Can this be applied to a concrete pool surround? And will it be durable?

Asked by Clint March 13, 2021
1
Answer

Hi Clint, Thank you for writing in. Behr DeckOver can be applied to concrete pool decks, but frequent water exposure (e.g., sitting water) can break the coating down faster. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions you may have. ~Doris

Can I match a color with this product?

Asked by Tim March 8, 2021
1
Answer

Hi Tim, This specific product listing is for DeckOver already tinted to Pewter SC-131, so we don't recommend using this specific item for color-matching. However, you can have the untinted deep base color-matched in-store. I hope this information was helpful. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions you may have. Best of luck with your project! ~Doris

Can this be used in full sun areas?

Asked by Jess June 25, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Jess - Thank you for your question. The Advanced DeckOver can be applied to wood or concrete surfaces that are exposed to full sun. Best - Sara

Can this be deluded

Asked by Tony June 6, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Tony - Thanks for your question! We don't recommend thinning the Advanced DeckOver as it was designed to be applied at package consistency. If the coating seems to be drying too fast on the surface, it can be thinned with no more than 4 oz. of water per gallon (just make sure the water is incorporated well). Best - Sara

Can I use this product over existing deck paint?

Asked by Charlotte June 3, 2020
2
Answers

Hi Charlotte, Thanks for your question! The Advanced DeckOver can be applied on top of other deck paints in good condition. We recommend cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner and allowing the deck to dry before applying 2 coats of DeckOver to the whole area for a uniform finish. Best wishes for your project! - Sara

This says the product is a "coating". Is this truly paint and if so, what type of paint??

Asked by pm May 11, 2020
1
Answer

Hi pm, Thank you for your question. This product is a film-forming, opaque finish like paint; however, it is a lot thicker than a traditional paint and will dry to a non-skid finish. Best - Sara

I am using this over concrete patio. How do I prepare my surface? Do I etch?

Asked by Shankar March 31, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Ram, Thank you for your question. If your concrete patio is bare, it would be best to etch with something like muriatic acid before cleaning and applying DeckOver. Etching will help increase and ensure adhesion. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions you may have. Good luck with your project! ~Doris

Is this oil or water based?

Asked by Keegan July 29, 2019
1
Answer

Hello Keegan, Thanks for reaching out. The Behr Premium Advanced Smooth DeckOver is a water-based product. It can be applied using an airless sprayer with a .027-.035 tip and 2400-3200 Psi. I hope this information helps and good luck with your project. Best, Roxana N.

Can we get the DeckOver stain in the Wedgewood color in the Solid formula?

Asked by Mary June 25, 2019

Answer

Hi Mary, Thank you for your question. The DeckOver is available in the color Wegdewood SC-107 and can be purchased at your local Home Depot. Best - Sara

I had to replace a few deck boards with pressure treated can I use this product on the new boards.

Asked by Bobd June 16, 2019
1
Answer

Hi Bobd, Thank you for your question! The DeckOver can be used on your new replacement boards as well. To ensure the best adhesion, we recommend allowing new pressure treated wood to dry for at least 6-8 weeks before preparing the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Best - Sara

Huge Waist of money!!!!!!
Seriously the worst most expensive time consuming garbage Ive ever dealt with. I power washed, scrubbed, and prepped the deck. The wood was well seasoned yet nice and solid so new preasure treated was not the issue. The paint seemed promising and first because of how much it was soaking in and for a deck 8x 16 i was at 2 gallons used. I even bought a third for touch ups in the future. I finished it in the fall and the deck has had its first VERY mild winter considering my area and its coming up in strips much like others that have pictures. I will be contacting behr about this it and their disgusting quality

Hi Kurt,

I'm terribly sorry to hear about the peeling issue you're having with DeckOver. I completely understand how frustrating it must and definitely not something we want our customers to go through. I strongly encourage you to contact us as soon as possible. We'd love the opportunity to assist you and turn this experience around.

DeckOver can be removed with a sander/grinder. Your local Home Depot may have rental options available. After removing the loose sections, cleaning the deck, and letting it dry for 24 hours, the surface can be recoated. If there are well-adhered sections, they can be topcoated with water-based coatings.

We look forward to hearing from you and finding a way to make this right.

Kindest regards,

Doris Behr

Hi Robby,

Thank you for reviewing DeckOver. I’m terribly sorry to hear about the peeling issue you're having. It certainly isn’t the performance we’ve come to expect from our products, and I completely understand how disappointed you must be; I’m sure you put a tremendous amount of time and effort into your project. As I’m sure you know, to fix the peeling issue, it's best to sand off the loose coating before cleaning and touching up/recoating. DeckOver was recently reformulated to provide better adhesion and longer-lasting results. I strongly encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance with this matter. We’d love to turn this experience around for you!

