Questions & Answers

How many sq ft will 1 gal of Behr Premium Wood Stain (semi transparent) cover?

Deck was previously stained but has been stripped.
Asked by: Barry
I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

because it is water based, does it crack or peel?

Asked by: penny
I've used this particular stain/sealer for several years. If you properly prepare the surface before staining (sand to remove all loose previous finishes) it will last many years. I have previously used Thompson's and got less than a year of service. I'm now on 4 years with the Behr stain and it looks as good as the day I installed it. I'll never use Thompson's or any other brand again.

Do i need to use a clear gloss over this stain

Asked by: journeyfan
It is not needed, on my deck. But I used this same stain on a outdoor bench because I wanted more of sheen and water repel.

can this behr product be used on a deck that has another waterproofer stain on it?

Asked by: 1234
I would suggest removing the old waterproofing stain first using either a stain stripper or an orbital sander and a medium grit sandpaper. If you don't, your new stain may not adhere correctly and could begin peeling ahead of the advertised warranty.

This product started peeling and developed black mold within the first 6 months. It is not a stain that absorbs into the wood, but just lays on top and it is rubbery. Do some online research. There are complaints all over about these exact issues, and Behr has known about them for a few years. I have been in contact with Behr and am waiting to see what the will do. From what I have read, and what Behr has told me, you have to strip the product off which involves a lot of labor. So sorry we listened to Home Depot's recommendation of this product. They should not be selling a product that has been know to fail repeatedly.

I applied this product to my Northern California home's cedar sidewall shingles and after just two years the product is failing: color is faded everywhere and on SW exposures the film is disappearing and areas of bare cedar is starting to show through. The shingles underlayment is Obdyke Home Slicker Rainscreen so no moisture can be trapped there. I followed all label instructions for preparation and application of this "weatherproofing stain". I am now faced with re-staining my house (hopefully) before winter but will never again use Behr. The material cost is insigificant compared to the labor invested to do a proper job so look for the best product and skip this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks Brand NEW !! We stained our play-scape and patio cover with BEHR Chocolate semi-transparnet stain. Both are 17 years old and needed serious attention. The stain has given a fresh look to our backyard and the play-scape and patio look brand new! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

It is PAINT, not stain! I used it to stain my new, clean, dry cedar privacy fence. I followed the instructions and applied two light coats with a Wagner sprayer and back brushed if it puddled. However, it does not penetrate the wood at all, it is not semi-transparent, and now I am left with 70 feet of "painted" fence!!! The pictures tell the story. Notice on one of them you can see the Behr "paint" on the left side, and on the right side is a different semi-transparent stain that actually penetrates the wood and shows the wood grain. I will be taking my 4 gallons of "paint" back to HD for a full refund.

Label on can states that the stain will last 4 years. Didn't last a year. Product is peeling in several spots. This product might be ok for fences but on horizontal surfaces, it is a joke. The biggest problem is all the work I have to do to strip off the old Behr acrylic and prepare the deck surface for a oil based product. I had hoped to use a water-based, less toxic material but I should have known better. Apparently the only less work intensive alternative is to put the same inappropriate product on again this year.

I was told I needed to purchase the Behr wood cleaner prior to applying this product. I had already power washed the deck to prepare it. I had to purchase 2 gallons as I didn't have enough even tho according to directions I should have. This whole project took many hours of time and $$ while working full time and caring for an ailing husband. So sad my entire project was a waste of time!! Wish I had read the negative reviews prior to purchase. The sales man at Home Depot convinced me this was the best I could buy. This was all done at the end of summer 2016, come Spring 2017 and the deck is peeling all over!! I will never shop home depot again and will let everyone I know not to purchase Behr products! Might have been a good product at one time but no longer...

It went on streaky/splotchy, didn't look anything like the pewter grey we mixed(looked blue), and looked more transparent than semi-transparent. It was applied on new wood and we used the deck cleaner to prep it. I can't speak to how durable the stuff is but does it really matter when it makes your deck look horrible? Now I'm stuck with trying to remove this stuff so I can use some other brand.
