water based enamel = a bit of clean water mixed in works well for brushing, but I spray it as-is from the can

Coats

How many coats do I need to do? I’m going a darker grey over a purple/pink. Can I get away with one?
Asked by: Painting
Buy a better grade of paint and one coat is plenty.

I need to paint a wall white that's already been pre painted dark brown do i need a first coat of primer?

The wall has designs colored in dark brown. I know this product has primer in in but i need to know if it's recommended to use a bucket of primer by it self first or can i achieve same result by using this product by it self?
Asked by: Elgin
Yes, of course. Even though the good quality Behr paints are "self-priming", (the Premium, the Ultra, and the Marquee), you should use a primer first because plain white has very little hiding ability. (I am a Painting Contractor). If your color of choice was like 'antique white' or beige, then it probably would cover with no primer, but you should do a test first in a little 1-foot wide spot. Primer is cheaper than the paint, and dries quicker, and it evens out the uneven surfaces like the artwork you described. That's why you use primer separate from topcoat paint, even though the paint is called "self-priming". That just means it sticks easily.

I decided to try the Marwquee line of paint since it promised one coat coverage. I am totally disappointing in this paint and won't use it again. One gallon only covered only 1/2 a 10 by 11 size room and it left spots that had to be painted over a second coat. It dries too fast when you are applying it. It's partially dries when you are putting more paint on your roller. When you roll your new paint on the wall, it peels off the first column of paint that you just applied a minute earlier. It is literally seconds and it is too dry to blend your rows while painting a wall. It sticks to itself and doesn't make a good bond with the wall. There was a small drop of extra paint on the wall and I attempted to remove it. It pulled a 3 inch large circle of paint off the wall. I had to cut it off and try and paint over it which made a terrible finish. I had to second and third coat the entire room. Waste of money, and a waste of time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is the last time I will use a Behr... This is the last time I will use a Behr product. I just moved in to a fairly large apartment. I'm on a budget and the cost of a premium name paint seemed too much for all the coverage needed. I cleaned all the surfaces (ceiling, walls and woodwork) prior to painting. I bought the best rollers and brushes, and I've painted for years. I thoroughly stirred all the paints I used. I was painting over white paint that was 5 years old. The ceilings took 2 coats in each of the 7 rooms because it looked splotchy. The yellow took 3 coats the other colors all took at least 2 coats, sometimes 3. The first coat is like watered down milk paint. The last ingredient on Behr's list has to be pigment! The paint also has a weird consistency where it tends to form a separate skin over the previous wall and not rip into the wall. The time wasted plus all the extra gallon of paint show me how economical Sherwin Williams an Benjamin Moore really are in the long run. Home depot is convenient- that's about it.

