How hot will this get? Will it be too hot to the foot on a Florida pool deck?
Asked by: JFL
I just applied to pool deck last week took 3 coats and in about 8hrs of direct sunlight no clouds on a 90'day I could just about stand it bare foot, I measured 126' on a infrared thermometer and that was the tan color pretty much no change compared to older tan regular cement paint that was on pool deck previously. Don't paint your final roll in a straight line use a cross hatch or you will get lines that will show when dry

Can it cover concrete stairs?

Our front porch has 3 steps. The roof overhang is about 3 feet. It is on the north side of our home; the strong winds come from the south and would not be a factor. The vertical rise is 7 1/2 inches for each step. Even if not recommended, could you provide guidance on how to make the Granite Grip stick to the vertical surfaces? Thanks.
Asked by: Jeff
yes, it works very well on steps.

1 gal. Tan Granite Grip Decorative Flat Interior/Exterior Concrete Floor Coating is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 1787.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome! but, hard to get right I gave this five stars because it is an awesome product. For the average DIYer, I would give this product three stars. Very hard to get it perfect, not a one person job. I read some of the reviews on here, and the most helpful one was the one who ended up using a heavy duty sprayer for the 2nd coat. I didn’t have one, so, while one person laid on the second coat with the texture roller are used a regular nap roller with no pressure to smooth it out. This worked much better than trying to use texture roller to smooth out. I still ended up having some roller lines, but not as bad as some people ended up with. Also, it says not to use on vertical surfaces, which I did anyway. And it came out fine. You just have to put on the right amount and watch it so it doesn’t sag. For as much is this product costs, if I were to do it again, I’d probably get a professional to apply it, only if they have already used the product

This product came highly recommended to me and I have used Behr before so I took the plunge ! This has turned out the project nightmare!! I have 18 man hours into this job and am NOT done yet... I am going over another Behr product on concrete in pool area. So far I have applied 2 coats and used 20 gallons of the Granite Grip Paint.. more than DOUBLE the amount of Behr product used just 4 years ago. Issue is not the amount of coats it's the poor coverage... it is terrible It is like applying glue with a roller, I am sorry but it is this coverage is the worst I have seen and I have done alot of concrete painting in my day... I estimate I will need another coat, at nearly $500 per coat.... project cost approaching $1500 TRIPLE the budget I had and triple what it costs 4 years ago... I hope the end result is worth it but I honestly can't appreciate my efforts right now because it has been a nightmare of a product to work with. I can NOT recommend this product to anyone, ever if the end result is great the cost and effort are not worth it... extremely disappointed in this product and I am done with Behr.....

We looked at many options including epoxy. Then we stumbled upon this granite paint which reviews recommended for long term usage. Despite the high cost, we decided to invest in it. We bought a 5gl bucket for $235.00+tax at Home Depot. The applying was extremely painful, physical, and demoralizing. After 2 coats, the paint was brownish and the finish terrible. Too late to quit! So we bought yet another 5gl bucket and applied another 2 coats. The finish finally appeared like on the picture with its deep granite color and what seemed a very resistant depth. We let it sit for a couple of days. All looked good, until about a week later, I notice that the paint was chipping where my car tires were sitting. It is obvious that this paint, regardless of what the manufacture claims, does not handle heat from the tires at all. Since then, there are concrete spots the length of the tires. Definitely not worth the cost and the pain! Now I am looking to buy car mats to protect the rest of the floor. Another $600.00 to be added to the garage project! In hindsight, we should have gone the floor mats way from the get-go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Porch Make over Behr Granite Grip does come out looking nice but it isn’t the easiest to apply. The direction call for you to roll on the first coat noting that it may not cover and is mainly a sealing coat. So why not have another can for that. When I was trying to roll this on it left much of the granules in the tray mostly absorbing the moisture. After a few square feet of this I decided to pour the mix on the area and used the rolled to spread it out with much better results. After about 4 hours I applied the 2nd coat in the same manner coming out with great results. Very happy with this but it did take 2 gallons for my porch. The porch had reddish pavers and paint prior to this and 98% was gone. Only a small area the red did still bleed through and will need touching up. When I resurface the walkway I’ll touch up that area. Over all it came out great I’m impressed and can’t wait to finish the rest.

