Project got sidelined for a month so 5 gal paint sat outside undisturbed. Now paint seems very thin and develops a blue oily film within a few minutes. Is this normal.
Asked by: Marg
Hello Marg, thank you for your question. Our Exterior Premium Plus Ultra Paint has a shelf-life of 2 years, unopened. We recommend ensuring a max storage temperature of no more than 120 F (49C). We'd recommend stirring your paint for 3-5 minutes before applying it. If the paint seems too thin or if there is an odor to it, we would not recommend using it. And instead, would suggest replacing the paint. Hope this info helps. Good luck with your project, and happy painting! -Joanna

Customer Reviews

1-gal. #P250-3 Marsh Marigold Flat Exterior Paint is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 854.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Awesome! My wife and I inherited my parents home and the first project we undertook was repainting the exterior of the house. Last painted in the early 90's we wanted to not only prepare the surface properly, we wanted the best paint. We found that in Behr premium plus. The color selection, ease of application and application temperature window made this paint superior to any other we looked at. We chose the color Spanish Galleon and since finishing the house, we constantly, (really, it's true) have people stop by and comment on our house color and ask us what we used and how we did it. Thanks Behr for an exceptional product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Paint We have painted the outside of our house four times over the years, and each time it took approximately 21 gallons to complete the job. We have very little shade, and the house would start fading within two years. We always used a quality paint. This time we chose the Behr Ultra Premium, and could not have been more pleased. Application on texture 1-11 was very easy, usually it is tedious with the pourious nature of that siding. Two coats on the entire house, and we only ended up using a total of 11 gallons. The color was great, the savings was phenominal! We are extremly pleased, and have to paint our rental house this spring...plan on using Behr Ultra plus again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not self level well Pros: Overall good encapsulation with 2 full coats. Cons: 1. Does not self level well, thick formula, thicker than other "quality paints". If you don't feather brush out immediately all surfaces, it sets too fast and shows all brush marks. I am a professional painter; I minimize direct sunlight for this reason. This was the biggest disappointment in the performance of this product. 2. Formula is very thick compared to other high quality paints, Behr said up to 8 oz of water can be added per gallon, I had to add 3 oz, to thin the paint down. 3. Constant stirring is recommended with this formula, for some, this can be a real nuisance. 4. Brushes get very "gummy" and need to be washed out using this product after about 4 hrs. Product gets very thick at bottom of 5 gallon bucket needs to add water to save product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product - Covers Great / Drys Fast Applied this product to an already painted brick porch - about 3 gallons in total. One coat did it! Covered like magic. It dries fast. One "strong" suggestion is to first test the paint color using the small samples they sell for about $3, because the color charts are very inaccurate as viewed in the store. At the very least take the color chart to the location - FIRST - because you will find that under bright sun light the colors are much lighter than in the store (or indoor). This is a more costly product than the non-primer version -- but worth every penny (in time and effort). -- just remember to test the colors and you will be set!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exterior re-paint with Ultra flat We are using Behr Ultra Premium Flat on the complete exterior of our very old house. The siding has been mostly stripped down to bare wood as it had several coats of paint that had blistered. We are very impressed with the coverage that this paint has provided having to only use 2 coats to achieve a high quality finish. Glad we went with the flat as there are many imperfections on the old wood siding and the flat helps hide imperfections. I would recommend this paint to anyone that has an older character home and wants to keep that heritage quality look.

I normally don't review products and I mention it to add further weight to how happy I am with this purchase. The paint fully covered texturized drywall in one coat and I added a second just to be safe. I was also able to spot touchup in the room with no issues. I received excellent customer service from the paint department in the Wausau, WI store location and HD's paint matching was dead on as the touch up work blended in perfectly. The staff was very helpful in making sure I got the right paint for the job with the right finish along with the right tools. Very happy with this experience from start to finish.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quick and easy way to save a step... but at a cost Been working to repaint a 1880's victorian. So far we have painted two colors: A semi-gloss on some wood shingles and a tinted white on the wood trim. The semi-gloss on the shingles had excellent coverage and did not require a recoat. The white on the trim used significantly more paint and when it dried the paint had a crazed finish. This required us to rescrape and apply a second coat. The semi-gloss was applied with a brush while the white was applied with a roller and brush. Underlying finish was mostly bare, aged wood which was scraped to remove the existing loose paint. Although the paint saves the step of having to prime, the cost is twice that of regular paint and it still requires a recoat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Stuff My wife and I painted our house 22 years ago. Originally the house was a brick red and we painted it a slate blue. After all this time we are now going to go with a yellow color. This time we hired a professional painter that normally uses California paints or Sherman Williams but when I told him I wanted to use Behr and gave him the reason why (22yrs.) he was himself amazed at how good the house currently looks and how It has held up considering we live in New Hampshire . We don't really need to paint it's just my wife wants a different color.
