Questions & Answers

Can this product be applied with a garden sprayer?

Some stains are very thick and will clog a typical garden sprayer, what is the viscosity of this product like, and does it contain any solids or particulate matter?
Asked by: John
I think it is to thick for that.

What is the best grit sand paper for new wood and how much prep needed to use solid stain to get the most years of this product

Asked by: Boss hog
I always use 60-80 as I believe the others are too fine for proper adhesion. Prep is always the key to longevity. Power wash with a cleaner or stripper and neutralize/brighten, then sand if necessary.

I accidentally bought (non-returnable) semi-transparent Behr wood stain instead of solid. Can I make the semi into solid?

Asked by: Toni
No, sorry two different bases. Acrylic vs oil.

What is the stated coverage (Sq/Ft) per gallon ? What is the actual experience coverage (Sq/Ft)?

Asked by: Brian
300 sq ft./gal. but I usually find it is more like 175 on raw cedar wood.

I bought several gallons of this product in May of 2015 and the deck paint started peeling off after this past winter. I spent days power washing and prepping the deck to be sure it was clean and dry before beginning to stain the deck. I was very warm that week in May and the wood soaked up the paint like a sponge. The coverage was not what it claimed. My deck is 12x24 with a 4 foot railing all around and a 12 x 6.5 foot double lattice privacy screen on one end. The first gallon barely covered the full deck, but I didn't care for the color to I went back to purchase a darker tone. To do 2 coats of the darker color and the railings I bought 5 additional gallons and it just barely covered the last of the railings. And now I will need to do the whole thing all over again, very disappointed with this product. Would not recommend this to anyone, sorry to have to give it even one star.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Deck paint 2 coats - really Painting a deck is a chore as it is. this paint needs to be applied in 2 coats?! Really! Used Sable color (brown) on dried out (3 months) PT lumber with brush. HAVE to put 2nd coat as it looks really poor. Had I noticed the label for two coats, I would have chosen a different paint. VERY DISSAPOINTED.

I purchased two gallons (Mountain Spruce) to repaint a 16 x 12 tongue in groove shed. The shed had been previously painted/stained with another Behr product and held up reasonably well for 15 years. I power-washed the shed, then after it dried, I put one coat of Zinsser 1-2-3 primer to help seal the existing stain and wood. After a day, I opened the Behr and was surprised by its lack of viscosity. It was extremely watery. I mixed thoroughly and poured into the roller tray. As I started applying, it was evident that I would need two coats. As it turns out, I needed three+! Very disappointing for a product that is supposed to be the top of its line AND opaque. We'll see how it holds up to the Buffalo winter.

I have always used Behr paint and have always had good experiences with their other products, so I did not hesitate to purchase this. I had a new porch and front steps on my elevated home and they were built with treated pine. I waited about 6 months to ensure they were completely dry and ready for a finish. Then I thoroughly pressure washed all the surfaces, waited another few days to completely dry, then applied 2 coats of this product per the instructions. That was last year at this time, and this "stain" is pealing and very scratched up now. It doesn't even seem like stain. It just seems like regular paint. How does stain peel? It seems that it would have actually stained the wood, not just put top coat on it. I sanded all peeling areas and pressure washed again, and then just applied 2 new coats of this product simply because I still had some left. I'll see how long this treatment lasts, and then I'll redo it with a better solution. On the plus side, this stuff goes on well and looks great right after application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Over Due! It had been over 7 years since the last time I stained my deck. It was long overdue and the surface appearance showed it. We live in an area of the country where the deck can remain under snow cover for up to 4 months in the winter. It only took one gallon to bring it back to life and make it look the same as the day we moved into the house in 2001. I will likely ALWAYS buy Behr products for painting and staining. We have used them in every room in our house and most of the walls still look as good as they did when we first painted them in 2002. That is pretty impressive having raised three children in the house. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from False labeling. This is NOT 10 Years. More like 2 years at the most. All I ever buy is Behr ..... False labeling. This is NOT 10 Years. More like 2 years at the most. All I ever buy is Behr ... nothing but. Very disappointed in this product. I would consider this more like paint, not stain. Just like other users, I pressure washed, sanded and prepared the deck. It looked great initially. But, after 2 seasons, it is faded and has started to crack and peel. To label and claim a product as 10 years, they would had to have developed and applied this back in 2006. Hmmm ... about that?

Heard some horror stories about his product, but assumed it was the way they cleaned prepared and applied. Had favorable reviews on line. So i purchased and follow all procedures to a "T" since this was a big project for me. Applied last fall at end of season. Deck has not been used yet. But areas are peeling off that haven't even been walked on yet this season. I imaging by end of summer it will be a real mess and eye sore. Unless I can power wash it off and then go to a Thompson water seal or something like that. Cannot recommend.
