I have multiple small, hairline and a few medium sized (~half inch max) cracks in my stucco foundation. I've caulked all the visible cracks with Sika ProSelect Construction adhesive caulk (was recommended by H. Depot) and it's had ample time to dry & cure. Do I need to prime the stucco and caulked area before I apply the Behr Elastomeric paint? If so, how many coats of primer is needed? The stucco does have a tint color to it (which I'm assuming, but don't know for sure, is just from the stucco application). Behind the stucco is concrete block wall.
Asked by: Frank
Priming is for bare surfaces...If you have paint on stucco, it does not need to be primed.

I want to paint my stucco house that was originally painted 6 years ago when new. I want to use elastomeric paint tinted to a light bage color matching the original. I'm un sure about the primer thing. Must I paint the entire stucco home with one coat of primer before I use the elastomeric paint? The cans directions do not tell you to use the primer but it says on the web site to use primer. It very confusing. The paint on my home now is in very good condition but faded . I live in central Florida wher its hot and humid in the summer.
Asked by: Confused
I the house was painted you don't need to use a primer. I would only patch prime if you have areas which peeled/scraped or where you see stucco not covered by paint. I personally don't recommend this paint on new houses. This is a great paint no doubt but it seems to limit breathability of the walls. The stucco should be able to breathe on the wall to allow moisture to come out. Unless you have a great ventilation system the paint may increase moisture level in your interiors.

If you have painted your stucco home with elastomeric paint can at a later date re coat it with normal exterior paint?
Asked by: Confused
The elastomeric paint starches much more than acrilyc paint. I assume that it would make the acrilyc crack with time, similar to painting oil over acrilyc. For that reason I wouldn’t pay over it. Although, I never tested it that way.

Is this paint heat resistant and appropriate to use on wood burning fireplace brick surround excluding the firebox?

Asked by: MrBud
I am not an expert but, I do not think this paint is made for a working fireplace. It’s very elastic I believe it would Bubble up with the heat from the firebox. Pat

Customer Reviews

5 gal. Elastomeric Masonry, Stucco and Brick Exterior Paint is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 439.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Behr elastomeric paint is great stuff. i bought this paint but i read most of the reviews before and i have to say, i had mixed feelings about the paint. i also wanted to spray it with my Graco magnum prox 17 but the pain label says to use a paint tip between 21 to 25 i believe. well i bought two 5gals buckets to paint the exterior stucco of a rental house we have in banning ca. the label also said to paint between the the temps of 50 to 90 and it was a cold day in banning at about 52 as its high and went on thick and smooth as it should. this is a 78 yr old house and its stucco was at the point of having to redo it but we decided to try this paint and we are happy. i sprayed it with my graco prox17 spray gun and as you may know this gun can only go to a 17 max tip and it did a 1100 sqft house at max pressure. i caked it on where there was cracks in the stucco and it really did seal those well. i put a 517 tip on my gun and it did leave light signs of fingers but i just went over them on the second pass. i also bought a darker color to paint the chimney.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best elastromeric paint ever Purchased 16 pails of 5 gallons. In September of 2018 .Applied two heavy coats of this elastromeric paint on my 4000 sq ft exterior home. My home has been the talk of the neighborhood every body says how great it looks and all ask us what product did we use and we say BEHR paint the only paint every body should use. They are astonished on how great it looks. I have always purchased BEHR paint only and have painted all our homes with BEHR top notch product no matter the price it's not about how expensive its about doing it once with the very best. I have purchased exterior, interior and epoxy paint for concrete floors mostly in garages and other slabs of cement. Any time I here some one either in my family, neighborhood or see people in the big box stores looking for paint I tell them of this amazing product. Thank you BEHR for all the years you have supplied this product to myself and many others. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wrong ideas about this product I am a professional painter who has won 12 Angie's List Super Service Awards in Central Florida for "Exterior Painting" . My experience goes back to 1985, but established my own company here in Orlando in 1998. -There is a lot of talk about elastomeric paint and even pro painters are spreading rumors that are not true ! 1.) If you have a house made of block or stucco and you have crack/settling problems - this is the product to use. It will hide small cracks and because it stays flexible you will not get hair cracks again . 2.) The application is to be done by roller and you should use a tinted primer in preparation for using this product. 3.) You should hire a professional who has experience with this application . You can do it yourself- but chances you are doing wrong are high. 4.)You should not use thios product on siding or garage doors (metal or wood). Get regular Behr exterior paint for that purpose -or you might create another problem. 5.) It is NOT sealing in moisture in walls -it lets moisture out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saved me allot of money! Our house is 19 years old, 3/4 of it Stucco. Never had Stucco before, thought it was maintance free. Wrong! When people around us started selling their houses, the "professional inspectors" would say the stucco needed to be replaced for 100k. After lots of investigation, and engineering firm, these guys are nuts. My neighbor paid 8k to have Sherwin Williams vesion rolled into his house. Looks great. I sucked it up and bought the Grayco Sprayer, HP9 I think it is off the top of my head, so I could spray this on. My house is 4500 sq. Feet. Most people said the sprayer would not handle the elastomeric. It did, no problem. Talked to Grayco, they said I would probably go through more tips than ususal. 20 gallons later, tip is great. We tinted the paint to match the new color theme of the house. I can spray it on incredibly fast, use either or a brush or a roller to back roll or work it into the stucco. This stuff is much easier than I thought it would be to work with. Cost is great as it makes he you can get it on sale when they have Behr paint on sale. I did get the sprayer for a separate project, but I made sure that I could use it for this. This stuff works as good as it says, that doesnt happen to ofter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elastomeric paint for masonry Elastomeric paint for masonry fills small hairline cracks and is an excellent coating. Clean the surface thoroughly and make sure the surface is dry before applying. I used Behr Masonry bonding primer as prep the day before. If the surface is smooth and not flaky one or two coats will be perfect. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

It sealed up the house real nice. Getting ready to paint my dad's house with the same paint in the next few weeks when the weather improves. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Has held up like new for the year I've have it up and seems to work great to cover/prevent hair/-line cracks. I did use 3 coats but I would say that two coats is all that is needed. Use a thick 1/1/4 best quality roller and brush.