I usually purchase the Ultra and decided to try the Marquee. I brought the paint home, stirred it and began cutting in around trim and doors. I stirred it and poured it into paint tray and used the roller the associate at Home Depot had told me I should use. I rolled the paint on the two walls and by the time I finished the second wall I noticed the paint was running. I’ve never had this problem from paint. I used my brush and roller trying to smooth out the runs and sags. After it had dried, it looked awful!! Anywhere I had brushed on the paint was a completely different shade than what was rolled on. The brush was new as well as the roller. The walls were clean and no residue of any kind. The paint had been stirred often. I took the paint back and the same associate said the paint seemed thin and refunded my money. She then mixed up a can of the Ultra in same shade. The only other time I used the Marquee it did the exact same thing. I do NOT recommend this line of Behr paint. The associate told me she would have the Behr rep look at the paint himself. She was nice and very helpful. However, I will never buy the Marquee again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We recently painted our home with over 14 gallons of Behr Marquee paint in Semi-Gloss and Satin. ... We recently painted our home with over 14 gallons of Behr Marquee paint in Semi-Gloss and Satin. I really liked the consistency of the paint and the smooth way in which it laid down. It dried quickly - but not too quickly - and survived our friends helping us move in after only 2 days of drying with hardly any touch up needed. If you've scuffed up against new paint you'll understand how great it was to have the paint be so durable so quickly. The negatives - it does drip. This is a heavier paint which probably helps it coat well but it can begin to drag down your wall after 10 minutes or so. We found it helped to review each section after 10 minutes to catch any drips that had formed. The other negative, which didn't really surprise me, was that it was NOT 1 coat. Even the packaging says you will need more than one coat for durability, but beware it will not cover completely with one coat. As a result, we had to spend over $200 more in additional gallons of paint. It did a great job of covering the previous home owners very bright color palette but required 2 coats throughout and an occasional touch up with a third coat. Nevertheless, I would recommend this paint as a great choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have before used this as a tinted trim paint and... Have before used this as a tinted trim paint and its excellent. It dries fast in desert heat of Arizona so its a challenge to keep a wet edge. Used the tinted colors before, this time though customer wanted ultra pure white so spray took 2 very heavy coats to cover and in brushwork took 3 coats white over a light tan on a heavy stucco. Issue was took 30% more than my budget, desk wanted to know how much white tint was added, said they can add 10 oz of tint, but since I started with no tint, had to end without it. Desk should have told me that at order time, not half way through, thats why it took me 30% more @ about $300 extra expense. Finish is solid and durable but Matte flat ext. sprayed looked like a strong eggshell or almost a satin. A tough one when customer requires a flat. I think they should be honest and call it eggshell and say flats not remotely possible. 36 yr painting contractor and my main paint is int. Behr Ultra.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage I was painting a 24 ft x 16 ft room that was painted red. I chose a Mushroom color and I was sure I that I would have to prime and do 2 coats of paint. I did some research on the Marquee brand and went to speak with the Home Depot paint person. He guaranteed that one coat of Marquee would do the job. If it did not they would give me another gallon free to finish the job. As I was applying the paint I was amazed that it did look like it was working as promised. The next morning I went around the room with a bright work light and it did cover in ONE coat using the entire gallon on this job. I am impressed? Once I got going I made sure to cover the roller good each time I dipped. Roll on as explained any good instructions tell you but don't over roll. Lighten the pressure as the paint covers and roll it out to get a great finish. I did this whole room with one gallon at about $42, a great deal. Getting ready to do a couple more rooms and this will be my paint to use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst exterior paint In August 2009 I purchased two 5-gal. BEHR Premium Plus Ultra Pure White Flat Exterior Paint to paint the outside of my home (siding and trim), and two 5-gal. BEHR Premium Ultra Pure White Eggshell Enamel Interior Paint for the inside of my home. I have always purchased and have been pleased with the BEHR products. The interior paint was applied consistent with the manufacturer recommends, resulting in easy application and good coverage. For the exterior siding and trim, I prepared the surfaces using the BEHR mfg. recommendations. The paint applied easily and had good coverage for the siding and trim. After one year and an entire 2010 Texas summer, the paint on my trim began to peel off. By the end of the 2nd year (2011) the pain was all peeled off where the direct sunlight hits the wood. I am very disappointed with the performance of the exterior paint product. Now in 2014 I now need to repaint all of my trim boards, and I am having 2nd doubts about purchasing a BEHR exterior paint product.

While this would give one coat coverage on a regular smooth wall, I had a lot of bleeds due to the texture, even after I changed nap depth, so I had a lot of touch up work. Also, I noticed that ease of application changed with humidity--but that just might be any paint. I got this because flat is the "trend" but I personally prefer eggshell or shinier. That said, the Marquee flat/matte has a better feel than the regular Ultra/Ultra plus for application, coverage, and protection. I painted the entire interior of another house about five years ago using only Ultra and others, so this is my second big project, but the first time I've tried Marquee. I really liked the Ultra, but I'm using one gallon of Marquee to two gallons of anything else, even with the (extensive) touch ups, so I'll stick with it for the rest of my project-but in eggshell.