Not easy to work with, especially in small areas or detailed work. But it is quite forgiving over larger areas. I applied it to primed (regular Kilz primer) wooden stairs. The first photo is after applying the first coat. The top stair is layered with a paint brush, for the rest of them I used the specified roller. Needless to say, it did not look good and I was seriously concerned. The second photo shows the stairs after about five coats. Looks gorgeous and perfectly functional--non-slippery, with a beautiful texture. Love it. The texture is nice and even, so far is has held up very well after about three weeks. The paint has a consistency of concrete, quite easy to apply with a roller over larger and flat area. But it is harder to use a brush in smaller areas or tight corners. This would be the only drawback or something to consider in my experience. But I would use the paint again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Do, Just follow directions! I have not ever attempted to do anything with concrete before in my life. This was my first experience with "staining" or "painting" concrete of any kind. I tried to buy "stain" and "paint" and I tested on area and did not like the result. I felt like I as a first time user using those products I could not get it to look good. So I decided I would try the granite grip and if that didn't work I would hire a profession to complete the project. I was happy I attempted the granite grip! As it saved me over half the cost and professional would be. Although time consuming the granite grip worked well and looked professional. It has a good texture plus if you follow the directions you won't become frustrated. Remember this is a thick texture and it takes time to complete. Don't become overwhelmed when the first coat looks like its not working. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I used the product to rejuvenate an aging pre-fabricated concrete staircase. Before applying I first sealed all large cracks and holes with hydraulic cement. Then I applied the Granite Grip. The Granite Grip ensured a consist texture and basically made the entire staircase look new. It is a bit expensive and you may not achieve the specified coverage of 50 sq ft per gallon. Some areas required 3 to 4 coats to achieve a consistent color and coverage, however the effort is worth it. Its much less expensive than replacing stairs!

Must work in small sections, have a light hand, and have a lot of patients. Three stars just because I thought it was difficult to blend. Don't skip the prep work! Working on 500 sq.ft. patio and per coverage instruction I would need (2) 5 gal. buckets. This is how I did it...I had a 5 gal. bucket and dipped my roller heavily in paint. With a light hand, rolled back and forth in one direction working the grit out evenly...looks like a grit wave. Working with a wet edge from my last section, I could then work in different directions to blend. After two coats I had transparent spots and I was a little discouraged when I had to do a third coat. Not easy stuff to work with. I had to use more paint than what the coverage amount indicated. I also contacted Behr regarding coverage issue and they were very helpful...I suggest contacting if you have problems and speak nicely. I'm happy with the results for a DIYer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You have to develop some experience with applying this product in order to do a very good job.... You have to develop some experience with applying this product in order to do a very good job. Because of the particulate matter in the product it makes it more difficult to get a uniform distribution of all product in the container. It is important to apply two coats of the surfacing material. I acquired some valuable experience applying the first coat which was very helpful in applying the top coat to achieve a high quality finish. It is important to have the surface temperature below 90 degrees so that the product will flow better and give you more working time to uniformly spread the product. If you are resurfacing your driveway do not drive on it for at least 2 or 3 weeks. I drove on mine after two weeks and it put a somewhat visible tire print in the surface. Also if a vehicle is parked in one spot for one to two hours it will putt a black tire print in the pavement which will almost completely wash away with rain and time. I used GG-15 (Amythist) which is a tan color.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor coverage on brushed surface over a brushed concrete surface I only had 289sq ft to cover I purchased 5 gallons thought I could stretch it out. Applied first coat according to the video looked blotchy and streaky very uneven coverage expected that ...waited for it to dry did a second coat same think but starting to see the results figured I need another coat got another 5 gallons maybe have some for repairs did the 3rd coat better but not great did a 4th coat still not complete probably about 80% nice looking product but difficult to apply so now I called the customer care and explained how I've used 10 gallons on 289sqft I am a professional I know what I'm doing and they didn't seem surprised at all the coverage was so poor they offered to send me 3 free gallons of product which hopefully will complete the job I've attached pics of the progress. So if you planning a job expect to double your costs on this product if applying over a brushed concrete surface

