Q:Would these work to dull the sheen of a semi-gloss or does it destroy the paint/color?

Answer This Question
A:Â Hi Bailey. Thank you for your question. These Swipes are designed to degloss painted surfaces to help promote adhesion before repainting. Although they'll dull the glossy sheen, it may not provide an even, uniform finish to leave as-is. So I recommend testing it in a small area first to see if you like how the paint looks before using it across your project. Otherwise, I suggest working with your local store for a product that will dull the sheen without affecting the look of the paint. Have a nice day! -Joni

I got these swipes to be used on builder grade cabinets before painting them. The cabinets are 20 years old, but the finish is in relatively good condition. For the review I focused on the side of the cabinet which is actually in pretty good shape as you can see in the picture below (cabinet before swipe). I used the swipe to wipe the entire cabinet with a good amount of pressure for around 3 minutes, then I came back and did it for another 2 minutes because I was unsure of the original results.
You can see in the picture of the wipe, there was material coming off, but it was not apparent while wiping. If you look closely in the picture of the cabinet after swipe, you may be able to see that it looks like the finish is almost cracking or splitting after I allowed the cabinet to dry for 10 minutes. Upon touching the cabinet it felt tacky and like paint would definitely stick to it. I had expected the deglossing to remove the sheen and that did not happen, but I believe it will still hold paint better than had I not used the wipes. Time will tell!
The wipes are white and feel damp, but not soaking. I had no issue with feeling like they dried out to quickly and it did the entire side of the cabinet no problem. The wipe became dirty as it was used, but this didn't seem to make it work less. I only used one wipe to test (I still need to decide on a final paint color), but if I was using more I would wear gloves as it was drying to the skin.
4 stars, works well enough, but did not really remove the gloss as it said. It did make the surface less smooth and glossy feeling and instead made the old finish tacky feeling. It was easier than sanding and I am hopeful the long term results will pan out.

Picked up these wipes to hopefully help with painting bathroom and kitchen cabinets. I am hoping to avoid needing to sand every surface by using these wipes. The wipes say you don't need gloves and for using them on my test cabinet I did not use gloves, but if I was doing my entire kitchen or even the entire bathroom vanity I would use gloves. The wipes have an odor of cleaner and are damp, but not excessively wet. This may be frustrating when I do the entire project, but I rubbed the side of the cabinet for around 5 minutes and the wipe never dried fully so it may be ok. When I used them I could see that it made the cabinet look wet and changed the way the sheen looked on the cabinet. After getting done I allowed it to dry for 10 minutes as it says and then looked at the results. The finish felt very tacky and in the after picture below you may be able to see it looked almost like the finish cracked. I expected the sheen to become dull or in some way show it was working, but it definitely did not look that way. I painted the cabinet and it appeared to hold well and I believe it will work, but will be waiting for a few weeks to see how it ages.
I gave it 4 stars because I had to rub fairly hard for around 5 minutes and the sheen/gloss didn't really go away. I could tell it was changing the surface, made the surface more tacky, and appears to have allowed the paint to stick well.

These Behr Swipes Interior Deglossing Pre-Paint Wipes are fabulous!. Iam just starting to paint and old dresser of mine that has been stained at least 40 years ago. The wipes take the stain right off, it will be easy to paint and no sanding. I"m also planning on painting my kitchen cupboards, so this will really help with the prep work. This is a no brainer, I would purchase these over and over again.

I was excited for these wipes because I was hoping they would make painting a little easier. Honestly, though, I'm not sure I could tell much difference.
To test these wipes for the review, I painted my folding closet doors. One side, I left un-treated while I treated the other side with these wipes.
You can see in the picture that I was able to get SOMETHING off based on the crud in the wipe, but the paint still seemed just as glossy.
If you're looking for something to help clean the surface prior to painting, these will certainly help with that, though I think Behr makes a separate product for cleaning.
The instructions on the bag do not require glove wearing, but I do highly recommend them. I attempted without gloves, and I noticed the tips of my fingers got very dried out after using this product without gloves.
As for painting, I really couldn't tell much difference between painting the "deglossed" side vs. the untouched side. In my opinion, if you're trying to degloss the old paint prior to painting, I would recommend a quick finishing sand with sandpaper, then wipe with a damp rag to get rid of the dust.

Just as advertised
I saw this product on Ask This Old House and decided to try it on our bathroom cabinet project. We're going from old brown stain to crisp white paint. I'm amazed. These really do replace sanding! The odor is low. And it was so quick. On all my past projects, I've always sanded and made a major mess. This method worked beautifully and took just minutes. No cleanup at all! Primer adhered to the fresh surface perfectly. Thank you! From the bottom of our hearts!
