Hi Nana - Thank you for your question. If your deck is in good condition, we recommend checking out our Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer for your project. It will protect the surface from the outside elements for up to 10 years on deck floors and 25 years on vertical surfaces (https://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-gal-SC-102-Slate-Solid-Color-Waterproofing-Exterior-Wood-Stain-and-Sealer-501301/204166088). will this paint stay on a wood deck that does not get any sun?

Asked by Nana June 30, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Nana - Thank you for your question. This product will adhere to a wood deck that does not get sun exposure. To ensure the best adhesion, we recommend sanding any loose wood fibers/fuzz from the boards, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, and allowing the surface to completely dry before applying 2 coats of Advanced DeckOver at the recommended spread rate. Good luck with your project! - Sara

Can this product be thinned to paint on easier

Asked by Kay April 30, 2020

Answer

Hi Kay, Thank you for writing in. As it turns out, DeckOver cannot be thinned. I'm very sorry to hear about the application issue you've run into. DeckOver is supposed to be thick and feel like creamy peanut butter, but should still be quite easy to spread. If your DeckOver feels thicker than I just described, please contact us directly so we can assist you. Kindest regards, Doris

Waste of money and time
Please do not allow a sales associate to push this product on you. Let someone who actually has used it tell you about it. First off, it sets and drys so fast while you are rolling it on, now wonder I see all the complaints on it peeling. It does not soak into the wood, the product basically drys and configures to itself. I got this crap on my hands after a few hours of working, bam it comes right off, meaning it didn't even stick to my hands. I replaced a lot of 1x4 planks and sanded the deck. So I preped really good. I was tired of stains that never matched or still let sun damage in, so I thought this would be great. Why on earth is this product on the market, it's basically chemicals on a can and they know it's garbage. I added a photo to prove I just used it. I guarantee this will peel in a few months.

Hello Junk, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the paint was drying so fast and didn't soak in as you expected. Our DeckOver is a water-based solid color coating and won't fully soak into the wood like a typical oil-based stain might. If the coating left a texture because it was drying too fast, I recommend lightly sanding it smooth, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating as needed. If the coating is still drying too fast, you can thin it with up to 4 ounces of water per gallon to help extend the working time. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team again for further assistance with this. Im finally selling my house and now i am scraping it to rekease the moisture under the paint that did adhere. Do NOT buy this product. You will ruin your deck! Wasted so much money.

Hi DawnStevenson - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to her that the finish bubbled and comes off easily! To fix the finish, I recommend removing anything that's loose, sanding down any harsh edges to a smooth finish, cleaning the surface with our wood cleaner, then applying 2 new coats at the recommended spread rate for a uniform finish. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can assist you with this further. We hope to hear from you! - Sara Behr
DO NOT BUY SLATE COLOR!!!! Its horrid!
I was going to stay with gray, and I looked at the colors and chose the slate. After all, it was listed one of the most popular. I spent hours covering my two tier deck. I prepped it. I cleaned it. And then I painted it. Seven gallons of black slate. Blood, sweat, pain, three days, two decks, mass of railing. It was completed, it was gorgous. Days went by and I let my dogs outside.....and a month later I am still crying. It is horrid. It looks dirty ALL the time. Everytime the puppies walk, mass amount of horrid dirty smears across my days of useless labor. Its actually so bad, I am going to have to re-do it. Hundreds of dollars later, for a gross filthy looking deck. Home Depot you should chose the colors you promote a littlle better. Or warn about the problems with pets! Look at this mess you caused me!!!! I can just cry everytime I look at it.

I wouldn’t use it
I have been dealing with peeling and blistering for a few years. I can’t clean anything off the surface. I will sand my whole deck to remove this product and go back to stain

Response from Doris, Behr Customer CareJun 3, 2021
Hi Bob,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm very sorry to hear ab out the bubbling and peeling issues experineced, as that's not what we want our customers to go through. I understand how disappointing this must be, and I want to help.

The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder. Home Depot usually has great rental options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. If there are DeckOver remnants left, they can be topcoated with a solid color wood stain.

I've emailed you directly to follow up and I look forward to assisting you.

Kindest regards,

Doris

The color looks like chalky glue. Isn’t it supposed to look like wood grain?

