Questions & Answers

because it is water based, does it crack or peel?

Asked by: penny
yes, it does crack and peel. I used it on new pine boards for my outdoor gate last spring, the wood dried out from the 100+ degree temps over the summer in AZ, wood grain split, and this past winter the wood was soaked under this sealer. The boards are now dark brown and black in some spots from trapped water inside the wood. Grain is splitting. Will make your wood rot under the finish. This is like a paint which you don't want outdoors. You want a penetrating oil based sealer/water repellent with UV protection. This way the wood can still breathe and won't rot. I won't be wasting my money on this product again. Learned my lesson. It looked nice for a year until this winter when all the rain and cold weather came. Maybe it was because it was green (not fully dried) pine wood...... don't know, but I do know there's way better products out there and my fault for using pine. Redwood and Cedar are best outdoor woods along with oil based transparent penetrating stain with UV protection. This might be a good product for use with Kiln dried wood but, I would definitely make sure there is no splits or cracks in the wood before applying this stuff. Otherwise it's pointless.

How many sq ft will 1 gal of Behr Premium Wood Stain (semi transparent) cover?

Deck was previously stained but has been stripped.
Asked by: Barry
I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

How long can I wait till 2nd coat? I've put 1st coat on floor and still sticky after 4 days now rain in forecast and might be a week till I can put a 2nd coat on floor. Is that too long? Should I even bother based on reviews I'm now seeing about this I wish I could take this back, I have a lot of time invested in this.

What prep is required? There was a coating applied previous that seems to be wearing away.

Asked by: Gi
You need to sand it smooth after pressure cleaning if you want a uniform finish application to bare wood is essential otherwise use a solid color stain

1 gal. #ST-330 Redwood Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 1408.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from The worst stain ever If you value your personal time and your money do not use this product. I had a brand new deck that i bought this stain for. I let the deck season for one year. I used Behrs wood cleaner before i put the stain down to make sure i had a clean surface for a nice bond. I'm so glad that i only painted the floor of the deck and not the entire thing. The deck looked great when i got done. However, within three months all of the stain started to pop up and began to look terrible. I just finised pressure washing, stripping and sanding the entire deck. I thought i was using a quality product that would save me time. So far i've spent about 7 hours to get the deck back to the way it was so i can use a real product. I've always been happy with behr paints inside but this event will probably keep me from buying any of their products again. It's terrible that products like this are out there. Don't waste your time or money. Use oil based products for the deck there is no way around it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4 Months later, wood is absorbing water I applied this on my deck, about 25 years old. The deck was previously coated with a waterproofing product from a different manufacturer. I saw the advertisements for Behr having longer durability than others, and I decided to give it a try. 4 months later, rain water is not beading, but appears to be soaking into the wood. I used it according to instructions, the old clear waterproofing product was off, and no water was beading on the deck. Applied two coats of this product, used just about as much as is suggested based on the square footage for my deck, so I assume the thickness of the application was was at least in the right ballpark. I should add that the deck is barely used. We use our screened in porch, and the deck is next to it, but I only go out there to use the grill, even though that part of the deck is quite large. I think the color of the product is amazing - the deck looks spectacular. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to be 'weather proofing' the wood. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really great to be able to get small stain samples!... Really great to be able to get small stain samples! Hard to find. You have to apply as many coats on your test piece as you plan on applying to the final project to get a good idea of what works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product Have used the Behr Semi Transparent Deck Stain for the last two times we have re-stained the deck. We live in NEw England so winters wreck havoc on Deck Stain. Toughest thing about Behr stain is selecting the proper color. It is difficult if you want to go slightly darker as the colors are very close and obviously they look quite different after 3-4 years of weathering. Product is easy to use, provides great coverage and fills in those small age cracks nicely with a second coat. Since our deck is about 800 SQ ft it is a major chore, but looks great when completed. Covered great and now my deck looks fresh and new.Sealed all wood and water beads off!!! Love it! Now going to do back deck too(I picked Sc-127,Beach beige color) Covered Great, even imperfections that arose from natural weathering .I would definitely recommend !!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stain I've used We bought a cedar house in the country about 15 years ago & it was a faded gray color. We wanted to freshen it up & protect the wood so we chose Behr semi-transparent stain. Our color is Stonehedge & it was the perfect choice. It is a bit more blue than the color chart shows but that makes it stand out. The bit of color lets the cedar wood show but still dresses it up while protecting it. Sort of like subtle makeup on a face- enhances without covering the natural beauty. Our house went through monsoon rains & 145 mph winds with Hurricane Katrina. We had 3 trees through our roof but the stain held up great. After the repairs were done we headed to Home Depot, got more stain & touched up where needed. Except for the massive tree loss to our property you couldn't tell the house was affected. The Behr stain matched that well even though we had stained it several years before the storm. If you want a quality product I would recommend this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's OK for a water based product. Lasted well I've read the other reviews where people said the product lifted, scratched, etc. It makes me wonder how it was applied, and if the material was just not porous enough for the stain to sink in. I pressure washed the deck and applied the product with a pad, then backbrushed. I could definitely tell the difference between a water and oil based product. I didn't think this coating would last a year, but it was acceptable for about 3 or 4. The wood on my deck had weathered before applying, and I'm guessing that allowed better penetration than some people have had. I put on two coats the first time, and will likely do the same this time. A second coat evened the color out. I was scared the first time because it rained like crazy within about 48 hours of application. The rain caused the finished to be sort of blotchy, but after a few weeks it evened out again. For a water based product, this stuff is fine. I thought about applying oil this time, but water based is easier to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We use this solid stain on the farm house and... We use this solid stain on the farm house and the outbuildings of the Zagray Farm Museumlocated in Colchester Connecticut. This is a non-profit farming museum that is a snapshot of what a dairy farm looked like in 1916. The farm is open to the public 3 weekends a year.We last painted the buildings in 2001 and the product worked great since then. We also usethis Behr stain on other buildings in a barn red color.
