Questions & Answers

Is this sealer toxic if used on wood floors in hallways of brownstone?

Asked by: SG930
Hi SG930, The Semi-Transparent Wood Stain is not a toxic coating. And we do not recommend applying it on wood floors in a hallway; this is an exterior stain only. It will be best to use an interior floor coating for this project. Unfortunately, we don't manufacture interior wood stains so it will be best to work with the Home Depot to see if they have a product to recommend. Best regards, Takhari

Can I use this material on pressure treated plywood ?

I have a pt plywood floor used as a garage surface.
Asked by: Paddy
Hello Paddy, Thanks for your question. We can recommend this product on pressure treated wood after the injected chemicals have a chance to air out (typically 6-8 weeks, but please check with the wood manufacturer or vendor for their exact timeframe). Then, you would prep the wood as the label states before staining. Well wishes for your project!

1 gal. #SC-125 Stonehedge Solid Color Waterproofing Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 231.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stain bubbled and came off with wet weather My husband and I installed a beautiful natural cedar deck in August. After much research I purchased the Behr Waterproofing Stain and Sealer. We followed the directions precisely for preparing the wood and applying the stain. Now, with the wet winter the stain has bubbled and come off. Terrible product! Huge disappointment to have to start over and sand the entire deck and find a new stain, not to mention the cost and labor which will not have to do again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed in product I bought this stain & sealer last fall and unfortunately the stain has already pealed up on my railings and high traffic areas. The recommended directions were followed. Sanded used recommended would cleaner and applied according to instructions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Color and Easy Application I chose the Tugboat solid-color stain from the BEHR Premium Wood Coatings line when I needed to stain my deck. I’d read a lot online that you have to be really careful with stains because they can leave “lap marks,” but I found that the solid stain color was incredibly forgiving and I didn’t have a problem with it at all. It went on smoothly and dried pretty quickly, leaving the wood a beautiful chocolate-y brown hue. Within 24 hours, you can start walking on the deck (light traffic only is recommended) and by 72 hours, it’s fully cured. I worked on it a couple hours a day over a few days, working in the morning before it got too hot (and the bugs came out!), and it proved to be a really straightforward DIY project that I was able to complete all on my own.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling and cracking Add my voice to those with cracking and peeling issues in spite of following directions exactly. Started after two years. I had hoped the 10 year warranty would have yielded several trouble free years. I have way too much deck to sand and refinish with something else, so I'm going to spot repair with the Behr product. Will warn others not to use the stuff. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Color but WON’T Last We bought this stain 2 years ago. We followed the directions to a “t” for prep and application. They color was initially beautiful but within the season looked dirty and soap and water did not restore it anywhere near original color. After one winter was chipping everywhere. After 2 winters the deck needs totally stripped and restrained. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrrible Product We are contractors that fell into the belief last year that Behr exterior stains would hold up and have a good warranty. Every deck we used this product on, peeled after the first year. EVERY deck. We have a name and reputation on the line and using this product has brought our service into question, even though the year before using Behr, we have had no problems with another stain. The directions on the can we followed, and its interesting to note that they have been changing year to year. Although a refund of the stain is possible, we have been put in a tough position since our customers are looking to us to remedy the problem. Last year I considered spoke with other contractors and homeowners, who have the same issues.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Why can't I clean this deck? We purchased our home last fall. One of the main features of the house is a 3 level, 1000SF deck. After a rough winter the deck was in need of refinishing. After lightly pressure washing, sanding and cleaning the deck, it was finally ready for application after properly drying out. 6 gallons and 2 weeks later the deck was completely done and looked like new. We just hosted an outdoor cookout for 20 people, including 8 young kids and a couple of dogs. The kids being active, tracked a lot of surface dirt onto the new deck. After first only hosing the deck down,it still looked terrible. Then we wet scrubbed the deck and hosed again. The dirt won't come off. This is the first deck I have ever owned in over 30 years of home ownership that won't come clean. I don't want to use a chemical cleaner. Recommendations would be appreciated.
