Questions & Answers

How long does the coating last before it starts to crack and peel?

All of the reviews I read said this product is a waste of money and that in less than a year the coating started to crack and/or peel off.
Asked by: Lovelila
It looked fine after the first year. After year two I had to do minor touch-ups. Now, after year three, I'm doing major touch-ups, including sanding and scraping. I suspect after another year the deck will require a complete re-surfacing.

Would anyone recommend this product on a new deck?

Asked by: jmdad75
NO! This stuff is trash. Only took 6 months for it to start peeling. Now I have to sand the whole deck just to fix it. If you bought this junk DON’T USE IT, RETURN IT OR THROW IT IN THE DUMP.

How long does it take to dry before second

Asked by: LA
It will look dry within about 30 minutes but depending on the temperature, allow at least 2 hours in between coats. Also, if your deck gets a lot of traffic/ direct sunlight/ heavy snow give your deck at LEAST two heavy coats or you’ll end up restaining the next spring.

1 gal. #SC-131 Pewter Solid Color Exterior Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2408.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money and many hours of work. I definitely do NOT recommend this product. We bought 12 gallons less than 2 years ago. We power washed our very large deck and meticulously followed the directions. We spent about a week painting and applying multiple coats. Last summer, we started seeing some of the deck over paint peeling off in spots. This month, only 22 months after applying the product, it's peeling away in large strips allover the deck. I thought this would last at least 5-7 years. It didn't even come close to lasting 2 years. Extremely disappointed. I associate the Behr name with a high-quality product, but that certainly did not bear out this time. We have a friend who applied this product the year before we did on his deck, and he was telling us last year it was a disastrous result for him as well. Now, we're experiencing it first hand. I painted houses before, have stained a deck before on another house we owned, and painted houses for my dad's painting business growing up, so I'm not a "first-time rookie" painter. DO NOT BUY!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, but be careful! I used Deckover on my lakeside dock this summer. Deckover did a great job covering the bare dock wood. I applied 2 coats as indicated, and it has held up nicely. I would recommend it for decks and docks: it will make yours look as good as new! But here's the caveat: I bought the 5-gal can, and couldn't lift it to the end of the dock, where I had to start in order not to be trapped. So I set the can at the beginning of the dock, dipped my roller in, and ran to the end of the dock to start my project. Naturally, as I went some paint dripped onto the dock, but I wasn't worried: I would smooth over the drips as I walked back. Well, folks, that was a bad idea: THIS STUFF SETS IMMEDIATELY!!! By the time I tried rolling over the drips, they were too hard to blend in. Result: Parts of my dock are full of ugly drips. So a word to the wise: be careful using this product, and be smarter than I was. Don't allow for drips! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product Applied to a deck that was 2 yrs old..never stained. Cleaned and painted following all directions in good weather as directed. Within 8 months product was peeling. Called Home Depot and they just gave me the Deck Over 800# in Ca. The young man essentially told me it had been done wrong! The only way to remove it is by sanding. They offer to pay for a sander and send me more of the Deck Over. No labor reimbursement. Why would l even consider using the same terrible product? It was applied to my deck and railings in 2014. I do not have the $$ to have it done again. So since 2015 my deck and railingslook terrible and the railing will need replaced. Home Depot would not stand behind the sales and the Behr Co thinks you are stupid. I do not go to Home Depot nor would l use or ever recommend a Behr product. My mistake was not checking reviews prior to using. Terrible product and terrible customer service from Home Depot and Behr

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Revitalizes Weathered Deck In the before pictures, you can see that the weather had really deteriorated our decking. The original deck paint could not hold up to the sun and the weather, and the wood had split in many locations. Prior to application, we scrubbed the decking with an all purpose cleaner, and pressure washed to remove the cleaner and loose paint. The application of the Behr Deck Over was fairly straight forward when applied per the instructions. I do not recommend applying in the direct sunlight on a warm afternoon. The first coat tended to dry faster than we could apply the material. the second coat was applied early in the morning before the sun hit the deck. It went on much smoother than the first coat. The pictures show the deck following the second coat. We will be applying a third coat, since we have enough left over. My only "Con" is that the paint shows the footprints and traffic dirt in a relatively short period of time. After a light mopping, the dirt and footprints came right off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good! We bought a home in July (5 months ago) we repainted the house and when it came to the front deck (small) we went to Home Depot and they had this deck over stuff, we really liked the looks of it, along with the texture so we went with it, we prepped the deck exactly by the directions on the can, it's been a whopping 5 months and this stuff is already peeling off! I should have read the reviews BEFORE purchasing, I now see we are not the only ones with this problem! It's truly a shame, the stuff looks amazing and the texture is perfect for a deck, we have had MANY MANY compliments on it. If this stuff was durable and held up good it would be a 10 star product, but since it DOES NOT it is totally worthless, who wants to go through all the work it takes to properly prep everything only to watch it peel away in less than 6 months! We worked really hard to make everything perfect, I make a vow to work just as hard to get the word out on this stuff! BUYER BEWARE!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good I have 2 wood decks, one s 22x22, and the other 12x12 end deck for an above ground oval pool. We had Cabots Earthen Clay color and wanted to change it. I powerwashed both decks, scraped and sanded both by hand, then the large one was sanded with a belt sander, grits of 20, 36, and 80 and had to be used in that order. Started the large deck first, First coat (the Redwood Naturaltone-#122) put on by hand brush starting at 5AM, took 4 hours, then let dry a few hours and for the sun to move past the house, then rolled on 2nd coat. It looks great so far and has some grit in the stain which acts as a slip resistant. Took a little over 5 gallons for large deck (including stairs/platforms and 30 spindles)-And about 3 gallons for pool deck with 5 stairs and 80 spindles). I did find some spots on the pool deck that bubbled a few days after application, but it was probably not dried enough before putting the stain down. Again, so far, so good, but will write again after a Long Island winter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product didn't even last one year! I have to say I was quite disappointed with this product we purchased last summer. We have an extremely large wood deck and it seems every year we have to re-stain it. When my fiance and I saw the commercial for this product we were both very excited as it said it would stand up to all weather. We went to Home Depot and purchased a couple of cans of Behr Premium Deck Over as well as a sander and re-sanded the entire deck before applying Deck Over. The end result last summer was really nice as it turned out really good. This year we anticipated the snow melting so we could see if it stood up to its commercial. You can imagine how devastated we were to see that it had peeled off in alot of places after all of that hard work we did. I decided to write this review and I will be writing Behr with photos from last summer and this summer - big difference. Not happy with this product at all! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Behr DeckOver needs a DoOver I've used Behr paint many times in the past and have always been pleased with their products. This particular product is the exception. The employee working the HomeDepot paint section sold me on this product with the supposed benefit of it being that it is durable & long-lasting. I only wish that I had taken the time to first read the reviews of this product prior to purchasing it. My experience echoes many of the reviews describing this product. It is neither durable nor long-lasting. I prepped my deck by renting an orbital floor sander to get the wood surface nice & smooth. The DeckOver product isn't easy to apply as it's of a thicker consistency, but with the promise of not having to restain for years I figured it was well worth the effort. What I was surprised and disappointed to find was the product beginning to bubble, chip, and peel off w/in the first year. Horrible performance for a Behr product and would strongly suggest looking elsewhere for a long-lasting deck stain/finish.