Horrible finish between cracks
I spent an entire weekend working on my deck. Wish I would have been playing with the kids instead. Prepped exactly as recommended. I rolled on 2 coats as instructed with coverage rate similar to recommended ( about 75 sq feet/gallon). Used a half inch nap. Ended up with ugly connecting pieces of paint between deck boards all over the deck. Went through 6.5 gallons between the deck and the spindles. Not sure what to do now, as cutting through these pieces with a knife does not really make them look any better. Huge waste of time and money unless behr can come up with a good solution.

Response from Sara, Behr Customer CareMay 24, 2021
Hi Kevin44 - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the connecting pieces in between your boards! Typically, if you notice any connecting areas while the DeckOver is still wet, it's best to run a brush in between the boards to remove the excess product. If you need to remove these areas after the DeckOver has completely dried, we recommend using a utility tool or knife to cut through them. I've also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and assist you with this further. Thank you again for submitting a review, and I hope to hear back from you! - Sara
advanced deckOver
after 1 year my deck is peeling and and strips of the paint are coming up. followed instructions and even added a 2nd coat as recommended by home depot, do not recommend this product

Response from BehrMay 18, 2021
Hi tjs, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the coating is peeling so soon. Our DeckOver does recommend two coats at the correct spread rate. I recommend removing the loose coating, cleaning the surface, and recoating as needed. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Giovanna Behr
Way too thick to apply with roller or brush
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought two 5-gallon buckets of Behr Premium Advanced Deckover. The consistency of the deckover was similar to thick tar. Both buckets were like this. Using a roller was fruitless - the roller would just roll over the surface and not pick up any deckover. The bristles on a brush would bend rather than penetrate the surface to pick up some deckover. Only a putty knife can get any deckover... just imagine how long it would take to finish a deck using a putty knife...

Response from Sara, Behr Customer CareMay 14, 2021
Hi Magnus - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble applying our Advanced DeckOver! This product should have a very thick consistency but should still flow smoothly from a stir stick once the DeckOver has been mixed for a few minutes. Instead of working from a paint tray, I recommend attaching a paint grid to your buckets. This will allow you to dip your roller into the product (and roll off any excess onto the grid) to ensure you have enough product on the roller. I've also reached out to you via email to assist you with this further. Thanks again for submitting a review, and I look forward to helping you get your project back on track. - Sara
Terrible Product!
I read all the reviews beforehand and what I learned was preparation was key. Spring of 2019 I power washed, used a deck cleaner and rented a sander and sanded the whole 16 x 20 deck. 5 days it took from prep to dry. Applied 2 coats and the next spring, it's bubbling up and peeling like old wallpaper. I worked so hard on this deck for this to happen. Will not use any Behr products again and I tell my friends to not use this brand as well. Pictures are attached - Rainy day in Ohio.

Response from Sara, Behr Customer CareMay 6, 2021
Hi Mudda - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and peeling on your deck, especially after the work that went into your project! To fix the finish, I recommend removing the loose DeckOver, cleaning the bare spots with our wood cleaner, then touching up (or applying 2 new coats if this is happening to most of the surface). I've also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and make this right. Thanks again for taking the time to write a review, and I hope to hear back from you. - Sara
Peeling/Chipping
This deck paint is great until it isn’t. After a year or so, It starts to peel and chip. You wouldn’t think it’s a big deal is kind of a high traffic area so you try to remove it and it’s near impossible. Their response to this is why I am writing this reply. A SANDER WILL NOT WORK TO REMOVE THIS. I’ve tried nearly everything a torch, sander, etc. the only way to get it off is chipping. Super frustrating that they recommend their products to put another coat in areas chipping. Well that would be nice if the entire thing wasn’t chipping. Do not buy this unless you only want it to last a short amount of time and have a couple of miserable weekends trying to remove it.
by LakeLife
Response from Joanne, Behr Customer CareMay 3, 2021
Hi LakeLife, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the paint is peeling and chipping across the entire deck and that sanding isn't working. Since the peeling is widespread, I recommend removing the coating by sanding with coarse sandpaper like 40-60 grit sandpaper or a pressure washer on a low setting. Then you can clean the surface, let it dry, and apply a new coating of your choice. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. I'll reach out to you directly to assist you with this further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I hope to hear from you soon! -Joni
