Coverage1st Coat: 300-350 Sq.Ft. and 2nd Coat 600-700 Sq ft. Your first coat is usually more absorbent into the wood surface especially is it’s older and hasn’t been sealed. Once your first coat is on and dried, the second coat goes so much further giving it’s beatiful even tone. It helps to clean your wood with with the Behr wood cleaner first. It opens the pores of the wood, removes any mold and mildewed discoloration, and oxidation discoloration giving your wood a more even colored wood once it dried. Remember to let your wood dry out a couple good days before you seal it. You don’t want to encapsulate any moisture under your sealer. That causes pealing.

Can this be used on treated lumber, and will it alter the outcome?

Can this be used on treated lumber, and will it alter the outcome?
Asked by: sam
We used this on older wood that had not been treated for many years. You really shouldn't put any finish on treated wood the first year. Also, if you live in an area with a lot of snow, this doesn't work very well. If snow sits for a period of time and the deck remains wet, the moisture gets under the finish and it peels off. It worked great for the vertical posts but the deck floor peeled off within a year. Hope this helps!

Is this slippery when wet ?

Asked by: Oldlady
Hi there! As with all surfaces, the Transparent stain might get a little slippery when wet. However, this will be minimal, since the stain will be soaking into the pores of the wood. Hope this helps, and best of luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Asked by: LT
Yes, it can be applied over previously stained wood. I have done this several times on my deck. And I am very satisfied with the Behr brand. DD

1 gal. Cedar Naturaltone Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Wood Finish is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1555.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to apply Right out of the box, it’s ready to use. It’s recommended for wood substrates for properly prepared new to slightly weathered unsealed exterior wood that has a 0-5 year exposure. You must prep the area before you apply the stain to achieve best out of it. I power washed the area with power wash soap to make sure no dirt or debris is left on the surface. This stain gave our 3 years old deck a new life. It’s very easy to apply and dries quickly. The color in the picture on the box is a bit lighter than the actual color once you apply. I used a paint gun to spray an even layer of stain which worked out great. Two coats were applied with 2 hours of gap between each coat. End result made me pleased. Wood grains are still visible giving the wood a warm natural look. Since I stained my deck, there have been lots of heavy pours and continuous beating from the sun light but its holding pretty well. A great product that makes your deck look beautiful again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made a 10 year old fence looks like new When we moved into our house about 2 years ago there was a ceder fence installed. It was very gray. This year I power washed it. Was shocked how clean it came out. After this to protect it I used this product. I am not sure if if it was because our fence was cedar or because of the age but I went though 24gal of this Bahr to cover about 40 panels front and back. Each panel is 4'x6'. Went over 2 times what it states it would cover. To apply it I used a Wagner PaintReady System High-Volume Low Pressure. It worked great. If doing a fence I would recommend a sprayer with this product. Read some people has issues using a sprayer. Not sure if this only works with some sprayers so that is the reason I listed what I used. Very much recommend you have these shaken up at at store before using. I bought a small sample can and found out that there is heavy separation at the bottom. Hard to stir in. Trying that with a 5gl bucket would have been a lot worse. I love the face lift this gave to our backyard. This stuff is so easy for cleaning!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Acrylic based, leaves a rubbery finish I do not recommend this product. It is acrylic based, which does mean it's easy to clean up, and has no fumes. But the surface is rubbery and gummy. I live in New Mexico, and Incredibly dry climate, and after 4 days it still felt gummy. This is not the surface you want for outside furniture. Plus, I'm very skeptical that it will actually weatherize. Oil-based stains work better.

I have no idea how this is getting great reviews but I am just staining my spindles and railing and the finish is absolutely awful. I have shook and stirred this stain until my hand ached thinking it was a mixing problem but no, its the stain quality, shame on Behr. Firstly it is way too red for a transparent and then when the stain drys there are patches of over red and under red in the same brush line????? How is that possible. It goes on evenly but dries really patchy and 2 coats makes no difference. I was really worried about using it on the deck floor so have had to go with an oil but the Behr oil stain has no red in it at all. Over $300 spent and a waste of money, I am loath to ever go with Behr again and they have always been my no1 choice because there are so many to choose from.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as advertised Put together my beautiful redwood porch. Then sealed it with this brand of “Transparent” “Clear” wood finisher. Transparent and Clear...not exactly. I should have stopped when I opened the can and after stirring it was yellow/tan color. But, I trusted the labeling and Home Depot. So I started applying the product. My beautiful redwood planks were now yellow/gold. It did look nice, it that wasn’t the look I was going for. My mistake was thinking it would look different after drying. Now I’ll either need to strip, sand, and try it again or stick with the yellow deck. I’ll definitley never go with Behr again. They can’t even label their products accurately. And I checked, this was not a tinted can that had been returned and re-shelved. Just plain misleading.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stain on mahogany deck Last year I had a new deck built using mahogany for the decking. (half the deck is covered)The previous deck had been severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. My contractor applied Behr #500 Natural. Unfortunately this past winter was extreme and took a toll on the exposed decking. The original application looked terrific when new but I suspect a combination of the very dense mahogany and spotty mill glaze limited optimal product performance. In order to match the undamaged finish under the covered section of the deck I decided to use the same Behr #500 but with extra effort put in to preparation. For prep I power washed and sanded. I applied the stain using a brush. The stain went on easy with few drips. The odor was extremely low. Coverage was exceptional. (A good value) It was dry to the touch in only a few hours (60 degrees & sunny). Clean-up was easy. Behr indicates a 4/6 yr. guarantee( decking/fencing) so time will tell. So far so good..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, really lasts. We applied this on the backside (southwesterly exterior wall) of our cedar bat and board sided house back in spring 2009. Our cedar had been painted once so we used a pressure washer to strip the paint and then after it dried for a day we applied one coat of the BEHR #501 with 4" brushes. The next day we went to look at it and it appeared wet, but upon inspection, that is just how it looks. After 4 years, it still looks the same wet look as it did that first day after, with no graying or other fade as far as I can tell. We have since applied it to our 1405 sq ft home, and it took less than 5 gallons.I highly recommend this product, and all our guests who see it say the same thing- "Is that stain still wet?". Great product, great coverage, be careful not to overlap when you take a break and start back, a second coat makes it noticeably darker. Highly recommend that you pressure wash away any graying of your wood before applying, if you don't, it will be very dark. Fresh wood turns a beautiful reddish-gold color when this cedar naturaltone #501 is applied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's OK for a water based product. Lasted well I've read the other reviews where people said the product lifted, scratched, etc. It makes me wonder how it was applied, and if the material was just not porous enough for the stain to sink in. I pressure washed the deck and applied the product with a pad, then backbrushed. I could definitely tell the difference between a water and oil based product. I didn't think this coating would last a year, but it was acceptable for about 3 or 4. The wood on my deck had weathered before applying, and I'm guessing that allowed better penetration than some people have had. I put on two coats the first time, and will likely do the same this time. A second coat evened the color out. I was scared the first time because it rained like crazy within about 48 hours of application. The rain caused the finished to be sort of blotchy, but after a few weeks it evened out again. For a water based product, this stuff is fine. I thought about applying oil this time, but water based is easier to work with.
