Questions & Answers

This product (#64) is a "stripper". does that mean that I will essrntially be stripping off the old paint?

Asked by: James
It will not remove paint very well. From other reviews, it appears to remove stains. As I suspected, my deck was painted, not stained. I went through a few gallons and hours of frustration to confirm this. As in other forums, finding the proper stripper can be trial and error, unless you know yourself what coating type was used before (I did not). I will be going with a belt sander rather than spend hours and a few hundred dollars finding the "right" stripper.

Must product/stripper be neutarlized before re-sealing?

Asked by: Miffer
Products active ingredient is Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye and caustic soda, it's an oxidizer. It a alkaline product which can be neutralized with acids like Boric, Oxalic acid bought at paint stores and typically called "wood brighteners or wood cleaners", vinegar also works full strength. All of the acid washes will need to be THOROUGHLY rinsed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide Now you know a bit more about the chemical you're working with, let's get back to the question; Should you neutralize the product after a THOROUGH rinsing as directed on the label? Yes if you are reapplying a water-based coating and no if you're reapplying an oil-based coating.

Will this strip your Behr solid stain from my deck?

Will this strip your Behr solid stain from my deck?
Asked by: newatdiy1
Hi newatdiy1, thanks for writing in with your question. Yes, our Wood Stain and Finish Stripper, (No. 64) will remove the solid stain. Apply liberally using a brush or roller and keep the surface wet by misting with water and reapplying No. 64. Most finishes will start to deteriorate after 5-45 minutes. Use a stiff bristle broom and rinse thoroughly. Repeat the application as needed, or spot sand the leftover stain. Please reach out to us directly if you have any other questions or concerns. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Customer Reviews

1 gal. Wood Stain and Finish Stripper is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 468.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Work I bought two gallons this product today in an effort to strip the paint off of my deck so that I could apply a new stain onto it. We have a relatively small deck, its 10x10. Seeing that the paint on my deck was only tearing off slightly, I applied both gallons of this stripper across the deck. After twenty minutes, I went to check on the deck and to my disappointment, there did not seem to be any reaction. I stumbled onto many negative reviews as I was searching for where I could have messed up. However, I did not want to think my time and efforts were in vain, and continued to monitor the deck for the next hour. Nothing. This product should not be the recommended brand by Home Depot. I even went as far as to try scraping some paint off with a metal paint scraper, but to no avail. I'm not sure if I should try to return these two gallons, but this was a waste of money, 2 hours, and potentially my right lung from inhaling these fumes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product works well My experience with the wood stain and finish stripper was great. I'm not sure why others in the 1 star review had such a bad experience. Following the instructions I applied the stripper to a portion of the deck and let it stay for 45 minutes. As needed I misted the deck with water to keep it from drying out. Then, using a deck scrubbing brush I removed the stripper. Being totally honest, it was HARD work! I would mist with water as needed to continue the process. After this was done I rinsed the area thoroughly with the hose sprayer. I then repeated the process on the deck until it was all done. At that time in addition to rinsing with the hose sprayer I used a pressure washer being very careful to use a light setting and holding the want 18-24 inches above the surface to avoid damaging the wood. After this was done I applied the Behr #63 Wood cleaner and followed the instructions well. Finally I applied Behr Semi-transparent Cedar tone wood stain. The results speak for themselves. I am very pleased with how it all turned out. I recommend the use of these Behr products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Turned out working great I was very hesitant trying the Behr stripper on my deck after reading many of the bad reviews. In fact I started to paint stripping job with another product that I had to spray on. After quickly running out of the brand X stripper because I had to use way more stripper than I planned, I wanted to keep moving with my work so I begrudgingly bought the Behr stripper at my local Home Depot. Well to my total surprise and shock, it worked great. I was way better than the more expensive spray on stripper. I have no idea how long the previous paint was on the deck or what was on the deck since the previous owner put it on, but the Behr stripper worked fine. When using it, plan on letting the product sit on the deck for a half hour to 45 minutes, and use the hard bristle brush to help it out. Power was the residue off and repeat. Honestly, the boards turned out looking almost like new. I would definitely use this product again, especially after the other highly rated and way more expensive product I originally used did not work nearly as well. Last year I sanded my entire deck and steps down. It took two days. This year I stripped and cleaned it and it only took 4 hours! I needed to remove transparent Sikkens deck stain because about 1/3 of it had worn off in heavy traffic areas (it had only been on for 1 year). I followed the directions to a T and the stain literally brushed right off after waiting the 45 minutes and keeping the surface wet. I used a deck brush (like a stiff bristled mini broom - it was perfect). Then when I used my garden hose to wash it off, it all came off easily, even some spots between the rails were by broom was too big to fit. I followed this up with Behr deck cleaner and again, brushed up more yuck with the brush before using the garden hose to wash it off. Again, it all rinsed off easily. No toxic smells! I am very impressed. Now I need to see if my Behr semi-transparent stain will adhere to the wood and last longer than the transparent Sikkens I’ve been using and re-applying yearly for the past 6 years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT PURCHASE !!!! I would not even give this product a 1 star! We got this product from Home Depot and the gentleman in the paint department who said he had worked for 25 yrs recommended this product after showing him a picture of our front steps. I followed the directions and I put a very thick coat on did not let dry out . I did it before the sun came around to front of home as well. I was furious it did not even touch it the deck broom recommended did nothing .. I was so mad ended up using the pressure on high and of course some came off .. I used pressure washers on side step that had not been treated with product and took same amount of paint off.. was a waist of time, money and my day!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn’t work I had already power washed the deck and used Pittsburg Wood Stripper but still had a lot of stain on the deck. Behr was recommended by a friend. I optimistically purchased it. Followed the instructions and hardly anything came up. Very disappointed. Not sure what to do next. Frustrated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t even... Two gallons of this and six hours of scrubbing/water blasting and it’s a mess. Don’t waste your time and money. So disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money! I purchased this product to strip existing paint off of my deck stairs and screened porch. I followed the instructions on the bottle exactly. I applied a thick coat, misted it repeatedly and used a stiff brush. The paint was in decent condition before this process, so I knew that it would probably take a couple of coats. After the first try and nothing came off with stuff brush, I applied a second. Still, nothing came off. Eventually, I just pressure washed everything off. What I thought was going to be a couple of hour project turned into a full day and into the night. It was such a waste of time and energy, I would have been better off just sanding.