Kindest regards,

Doris Behr

Don't bother! I spent over $300 last season on Behr deck cleaner and "Deck Over" paint. It's peeling everywhere- water has gotten trapped under causing rot and mold. Behr won't stand by their product and neither will Home Depot where I bought it. Shame on Behr! It's a lot of work to clean the deck and then had to brush the stuff on because it was so thick. Way to much work and it didn't last one year.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the peeling, rot, and mold growth on your deck after one season! To fix the finish, I recommend removing the loose DeckOver, replacing any boards that are not in sound condition. cleaning the surface, then applying 2 new coats to the whole area for uniformity. So we can assist you with this further, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help - Sara Behr

Dont buy this!
This is an awful product. I wish i had done my research before buying this. There are a bunch of videos online showing how bad this product is. First and foremost, it gets dangerously hot. If your deck is in direct sunlight your family and pets will burn their feet/paws if they walk on it. For that fact alone you shouldn’t buy. Next, it will chip and peel after one season. Yes, its looks great when you first apply but that does not last. Due to the textured surface dirt gets trapped and it becomes very hard to clean. I’m suprised Home Depot still sells this junk. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the surface feels too hot to walk on, and the finish chipped and peeled! To fix the finish, I recommend sanding down the areas that chipped and peeled to remove the loose coating, cleaning the surface with our wood cleaner, then ouching up with more DeckOver. While the DeckOver isn't a heat resistant coating, applying a new coat in a lighter color will help cool the surface down as well. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. - Sara Behr

I wouldn’t use it
I have been dealing with peeling and blistering for a few years. I can’t clean anything off the surface. I will sand my whole deck to remove this product and go back to stain

Hi Bob,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm very sorry to hear ab out the bubbling and peeling issues experineced, as that's not what we want our customers to go through. I understand how disappointing this must be, and I want to help.

The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder. Home Depot usually has great rental options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. If there are DeckOver remnants left, they can be topcoated with a solid color wood stain.

I've emailed you directly to follow up and I look forward to assisting you.

Kindest regards,

Doris

Horrible finish between cracks
I spent an entire weekend working on my deck. Wish I would have been playing with the kids instead. Prepped exactly as recommended. I rolled on 2 coats as instructed with coverage rate similar to recommended ( about 75 sq feet/gallon). Used a half inch nap. Ended up with ugly connecting pieces of paint between deck boards all over the deck. Went through 6.5 gallons between the deck and the spindles. Not sure what to do now, as cutting through these pieces with a knife does not really make them look any better. Huge waste of time and money unless behr can come up with a good solution.

Response from Sara, Behr Customer CareMay 24, 2021
Hi Kevin44 - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the connecting pieces in between your boards! Typically, if you notice any connecting areas while the DeckOver is still wet, it's best to run a brush in between the boards to remove the excess product. If you need to remove these areas after the DeckOver has completely dried, we recommend using a utility tool or knife to cut through them. I've also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and assist you with this further. Thank you again for submitting a review, and I hope to hear back from you! - Sara
Way too thick to apply with roller or brush
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought two 5-gallon buckets of Behr Premium Advanced Deckover. The consistency of the deckover was similar to thick tar. Both buckets were like this. Using a roller was fruitless - the roller would just roll over the surface and not pick up any deckover. The bristles on a brush would bend rather than penetrate the surface to pick up some deckover. Only a putty knife can get any deckover... just imagine how long it would take to finish a deck using a putty knife...

Response from Sara, Behr Customer CareMay 14, 2021
Hi Magnus - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble applying our Advanced DeckOver! This product should have a very thick consistency but should still flow smoothly from a stir stick once the DeckOver has been mixed for a few minutes. Instead of working from a paint tray, I recommend attaching a paint grid to your buckets. This will allow you to dip your roller into the product (and roll off any excess onto the grid) to ensure you have enough product on the roller. I've also reached out to you via email to assist you with this further. Thanks again for submitting a review, and I look forward to helping you get your project back on track. - Sara
Terrible Product!
I read all the reviews beforehand and what I learned was preparation was key. Spring of 2019 I power washed, used a deck cleaner and rented a sander and sanded the whole 16 x 20 deck. 5 days it took from prep to dry. Applied 2 coats and the next spring, it's bubbling up and peeling like old wallpaper. I worked so hard on this deck for this to happen. Will not use any Behr products again and I tell my friends to not use this brand as well. Pictures are attached - Rainy day in Ohio.

Hi Mudda - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and peeling on your deck, especially after the work that went into your project! To fix the finish, I recommend removing the loose DeckOver, cleaning the bare spots with our wood cleaner, then touching up (or applying 2 new coats if this is happening to most of the surface). I've also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and make this right. Thanks again for taking the time to write a review, and I hope to hear back from you. - Sara
