Questions & Answers

Is this a redwood stain. Like the color redwood or is it a stain for redwood

Asked by: Handyman
This is a redwood color. I applied it over pressure-treated pine and it looks great.

Should I use this on previously sealed/painted wood?

We have a screened porch with wooden frames and floor that we want to protect and repaint. I have no idea what the previous owner did, whether he used a stain/sealer like this or just paint, but the floor and one wall seem to have this type of redwood color. Is this the right product for us? Why does it say "redwood" and "transparent" at the same time--which is it?
Asked by: Markdf
Yes we re stained our podoza that had been done about 8 years ago.

Can this be applied to pressure treated wood? We recently installed the weather guard red wood tone decking. Do we need to apply anything else before

Asked by: Matt
Hello Matt, Thanks for your question. This product can be applied to pressure treated wood as soon as the wood is dry. The surface would need to be bare wood. A previous coating would need to be stripped with Behr No. 64 Stripper followed by cleaning the bare wood surface with our No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Best wishes for your project!

Staining my Deck - some questions-URGENT PLZ.!

I live in Atlanta, GA.. My deck is new (replaced all footboards 6 months ago), except for railings which is 20 yrs. old but looks good. I had a dark stain on railings. Stripped it pretty well with Behr stripper. Got stripper off with low pressure, pr.washer. But still the pressure washer ripped the wood in places (fibres exposed, looks hairy at places). New wood NOT treated yet. Lightly pressure washed new wood just to get little bit of dirt off. Planning on using Behr Premium cleaner today to brighten both new wood (footboards) and Old wood (railings). Today's high about 60. Not planning to brush (to cumbersome#, but hose it off with a less powerful pr.washer ensuring that wood does not rip. Mildly sand it Sat to get glaze off on new wood and remove the exposed fibres on old wood. And stain it with behr Redwood Transparent stain Sun #Temp 68). Temp will stay at 68 Mon & Tue, will be in low 50's/upper 40's Wed onwards. I want the beauty of the wood to show with grains. My questions: a) Is my overall approach ok? b) Sanding 24 hrs. after using cleaner ok? c) Do I need to even mildly sand the new wood at all or is it unnecessary? d) How much should I dilute stain to ensure that grains are seen, wood beauty is preserved, and wood is not covered like paint? e) Planning on doing just 1 coat given that it may not dry easily. Was planning on doing 2nd coat in Spring. OK or should I do 2 coats now? Please advise......Thx!
Asked by: Murli
A) yes good approach B) sanding day after for a smoother finish after cleaning C) sanding new wood, depends on new wood and rest of deck. Having new pieces match is important to some D) I would not dilute but mix a test sample with Flood (Home Depot paint section) E) two coats now would be best to limit contamination of 2nd coat later When in doubt do a test sample,

Although it states "transparent" it is not , but the color is great and shows the grain, glad I didn't go with the "semi transparent". Good coverage, but follow the instructions to have even coverage. Help from the actual Behr rep at the St. Petersburg store, regarding colors, type of brush and rollers to use, was a big plus. Thanks

Deck stains are never perfect - but I used this based on CR testing and am a bit disappointed. The redwood color is more like old pepto- bismol and it seems to look & feel rather plastic. Used it on my new redwood slat fence. Did some sanding but didn't see the need to clean since it was newly installed one month prior. Application looked same on sanded & non-sanded areas. Also took a few weeks to dry without tackiness. ... we'll see how it goes. Wish they would offer a clear product that you can add small amounts of toner to get a more reasonable color ... not the full pigmented stain which is frankly always ugly from most manufacturers....!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEHR Redwood transpsrent waterproof wood finish Very pleased with the finish in one coat it protected the wood from the elements. Water forms dropplets and just runs right off of it. You can see the difference. On one side i had done two coats if you want a deeper red color do more than one coat. With both you could still see the grain in the wood. So if you're looking for that affect color and grain. This is a good pick, the only thing to consider is not to over lap your application. It will appear darker on edges if you have done so and to complete each board you have started before taking a break. I found it helpful to use a sponge type brush for little cracks along with a roller. I plan on using this product on other projects it outlasts others.

Water beads nicely (at least while the coat is relatively fresh - we'll have to give it time to see how well it wears and holds up to exposure). The traditional "redwood" color, meanwhile, is quite attractive (more so than the "bargain brands" orange hues). However, the stuff is pricey - almost double what other brands are going for. We'll have to see if it's worth it, once the stuff has had time to prove itself.

Even after two coats, it shows the grain nicely. We've replaced our top plates (handrails) on our 20-year-old deck but left the spindles and railing frames all around. Staining both with this product has given us a beautiful two-tone look to our railing system, the old a shade darker than the new tops. Doing the same to our 14-foot picnic table (new 2x8 top) really sets off the deck with this two-tone theme. Very happy.

The color, ease of application and cleanup was as stated. I applied the product to the wood in my garage prior to construction. Hot summers and snow in winter has tested the performance. On horizontal surfaces it did not last 3-4 years, but lasted 1-2 years. However the color brought out the true beauty of the wood so it is in my opinion worth the maintenance.

Currently bought it again to recoat my fence, which has not been recoated in almost 5 years. You will see in the attached picture what my fence currently looks like and I haven't recoated it yet. This is a quality product which you will not regret using. It protects very well, and in Florida weather, to boot. Also, if you watch the sales you can receive a $10 rebate for each 1 gallon can you buy !

Home owners association said it needed to be finished. Since the material was cedar toned already this worked perfectly. Looks sharp and hopefully will keep the railing's appearance looking good for many years. I also use it on a very old dirty outdoor rocking chair. I sanded the chair down and put this finish on it an it looks really nice.
