Questions & Answers

Primer necessary

The product description states that it has great adhesion, but do you not need to apply primer before painting a deck and railing system with this product?
Asked by: Scott
I did not use a primer when I painted pressure treated lumber. As such, one coat produced uneven results. It took 2 full coats with a 24 hour cure in between to get even coverage. If I do it again, a coat of Kilz will go on first.

No more than any other paint. Use wood filler, then paint.

We spoke with a paint specialist in the store and they recommended us use this paint. We followed all of their directions cleaned our deck with a cleaner and power washer, then let it dry for multiple days until it was completely dry then painted our deck. Now, after about a year our deck looks terrible looks like we painted it many years ago and needs to be repainted all over again. We followed all directions of your paint specialist and used the paint they recommended I cannot believe how terrible this looks. This was a waste of my time and money using this paint. This is an exterior paint it should have lasted much longer and now Im going to have to buy new paint and re-paint it all over again. I defintely do not have the money to have wasted on this, will not be buying this again and do not recommend anyone using it on a deck.

I had my handyman paint my outdoor wooden ramp, stairs and spindles in July of 2016. This area gets very little traffic. I was dismayed when I walked out to this area in late March to discover that the paint was already peeling and chipping. Now, I will have to pay again to have it pressure washed and repainted! I always thought that Behr was a good quality brand. My opinion of it sure has changed!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do this to yourself. I used this on the concrete floor of my screened-in porch. Someone at Home Depot assured me it wouldn't require a primer. I put down two coats and gave it a few weeks to dry before moving furniture in. And now there are scratches everywhere. Set down and pick up a piece of lightweight furniture? Scratch. Walk on it in hard-soled shoes? Scratch. Look at it the wrong way? Scratch. I can't imagine using this outside and expecting it to stand up to the elements. Now all I can do is put down rugs and look for a better product to repaint with. Whatever it is, it won't be made by Behr and I won't be buying it from Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good floor coating I am a professional with many floor jobs under my belt. I tried this product about a year ago. After cleaning, acid etching and letting the floor dry (floors suck; doing floors correctly really sucks), I applied two coats of black on a basement floor (approx 800 sf) and it looked great; it looked good after one coat, but I bid it for two coats. I just looked at it after about a year and it looks like I painted it last week, and these customers are not easy on this floor--dragging exercise equipment and furniture, cat and litter box, laundry area, teenagers. Pretty impressive product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great I was redoing the finish the deck. Originally used Thompson's water seal with stain. Don't do this. Use this paint and lay it on liberally. Used a brush, that took forever, but looks amazing. Prepped with power washer.

I couldn't find flooring that I liked well enough for my small bathroom, so I opted to paint over the old sheet vinyl. It covered beautifully in two coats. Plus, I painted a design over it that makes the room seem spacey. It's been a month, and no signs of any problems. I expect it to hold up quite well until I find flooring I like better -- and that may never happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old Sheet Vinyl Floor Fix After cleaning the floor withTSP, I applied two coats of primer, two coats of Behr Porch and Patio floor paint in silver gray low lustre, and one coat of the ultra white gloss porch and patio floor paint stenciled on top. I had to order the paint online to get these colors and finishes. The paint was easy to apply with rollers and had little odor. I followed the guidelines for drying times. You can recoat after 4-6 hours depending on climate and need to wait 72 hours before normal use. I thought this would be a good interim fix until it is time to install a new floor. I am very satisfied with results.