It took 3 days (for adequate drying time) and 3 coats and it still looks bad. I bought a gallon of porch paint for 19 bucks and a bag of sand and it works great for a non slip surface. Took about an hour. I like Behr paint but this stuff is a waste of time and money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I purchased this product to use on the floor of my screened in porch. The floor had an outdoor carpet which I had to remove. It was very hard to get the adhesive off of the floor. I did the best I could but there were still imperfections. I did what the instructions said for the prep work except I didn't etch the concrete. I did a test area in which I put on a concrete paint/primer first. With all the imperfections I thought an extra coat wouldn't hurt anything and help hide them. The test area went great. The first coat looks horrible and kind of worried me. It is very think and does not spread like paint. After the second coat went on it really looked much better. I continued using the base coat sonce it worked so well with the test area. If you do this get a color that is close to the color of the granite grip. The best luck I had was pouring it out on the floor and then rolling it out like a fan and not applying hardly any pressure. The mpre pressure you apply the more it clumps up. It doesn't cover much area so, don't be discouraged. I did two coats and it looks great. I will probably put another coat on just for extra protection. Considering how may bad reviews this product gets, I'm surprised Home Depot is still carrying it. Take a look at some of the pictures showing the coating peeling off the concrete and that's what happened to me. I bought 10 gallons to cover a huge patio slab that was brand new. I followed the instruction explicitly. The first rain storm, I noticed these blisters all over it. When I pressed on them, water squirted out. I stared scraping them off and the coating had totally lost it's adhesion to the concrete. Is the name "Granite Grip" some kind of joke that the manufacturer thought up? I've since spent $1,00 on pavers that I'm gluing down in the surface (after scraping off all the blistering patches.) I will NEVER trust anything like this from Home Depot again!

I used Granite Grip on a small front porch of a house in the process of fixing it up to be sold. I spent a great deal of time prepping the concrete since it had previously be covered with carpeting. I used a grinding wheel to take off the final layer of adhesive, filled in the cracks and pock marks with thinset mortar, the kind one would use with setting tile. Then I sanded and ground these areas, hosed it off and let dry prior to painting. I did like the final result but the product did not roll on very well as suggested. Yes, I did use a 1/4 in nap roller but in the end I used a wide brush to get the result I was looking for. You will need two coats of this for sure and it didn't go as far as suggested. I ended up ordering another gallon to complete the job. I am pleased with how it looks but a bit disappointed in how it rolls on and the amount it takes to make it beautiful. I plan on using this product again but with a little more experience and wisdom. I hope it lasts a long time....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product for my unique project This product worked extremely well for my project. The concrete contractor who did the flat work for my pool was less than stellar and I have had any number of problems related to his poor workmanship. One of the glaring issues was the coping around the pool edge. After doing a number of repairs I was ready to resurface but had no idea what to use. I saw this product and decided to give it a try. Thankfully my coping was only about 3.5 inches so I didn’t have problems with sagging as you might expect on a vertical surface. I took the advice of another poster and painted a cinder block first to see color and get a feel for application. I used a stiff bristle 3in Nylon brush. The product is very thick and goes on like cake frosting. The advice on coverage is accurate my surface took 4 coats. It will look bad after first coat but don’t get discouraged. It will really start to look good after coat 2. Once you let it dry a bit the thin spots are obvious and it’s not difficult to get complete coverage. The end result is very attractive and perfect for my purpose. Even if it doesn’t age well, I can always go back and touch up as needed without to much trouble. I am really happy I found this project and I’m seriously considering using it for the entire pool deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicer looking than concrete! My front entrance way has always had me looking for something to upgrade the look. plain concrete floor although in good shape, it cleans up nicely but still we have the look of plain concrete. I considered tiles but have not found outdoor tile that we like. paver woukld mean lifting up the concrete or raising hieght which we don't need or want. Considered painting but that becomes an every other year job we also don't need. I used this for my front porch that was starting to show some small hairline cracks and the coverage looks very good. However, they recommend using an adhesive roller and this thing was a waste of money. It would only pick up the glue paint, but almost none of the sandy grip stuff. I ended up using a cheapie 4 inch brush, that I cut the brush hairs down in half and applied it using brush strokes in cross hatches in 1 foot square sections at a time. It worked very well and it would seem like you would almost need to think of this like floating out a thin layer of tile mortar, but using a brush to smooth it out. It took sometime, using knee pads, and 2.5 gallons for a 10 X 14 porch area. I cleaned up the cement with a concrete cleaner and scrubbed it and then let it dry for a few hours. It looks very nice and the outcome looks just like the picture. A bit pricey, but I like it and for a low traffic area like my front porch, should do just fine. It takes time to put down, but thick strokes work better and then I waited a full day and filled in some of the areas that were a bit thin and dabbed in the sections that needed to look fuller. I waited another full day, before putting back the chairs and stuff. In Arizona heat, it dries up in less than 30 minutes, that you could walk on it.

