Questions & Answers

Primer necessary

The product description states that it has great adhesion, but do you not need to apply primer before painting a deck and railing system with this product?
Asked by: Scott
I did not use a primer when I painted pressure treated lumber. As such, one coat produced uneven results. It took 2 full coats with a 24 hour cure in between to get even coverage. If I do it again, a coat of Kilz will go on first.

We spoke with a paint specialist in the store and they recommended us use this paint. We followed all of their directions cleaned our deck with a cleaner and power washer, then let it dry for multiple days until it was completely dry then painted our deck. Now, after about a year our deck looks terrible looks like we painted it many years ago and needs to be repainted all over again. We followed all directions of your paint specialist and used the paint they recommended I cannot believe how terrible this looks. This was a waste of my time and money using this paint. This is an exterior paint it should have lasted much longer and now Im going to have to buy new paint and re-paint it all over again. I defintely do not have the money to have wasted on this, will not be buying this again and do not recommend anyone using it on a deck.

I had my handyman paint my outdoor wooden ramp, stairs and spindles in July of 2016. This area gets very little traffic. I was dismayed when I walked out to this area in late March to discover that the paint was already peeling and chipping. Now, I will have to pay again to have it pressure washed and repainted! I always thought that Behr was a good quality brand. My opinion of it sure has changed!

The original floor color was a deep red, which was quite visible after years of wear and tear. The BEHR Porch and Patio Paint did a great job covering the old paint. The basement looks really fresh and clean.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do this to yourself. I used this on the concrete floor of my screened-in porch. Someone at Home Depot assured me it wouldn't require a primer. I put down two coats and gave it a few weeks to dry before moving furniture in. And now there are scratches everywhere. Set down and pick up a piece of lightweight furniture? Scratch. Walk on it in hard-soled shoes? Scratch. Look at it the wrong way? Scratch. I can't imagine using this outside and expecting it to stand up to the elements. Now all I can do is put down rugs and look for a better product to repaint with. Whatever it is, it won't be made by Behr and I won't be buying it from Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good floor coating I am a professional with many floor jobs under my belt. I tried this product about a year ago. After cleaning, acid etching and letting the floor dry (floors suck; doing floors correctly really sucks), I applied two coats of black on a basement floor (approx 800 sf) and it looked great; it looked good after one coat, but I bid it for two coats. I just looked at it after about a year and it looks like I painted it last week, and these customers are not easy on this floor--dragging exercise equipment and furniture, cat and litter box, laundry area, teenagers. Pretty impressive product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I had a professional paint it. He sanded the wood INSIDE floor several times. Then used the proper Behr Primer. Waited more then the required time to paint over the primer. It took the paint 8 days to dry in an air conditioned house trying to keep the moisture down. Then after a few weeks of drying we walked on it. It started chipping everywhere we walked. Small chips. You can see the primer when it chips. Behr returned the money for the paint but we are out $1200 we paid the professional to paint it. Try a tougher paint. Also if we can repaint it will cost another $1200 to have it pained. We are old and cannot afford it anymore. Sad paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great I was redoing the finish the deck. Originally used Thompson's water seal with stain. Don't do this. Use this paint and lay it on liberally. Used a brush, that took forever, but looks amazing. Prepped with power washer.
