Questions & Answers

Milky finish

I applied a coat of water-based sealer early Sunday morning and waited four hours before applying the second coat. Unfortunately, by that time, portions of the patio in the sun must have been too hot and the sealer has stayed a milky white (though those portions in the shady look terrific.) Any advice as to what I might do to get rid of the “milky bits?”

It'll have to be stripped. Sorry

Does the low luster sealer enhance the color of the stained concrete, when used on floors, etc.? The stain, now dry, look dull and flat.

We've been told that the sealer will enhance the color and give it a look similar to the way it looks when brushed with water.
Asked by: Catherine
Yes, a clear coat deepens colors. To see what your stained floor would look like with clear, wet a small area. You'll see how the color deepens.

Can the product be removed with a pressure washer or would you reccomend a specific cleaner/ stripper?

Asked by: sethcrash
Behr told me it could be removed with power washing. If not we needed to use paint remover/.

I almost returned this due to the bad reviews but I figured it was mainly user error. I sprayed it on lightly and back rolled with 3/8" nap roller. I only put one coat on. If you see a light blue haze after spraying and back rolling, just keep working it with the roller and you should be fine. I used behr tinted stain with loden. I pressure washed my patio also. It's 20 year old concrete. Hope this helps anyone. I never write reviews but I figure behr could use a fair and honest review.

I have a 17 year old paver patio that I power washed and put in new poly-sand between pavers, I do about every 5 years. Looked brand new, perfect. Followed directions and rolled on this product, went on milky but sections did not dry to a clear finish. Part of problem might be that directions say shake well before using. I did this but with just a tiny air bubble to start, vigorous shaking didn't do much. First batch came out thin like milk. Second one was thicker, even after shaking. Inconsistency may be part of problem but my 'perfect' paver patio now looks like it has white paint on parts. Horrible. Tried scrubbing, no go. Hope I can fix this, very disappointed.

I was pretty spooked reading the reviews, but I managed to lay down two coats with no build up or any other issues. The product cured clear, with the expected appearance. Here's what I did to take extra precautions to avoid the issues that seem to plague others. First, I should say that my concrete pad is 25 years old, so it may be more porous than newer concrete. Second, I diligently cleaned the surface with a degreaser and etcher product, and hose-sprayed it off thoroughly, so the concrete would accept the dyes and sealer. And I allowed it to dry 24 hours before applying dyes. When dying, I used two colors and didn't "over-paint" the concrete, leaving some of the natural gray slightly visible in some spots. I allowed 48 hours of dry time after dying, and even used a fan for the first couple hours to help it dry. (It actually poured down rain about six hours after the top-coat of dye, which didn't seem to affect it, but did make me want to wait extra long to make sure it was all dry before sealing). When finally applying the sealer, I chose a day with a high temp of 75 and 60% humidity, with no rain in the 48-hour forecast. I used a good quality spray applicator ($20 at HD) and applied the sealer in light, slightly overlapping passes, to one section at a time (moving nearly at the speed that pros spray paint cars, if you've ever watched that on TV). Before moving to the next section I rolled out any uneven spots to the just applied area with a clean dry paint roller. And to be extra cautious, I used a leaf blower to blow the surface--lingering with the air on any spot or crevice where I could see the sealer still moving slightly on the surface, to help even and push down into the pores. Don't know if this helped, or if it would have self-leveled without it, but given some other reviews I'd recommend it. By doing this I could see the white nearly completely disappear before I moved to the next section, leaving only a bluish sheen (like a slug leaves) that dried clear within the hour. I ended up applying two coats using this method and am happy with the results, which give a slightly damp, non-glossy appearance, like natural stone. The only thing that prevented me from giving it five stars is the extra work (and angst) to make sure it dried clear.

I shied away from this product until I read a review from a landscaper in South Carolina. He was right on the money. This product is excellent for bringing out the color in landscape rock. Two gallons of this product on 10 tons of 3-6" Arizona River Rock in Nevada was enough for a single coat. The rock was rinsed, then washed with detergent, then rinsed again before the sealer was applied. The sealer was applied onto the rock at high pressure (fully pumped) and low volume (fine mist) using a standard 1 gal pump sprayer. Although slightly milky when applied, there was no milky residue once it dried using this method and one coat sufficed. Note, this was applied in full desert sun at about 90 degrees and 12% humidity. Therefore, it dried in a matter of a few minutes. Looks great. The wide view pic shows the job half-way through and the other before & after pic speaks for itself.

Followed the directions and ended up with streaks and dried on white residue all around my pavers. Wrote to Behr and they told me to correct this I should re-seal it again. Are they kidding? Now I have to buy a stripper and start all over again. Stay away from Behr products.

Used a pump sprayer found on the same isle as the Behr sealer to apply the product. Used a 6" mini roller attached to a pole to back roll over the area that was sprayed. Followed directions to keep the white puddles from happening. When white puddles appeared I just used the roller to "erase" them. Happy that the product sealed in the sand that I installed in between the pavers. Product locks the sand down firmly. 500 square feet used 1.8 jugs to apply one coat. Pavers have brightened up and the color of the pavers is more noticeable. Very satisfied with product and glad I trusted Behr to supply a quality product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from None Consistent I purchased 2 gallons of this product to cover my walkway. The first gallon applied like water and made no change in the concrete appearance. The second gallon was a milky solution that gave the balance of the walk a low luster finish. I returned to Home Depot for another gallon and found consistency differences in the product containers. I wouldn't purchase this product again. POOR production control!

Used this product because the Sakrete product was not available in my local store. Did not read the reviews beforehand. Used the product on a newly installed paver patio and walkway on a commercial site. The product does have a milky appearance when applied. Used a hand pump sprayer to apply two coats. Product covered up minor scratches on the surface and enhanced the color of the pavers. Dried clear. Will come back to update review to report how the material stands up to weather and foot traffic.
