Questions & Answers

This product (#64) is a "stripper". does that mean that I will essrntially be stripping off the old paint?

Asked by: James
It will not remove paint very well. From other reviews, it appears to remove stains. As I suspected, my deck was painted, not stained. I went through a few gallons and hours of frustration to confirm this. As in other forums, finding the proper stripper can be trial and error, unless you know yourself what coating type was used before (I did not). I will be going with a belt sander rather than spend hours and a few hundred dollars finding the "right" stripper.

Must product/stripper be neutarlized before re-sealing?

Asked by: Miffer
Products active ingredient is Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye and caustic soda, it's an oxidizer. It a alkaline product which can be neutralized with acids like Boric, Oxalic acid bought at paint stores and typically called "wood brighteners or wood cleaners", vinegar also works full strength. All of the acid washes will need to be THOROUGHLY rinsed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide Now you know a bit more about the chemical you're working with, let's get back to the question; Should you neutralize the product after a THOROUGH rinsing as directed on the label? Yes if you are reapplying a water-based coating and no if you're reapplying an oil-based coating.

Is it harmful to the vegetation growing around the deck, including the grass?

I need to remove an acrylic stain on my deck. The deck is surrounded by plants and grass. Will the vegatation be harmed by this product?
Asked by: kendit
I have not an issue with my grass or plants dying from this product, be sure to rinse well and rinse your ground area as well. From my experience this worked.

What is the best way to apply? Pouring directly from the container it comes in doesn’t allow for spot stripping.

Asked by: LJ
roll it on with a roller and long handle

I used Behr paint in my house almost 3 years ago and based on that I picked that paint stripper and honestly I am very disappointed I used it on my teak exterior furniture and following the instructions not even with following the label procedure product meet my expectations maybe I’m rating it on my purchase of behr exterior painting experience!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Time saver I started out trying to sand off all my old stain and sealer on the deck. I came across this product which was recommended by my Home Depot paint department guy. This saved me a lot of back breaking time to use. Applications was good and rinse off was a breeze. I’d recommend this to others that have to remove and repaint there deck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The secret is how wet and how long! I too was skeptical after reading reviews about this product and because previous experience with similar products has confirmed that these things just don't work as expected. However, I was more than delighted at the results after I worked with the Stripper for a short time. I realized that the secret was wetting the deck, applying the stripper, waiting for it to turn "white" and then rewetting, not misting, wetting! It seems to work its best when allowed to sit with a very wet surface. And also by applying with a roller which spread it evenly and not too thin, not too thick. Also saved time! Yes there were a few small areas that needed a second treatment, but it literally power washed off. My results were very satisfying, I was removing two applications of deck stain, that were applied over a ten year period on a 30 year old deck. It actually did what it said it would do and I would certainly recommend it to others.
