehrJun 24, 2019
Hi mich233,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about the stains and chipping on your deck! To remove the stains, I recommend cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Once the stains are removed, the chipped areas can be lightly sanded down, cleaned, and touched up with more stain. For further assistance with your project, please feel free to reach out to us directly. - Sara Behr

Solid color with SOLID results
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My Tennessee lake house is 15 years old w original stain. It gets extreme heat, direct sun and sideways rain so, the wood was in desperate need of new stain. The Behr solid stain- pewter went on smoothly and was highly absorbed by the wood. I used 18 gallons. It didn't build up on the grains & allowed to show through. It dried quickly allowing additional application the next day. With a color change use 2 coats for best results, even finish. All of my neighbors are asking what I used BC they had recent painting without the same results!

Transparent
I purchased this for use on pressure treated lumber. It looks grey in the can (yes, thoroughly stirred), but it is absolutely transparent on the wood. You can't even tell whether you've applied it properly or evenly. For $40, it should at least provide some kind of color or coverage. It is "stain" and sealer, after all. Useless product, waste of cash. Will not buy again and would not recommend.

Response from BehrJun 4, 2021
Hello JL, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the stain looks transparent and without any color. Our semi-transparent stain should have some noticeable color though it won't fully cover the wood color or wood grain. Since stirring didn't resolve the issue, it's best to remove the coating, clean the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner and reapply the stain using a new container. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance with this. Our team is happy to help you! -Joni Behr

The only problem is that when applying the stain you cannot overlap the strokes, it leaves a big difference in the color. Now I have to apply a second coat to the entire deck.