We are out over FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS trying to apply this to our carport! The first application (takes 3-4 coats to cover,NOT the 2 they claim) was applied in June of 2018. 2 months after application, bubbles on the surface were observed as were what appeared to be water stains on the surface. We later learned this was from rain that had blown into the carport. When this problem was reported to Behr we were told that the entire surface needed to be removed and the paint reapplied. We had to rent a grinder from Home Depot to grind down the surface to remove all the existing paint. We were told to then pressure wash, acid etch, pressure wash again and then reapply the Granite Grip. We did all this, it took weeks to complete between drying times, and NOW after just one month following the final application we had rain get into the carport and there is a HUGE WATER STAIN on the carport!!! THIS STUFF IS NOT WATERPROOF AND HOW IT CAN BE PROMOTED AS A DRIVEWAY AND GARAGE COVERING IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

This product fails in multiple ways, which is disappointing since we've had generally positive experiences with Behr. 1. COVERAGE AREA. Did not cover the area it set it would. One bucket barely covered 1 coat, when it should have covered 2 coats. 2. COVERAGE QUALITY. Even after *4* coats (2 buckets), the product did not cover thoroughly (see photos). There were *still* patches of the old surface showing through. Even with frequent stirring, the product would apply thin patches of clearcoat and thick clumps of the granulate. 3. EASE OF USE. As mentioned previously, the product clumps together despite frequent mixing. It also dried very quickly when exposed to air (whether in the bucket or in the paint tray). It did not apply easily, even with the specified epoxy roller (I had marginally better success with a 3/4-nap paint roller). An added note: applying in direct sun is ill-advised and makes everything worse, but even applying in early morning, or late at night (after 9pm), we still had poor results. Attached photos show the old surface showing through after 4 coats. The one positive is that in the patches where it applied correctly, it looked and worked great with good color and texture. Unfortunately, it is just way too expensive for a product that is inconsistent and does such a poor job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage and professional look I had to redo a pool deck area and saw the rebate offer for Labor Day weekend so I thought good time to start. I did a small test patch with a brush and roller, didn't like the effort needed for an ok result. I looked at YouTube videos as recommended by the Behr rep at HD. I found one where as it says as, in another review, to apply with a hopper. I got a texture sprayer for about $20 at the store you get in the mail with 20% off and free flashlights, used the smallest nozzle and went on great. Need to cut in with a nylon brush and takes anywhere from 2 to 3 coats based on what you had on there previously. I do not recommend rolling as it takes 5x longer. Make sure you prep and cover anything you don't want to overspray. Understand too you are spraying part epoxy in the air, so wear breathing mask at minimum, it creeps up on you even if you don't smell it. Only disappointment was the Behr rep said NOT to spray it on, and I actually found this as best method. Good luck, bring some patience and definitely follow the advice not to try to put it all down with the first coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning after look This is the 3rd time I have used Behr granite grip and the results for DIY are awesome. I have found that if you prep your concrete just with a good cleaning, apply a concrete paint undercoat of similar color to your granite grip you will find the coverage better. The first coat of granite grip is really a base coat, the 2nd coat is where the texture really shows itself. I have used this product both on porch areas walkways and vertical . Can't say enough about the ease and looks of this product. I use the Behr gloss sealer as a finisher and rain repellant. Works great. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Listen to the 1 and 2 star reviews, you have a 60% chance of being satisfied with the product. It is not cheap, it's expensive and it does not work. It says it covers 50SF with 2 coats but my 45SF space was covered with only one coat and the entire gallon. The product is thick and I even purchased the ADHESIVE roller cover it requires, NOW I have a dilemma, to purchase another gallon, another $50.00 and take a chance that it may work well with the second coat, or go somewhere else and use their product. Y will request a refund from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY--

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great idea ( With Horribe Results ) I purchased 25 gallons at Home Depot ( University Parkway W/S, NC ) I decided to use this product on my concrete pool deck due to the look that is marketed. The deck has approximately 1,700 sq ft of concrete. I chose to work with a 600 sq ft area of the deck to determine if the look would come out as advertised. I applied the 1st coat as directed, then the 2nd coat as directed. Outcome at that point was high/ low and shadow areas ( Looked horrible) I then applied 3rd coat, no big difference. My final attempt was 4th coat, same results. Ended up putting 15 gallons on 600 sq ft of concrete, and felt very disappointed. If this product would apply correctly ( Impossible) I would have purchased what ever was required to complete my project. After making ever attempt to apply this product and have it to look as advertised with 0 results, I had to give up and bring the other 10 gallons back for a return. Try again Bear ( This product cannot be applied and have the appearance that you market )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage! My wife and I pulled up the old carpet on our patio, cleaned up the concrete and put down the Granite Grip. Took about a week working after our regular jobs and the weekend. The prep took the longest. The old carpet glue did not want to come off! We followed the instructions on the can and watched a few videos on line. And now it looks and feels great!! I'll let you know how it holds up!
